...Evaluating Media for Credibility Myranda Anderson Critical Thinking CRT/205 December 7, 2012 Amanda Hawkins Evaluating Media for Credibility The two channels I chose to watch were CNN and MSNBC. On CNN I watched “New Day” broadcasted on December 13, 2013 at 7am. On MSNBC I watched “Morning Joe” broadcasted on December 13, 2013 at 8am. The news program I felt was the most credible was CNN. First, CNN allowed more broadcast time for their segments compared to MSNBC. CNN’s broadcasts seemed more detailed than MSNBC’S broadcasts which gave me a better insight into the story line. I compared three different stories between the two news channels. I say the stories listed below were credible even though I did not agree with some of the words used by the news reporters. For instance, the story on CNN about the laser lights, the news reporter used the word “stupid” several times. He should have chosen a better word to use or should have just omitted the word entirely. The story about Ethan Couch the news reporter used words such as “slap on the wrist”, “money influence”, and “cushy, I don’t care family”. The...

...Evaluating the Media for Credibility CRT 205 July 3, 2012 LaToya Gilbert Evaluating the Media for Credibility I watched the Fox News with Shepard Smith on channel 360 at 6:00pm. The show touched on several different stories that are happening throughout the world. Most of the stories that were mentioned received about at least two to three minutes of air time the first thirty minutes of the news broadcast. The second half of the hour that was referred to as “the bottom half of the hour” by Shepard Smith was said to contain the top stories. The stories that were talked about in this portion of the show had about at least 5 minutes of air time. The majority of the stories that were given air time on the show were showing the negative issues to topics that had happened. I believe that Shepard Smith did a great job providing the top stories to his audience with enough information facts and examples to make the stories and the issues believable. The current drought status, botched jewelry store robbery, tropical storm and drunk driver were briefly mentioned. The Olympics is a huge story at this point in time. They talked about Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte and the competition they have going against each other. By mentioning this they have made it more enticing and people will want to watch to see the outcome. They focus should be on beating the other team but the show is helping sell the story by focusing on their individual battle going on between themselves. Another...

Peer-Reviewed Article A Conceptual Framework for Using and Evaluating Web-Based Learning Resources in School Education This article is regarding Web-based learning resources. This is important to my research as I’m leaning toward distant learning for minorities and the education gap it can help to bridle. Web-based learning resources gives teachers a wide range of new teaching experiences that are not possible in traditional classroom. This paper provides research in an area where little study has been done. The purpose of this paper is to provide a conceptual framework to explore the design and evaluation of Web-based learning resources in school education. The paper also examines the way in which the framework is used to evaluate students’ and teachers’ perceptions of Web-based learning resources by means of survey questionnaires. (Hadjerrouit, 2010) This paper is a source of refernce for my research as it provides an idea of Web-based learning resources that may be available fo minorities for Distant Education. Peer-Review Being a peer-reviewed article, I know that other scholars in this author's field has critically assessed the draft of this paper before it was publshed. I know paper has passed through a rigourous review process, leaving me with encouragement of integrity of the author. ...Evaluating Media for Credibility Jose Fill University of Phoenix Critical Thinking CRT/205 Jill Rossi August 12, 2012 Evaluating Media for Credibility On August 12, 2012 I watched the CNN news broadcast for What’s next for Mars? Searching for Alien Life on Mars. (CNN [CNN], 2012, p. 1) CNN interviewed Author Lawrence Krauss about what the next steps will be for the rover Curiosity on mars. Lawrence Krauss discussed the different pictures taken from mars so far and the next logical step from here is to either discover past life on mars or even possibly life on mars now. Lawrence Krauss thinks we are cousins of mars and we could actually be Martians. On August 11, 2012 Lex18.com aired the article NASA’s mega rover landed on mars. What’s next? ("Lex18.com," 2012, p. 1) This article only covered on paragraph on what’s next for mars. In that paragraph it states “that the Curiosity rover is on a quest to learn whether the Martian environment could have been favorable for microbial life”.("Lex18.com," 2012, para. 1) The rest of the article just goes on about how and when then Curiosity rover landed. I feel that the CNN news video was more credible because it went into more detail on what the real next step mars will be. The other article wasn’t a video and really didn’t state anything special about the issue. I feel this news headliner was misleading and bare. Plus I couldn’t even find who wrote about it. CNN actually had a credible source, Author Lawrence Krauss. I found...

...Content Quality Assessment Related Frameworks for Social Media Kevin Chai, Vidyasagar Potdar, and Tharam Dillon Digital Ecosystems and Business Intelligence Institute, Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Australia kevin.chai@postgrad.curtin.edu.au, {v.potdar,t.dillon}@curtin.edu.au Abstract. The assessment of content quality (CQ) in social media adds a layer of complexity over traditional information quality assessment frameworks. Challenges arise in accurately evaluating the quality of content that has been created by users from different backgrounds, for different domains and consumed by users with different requirements. This paper presents a comprehensive review of 19 existing CQ assessment related frameworks for social media in addition to proposing directions for framework improvements. Keywords: content quality assessment, social media, discussion forums, wikis, weblogs. 1 Introduction Information quality (IQ) has been widely defined in literature by its fitness for use. Existing research in the field of assessing IQ within traditional information systems is relatively mature and has led to the discovery and validation of numerous quality dimensions and metrics [2, 15, 17, 29, 35]. Knight & Burn (2005) have presented a comprehensive review of literature in the realm of assessing IQ frameworks. Common IQ dimensions that were identified from their review are presented in Table 1. The definitions of these dimensions have been included from Wang & Strong (1996)...

