...Money, happiness Can money buy happiness? Exploring this question is a chapter in ‘Dance with Chance: Making luck work for you’ by Spyros Makridakis, Robin Hogarth, and Anil Gaba (Landmark). Acknowledging that the question is something that has intrigued philosophers, poets, and pop stars over the years, the authors go on to narrate a study by two psychologists, Ed Diener and Martin Seligman. “They carried out a survey of various groups of people, ranging from the tycoons and heiresses on Forbes magazine’s billionaires list to Calcutta’s pavement dwellers. The respondents were asked to indicate their agreement with the statement, ‘You are satisfied with your life,’ using a scale from 1 (complete disagreement) to 7 (complete agreement), with 4 suggesting a neutral attitude.” If the answer is above 5.8, you are happier than a billionaire, the respondents were informed. What were the findings? No huge differences in happiness between the different groups, apart from the homeless respondents. The semi-nomadic Massai of Africa may be fractionally less content than the billionaires, but they score higher than a random selection of Swedish people; and the satisfaction rates of Indian slum dwellers are not much worse than an international sample of college students, one learns. Life satisfaction does not increase once people reach a certain minimum level of income, the authors note. They also cite another study that plotted per capita GDP on the x-axis, and life satisfaction on y-axis...

The 17-gram (0.59-ounce) wireless device has bluetooth capability and is equipped with a GPS, compass, gyro-sensor, battery, barometer, speaker and microphone. Wearable computing is thought by many commentators to be the next big thing in technology, with products such as Google Glass at the forefront. The device, known at the moment as the "Earclip-type Wearable PC" has a microchip and data storage, enabling users to load software, said engineer Kazuhiro Taniguchi of Hiroshima City University. Its designs are based on traditional "ikebana" flower arrangements. "We have made this with the basic idea that people will wear it in the same way they wear earrings," Taniguchi told AFP in a recent interview as he showcased a black prototype. The system, which developers are hoping to have ready for Christmas 2015, can be connected to an iPod or other gadget and would allow the user to navigate through software programmes using facial expressions, such as a raised eyebrow, a stuck-out tongue, a wiggle of the nose or...

...Sean Quinn famously built an international empire out of a hole on his father's small farm and a borrowed £100. Along the way, the notoriously media-shy tycoon carved out a reputation as a plain-living but fearless outsider who took on big monopolies and won. It was this anti-establishment attitude, seared into him as a boy growing up on the Irish border, that led him to invest heavily in the maverick Anglo Irish Bank, while he was still Ireland's richest man. The move proved to be a monumental mistake for the usually shrewd 63-year-old entrepreneur, that has already wiped out at least €1bn of his personal wealth, left him saddled with €2.8bn more in debts and, now, sees the Financial Regulator take control of his flagship company. Mr Quinn left school at the age of 14 to work on the family farm in Derrylin, Co Fermanagh. With a borrowed £100 he dug a hole on the 23-acre small-holding, started extracting gravel, washing it and selling it to local builders. Steeped in the traditions of the GAA, the young Mr Quinn used his contacts in Ireland's largest sporting organisation to develop his business across the border into the Republic. Soon dubbed the 'Mighty Quinn', he took on the huge Cement Roadstone Holdings (CRH), who had the market sewn up. His attentions later switched to insurance, glass, plastics and radiators. It was this simple formula of taking on fearsome monopolies by undercutting prices - the Ryanair model more than a decade before the airline...

...Ross Jenkins Groupon Scandal 2:30 Pavlo, Walter. "Groupon Accounting Scandal, and We're Surprised?" Forbes. Forbes Magazine, 03 Apr. 2012. Web. 03 Feb. 2013. Groupon went public for the first time on November 4, 2011 and was a big hit. They quickly surged from $20/share to $31/share. It was not more than 4 months until an accounting scandal arose with much controversy. After this first day boom, investors have lost more than $9 billion in stocks. The original backers of Groupon tried to hide the scandal by not selling their stocks to make it look like their incentives were to keep growing stocks. We know now they already had their payday; of the $946 million raised by Groupon, $810 million was spread out among its insiders of the company. The scandal started with company having to give back revenue to merchants that were running this deal. The scandal continued when the company revised its forth-quarter results, which was also the company’s first quarter it had to report earnings to the public. I think this is a terrible situation where everyone involved should be punished. The stocks scandal seems like it should have been noticed even earlier than it was. A company that seems to be very consistent and consistently profitable shouldn’t drop this dramatically. Mason and Eric Lefkosky hid this well by making it appear they were hurting also by keeping their stocks in it. It is amazing that this many people knew about this and they all kept quiet for a cut in the $810...

