Jelly Belly

Jelly Belly was founded in 1869. Jelly Belly was transitioned through the family patriarchs through the decades. As a company well over 140 years in affect; Jelly Belly has maintained several key functions quite indifferent to modernization and others very adaptable. Two key items based on the statement above are:
A) Jelly Belly has found ways to quickly adapt new product lines into its existing product demands.
B) Its strong sense of keeping things as are in regards to how jelly beans are produced has not waivered or defaulted in quality. There are however several modifications that can be recommended in their 5 step process from start to finish.
Currently it takes anywhere from 7 to 21 days to completely make one batch of a specified jelly bean flavor. From a quick review provided by Zagat it was not easily determinable whether or not a specific flavor is started based on orders already requested, future predictability or a just because. There are no visual mark-ups as to what is being made at each station either. With this said it is recommended for the touristic point of view to be able to understand what flavor is being made at any particular station and why. The candy manufacturing plant is after all open to the public and visiting by hundreds of thousands of individuals every single year.
At the same time there is no knowledge provided to determine if each station is dedicated to only specific flavors or otherwise. However, it would be recommended to initiate another step into their manufacturing of these flavorful candies based on the base ingredients. For example a cherry sour jelly bean may just have the same base as a regular cherry flavored jelly bean and/or any other jelly bean that may utilize cherry juice as a base could be easily manufactured within the same machine and partitioned accordingly when it is time for the next phase of any given flavor. Basically, the base ingredients for this jelly bean manufacturer should be analyzed to then provide an established process in creating multiple flavors using the same machines or processes. Thus establishing a shorter start to completion time. Secondly, Jelly Belly has marketed flavors that are not so favorable such as vomit, skunk and so forth in an attempt to attract newer generations through a bit of humor and mischievous jelly bean tasting. For this Jelly Belly may want to re-consider if the demand for this product is worth production versus that of "normal" or more traditional flavor demands. It is also understandable that more adult flavor combinations are maintained such as those resembling draft beer or cocktails. However, strong ethical devaluation occurs when candies with these flavors are available to kids and adults alike. For this reason it is recommended that these specialty flavors be sold only to 18 yrs and older where and if possible. Lastly, it is very important for Jelly Belly's owners to stay traditional and of high quality in comparison to other jelly bean products. They do however offer other candy and product options that must also be further analyzed for cost versus gains ratios, continuality and product phase outs. Overall, a Jelly Belly has stayed successful, adaptable and innovative in the candy market. It is open to introducing new items but slow in phasing old items out. With 17 billion jelly beans being produced every single year you have to evaluate how much of these are actually consumed in any given year. The truth being that just because the product is sold it doesn't mean it is eaten. Therefore evaluating packaging for long term storage, package size and flavor variety may also help in the course of production output.

Under the laws administered by FDA, a food is adulterated if it contains (1) a poisonous or otherwise harmful substance that is not an inherent natural constituent of the food itself, in an amount that poses a reasonable possibility of injury to health, or (2) a substance that is an inherent natural constituent of the food itself; is not the result of environmental, agricultural, industrial, or other contamination; and is present in an amount that ordinarily renders the food injurious to health.