...Should College Athletes be paid? What really is the true definition of an amateur? The true definition is a person who engages in a pursuit, especially a sport, on an unpaid basis. If this is the true definition then why are the schools paying their athletes to come and help bring the attention there school. I believe if this is going to happen, they need to do it equally and give the athletes what they are deserving of. Many athletes are giving their health and stability to help make their colleges revenue. I believe the only thing that is standing against this becoming the future instead of just an idea is the men at the corrupted NCAA (National College Athletic Association). I think the NCAA and the athletic boards throughout the United States are corrupt and are money hungry. However, not every collegiate sports bring in the revenue such as football and basketball do for their universities. So if college athletes were ever to be paid it would be because of these sports. Mostly, as the U.S. News reports that the NCAA brings in more than 1 billion dollars from the NCAA Men’s and Women’s basketball tournaments (U.S. News), where does the money go for the athletes who bring them such wealth? It ends up into to the hands of the men and women that have enough money than they can handle. Which is not setting good examples for their athletes that they are in charge of. If they NCAA truly wants the amateurism to stick throughout time and not have to pay their athletes,...

...employee satisfaction and retention at a company” (para. 1). Home Depot’s main goal is employee satisfaction which correlates directly to Louie’s definition of career advancement. Career advancement is a huge opportunity at the Home Depot that many people tend to pass off after becoming complacent in different field positions. There are eight career areas within Home Depot and each area is interchangeable. The areas include: retail, merchandising, supply chain, services, contact centers, civilian, corporate, and technology. If an employee begans a career with the Home Depot in any of these areas and decides to advance, they can move vertically within that area or horizontally to a different career area. Victor Lipman (2013), contributor of Forbes Magazine, explains that, “clear opportunities for career advancement are an "especially powerful" employee motivator” (p. 1). Lipman (2013) also notes, "At times when career paths were clear, individuals tended to be more motivated, with tangible goals to work towards. At times when career paths were dim or nonexistent, individuals tended to be less motivated, less focused, more uncertain. […] That's why it makes good business sense for organizations of all sizes to spend time developing and maintaining thoughtfully structured career path systems." The overall message is to let employees know that there is no requirement to stay in one position once hired. The Home Depot provides tools for any employee to advance and grow...

...ENL 213 Vihang Jain 10.27.2014 Jack Ma’s Key to Success It’s a common saying “Where there is a will, there is a way” and a perfect example for this is the CEO of Alibaba, Jack Ma, who took the business world by storm with the largest IPO, exceeding the amount of 20 Billion dollars (CNBC, 2014). Despite being born in an underprivileged family, Jack Ma’s strong will to achieve his goals lead him to become one of the richest man in the world. Jack Ma’s success story is an inspiration to young adults, as it reinforces that dedication and hard work is the key to success. Jack Ma was born on 15th October 1964, in Hangzhou, China. He grew up in communist China with two siblings and strict parents (Stone & D’onfro, 2014). According to an article in Business Insider, Jack Ma often got into fights while growing up and he was never afraid of his opponents (Stone & D’onfro, 2014). He grew up during China’s cultural revolution and did not have the privilege to learn English. However, as China was opening up to the West, he saw an opportunity to learn English from the tourists who were visiting China. Every morning Jack Ma rode his bike for Forty minutes to get to the nearest tourist spot, so that he could learn English from the foreigners in exchange for a city tour. His dedication to learn English paid off, when he finally became an English teacher, after being rejected from KFC and dozens of other jobs (Stone & D’onfro, 2014). Life after High school was not any easier...

...provides every accommodation a particular segment of wealthy clientele could ever ask for. Understanding the market brought about a breakthrough opportunity for Ben Ohau Lodge, and it has led to some success. Relying solely on promotion via word of mouth, publicity, and public relations, the retreat has built a relatively steady base of customers. These customers fall into some rather exclusive dimensions. Some of the qualifying dimensions include the need for a safe and secure vacation spot, offering luxuries and amenities. They must also be in the upper social class, meaning they fall into the top 1% of the income bracket. This means that by default, the customers will be foreign rather than New Zealand locals. According to the Forbes List of Billionaires for 2013, only 3 of the 1426 are from New Zealand. One of the most defining dimensions of this market segment is a love of nature and isolation. Not all wealthy people fall under this category. Ben Ohau Lodge does not provide spas, shopping, or upscale dining, all of which would be attractive to a large segment of a wealthy market. Another defining dimension is the ability to be out of contact for the length of the vacation. Internet and cell phone service is at a low, if available at all. Many of the world’s wealthiest people need to be in constant contact with their business associates, which would place them out of the target market segment. Looking at their resources, the Lodge needs to keep their market...