...church and get an insight of a former member. My chosen online resources included Reddit and Youtube, as my two social media platform; Wikipedia and the group’s website as the two informational site I used to research on this topic. The Wikipedia page on Westboro Baptist Church (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church) gave me a good basis for my topic. I chose this informational site as it contained current information, historical background about the group, with links referencing current news articles and media coverages on the church. It also assisted me in identifying the group’s official informational site, www.godhatefags.com. The Wikipedia page gave me solid factual and unbiased understanding of Westboro Baptist Church, whilst the group’s website is a biased source of information, and a first-hand account from the church itself, which I found the most interesting. Their message on their website was conveyed via online articles, videos, open letters; this allowed me to get a deeper understanding of the church by reviewing the various media platforms on this website. Both informational website allowed me to assimilate the knowledge I learned from Wikipedia, combining with the new information I extracted on the groups website it gave me confidence to form my own personal view and raised my level of curiosity. Through my chosen online social media platforms, I was able to satisfy this curiosity. I chose a Reddit thread that was started by Lauren Drain (http://www...

...How do you evaluate sources of validity? We, as University of Phoenix students have different options to do research for our papers. The most reliable information source will be the University Library. Other sources available would be the Internet, media (journals, news papers) and encyclopedias, almanacs and dictionaries. Conducting research on the Internet for our courses is going to make evaluating the sources for validity necessary. Unlike the university library collection – “evaluated and selected for usefulness and reliability by educated librarians” – websites and Internet resources are not necessarily evaluated by anyone. That’s why we have to use our critical thinking in evaluating those sources. Using the academic or governmental directories is in our advantage because we know that somebody screened them and listed only those that were reliable and updated. An easy to use tool for evaluating the Internet sources was offered by Robert Harris, professor and author of WebQuester: A guide book to the web. It’s called CARS test for information quality (Credibility, Accuracy, Reasonableness and Support). What we have to question using this test would be anonymous materials, negative evaluations of the materials, little or no evidence of quality control and bad grammar or misspelled words. You have to ask yourself who the author is and whether or not he is a recognized expert. Some signals of lack of accuracy would be lack of date, (you have to know how recent the source...

... Thus, ensuring whether or not the ad the marketing team invested time and capital on is delivering the results required. Once understanding which tactics are appropriate and which aspects of the advertisement were not as effective, one can then better understand how to optimize the next advertisement campaign and achieve the goals set up originally. Advertising effectiveness can be defined as the “evaluation of the performance of specific promotional programme elements – the approach depends a lot on the objectives of the advertising” (Belch and Belch, 2012, pg596-597). Reasons for why it is necessary to measure the effectiveness of an advert varies from avoiding costly mistakes, to increasing the efficiency of advertising by evaluating alternative strategies. It would be beneficial for a company to do this in order to enhance sales and structure better outcomes in the future. However, doing so is costly for the organization and a long process. There may also be conflict within the company, regarding to the objections of creativity and disagreement on what to test. It would be necessary for the effectiveness to be measured if there was a significant loss financially. Statistics or metrics could then be used to measure advertising effectiveness. Reach is a metric for advertising effectiveness and this measures the number of people who saw the advertisement. This can be done for a majority of companies’ e.g. local television stations report the number of viewers...

...Credibility Paragraph Shelby St. John Serena Blankenship-Mobley Gage Mobley HUM/186 November 1, 2012 Christa Menninger When exploring sites such as Factcheck, Politifact, and Snopes people can gain knowledge on recent updates on politics, news, what is hot in society, and could also research current events that have or are happening. Each website plays a role in the evaluation of media. Factcheck really allows you to figure out information that you may have questioned during a politics debate. In the sites about us section, it states that it is an organization that wants to reduce the confusion and deception of politics. So if anyone is unclear of what the media is saying specifically about politics and wants to check the information for them, can do so at Factcheck.org. Politifact plays the same role as Factcheck.org, it is just a website that allows you to check if the politics you hear from the media are true or not. It is a great resource for finding out the truth about politics. It is known that for most years the turnout for voting is over half of population that is of age. (Infoplease.com) Always double checking what your candidate says in an election is very important, and these two sites allow you to do just that. If you are just interested in finding out what is the latest news in society, snopes.com clears up any rumors or misconceptions you may have about urban legends, folklore, and really anything you hear in society. ...Advantages and Disadvantages of social media Tabitha HUM/186 May 7, 2012 University of Phoenix Advantages and Disadvantages of social media In today’s world, many people depend on the internet for news and entertainment, yet other people worry about how reliable it can really be. Now days you can sign on the internet and find any information that you want, from the weather, to the news, to your favorite video. Many people have started to rely on the internet for research for school, but with anyone being able to post anything, how do you know what you find is creditable? There are many advantages of easily obtainable information on the internet, such as services, searching things, and being able to download things. The internet offers many companies ways to help service customers today. Now instead of mailing in your bills, you are able to sign onto the web and make a payment with one click, or even do some shopping without even leaving your home. This leads to searching things, ‘thousands of groups and organizations have moved online, many of them aggressively promoting their presence through the use of search engines, email lists, and banner advertisements.” (Wright 2005) Also you are able to download videos, games, favorite television shows and movies for free to watch at your leisure. While the advantages seem great, there are also some disadvantages that come with easily obtainable information. Some of those disadvantages are theft of personal information,...

...COM10003 Learning and Communicating Online Assessment 3: Reflective essay This essay will discuss how my use of online information has grown from being merely a consumer, to now being able to critically evaluate online sources for credibility and suitability for use in academic work. My role in producing an online informational resource has been enhanced by both the readings, and the experience gained in the collaborative process involved in working as a team. This is my first experience at online collaboration and I will examine the challenges encountered using this medium of communication, how I dealt with them, the lessons learned, and what I would do differently during future collaborative work. Before this course, my experience with online sources of information had been limited to an observer status, and although I had read from a variety of sources online, and considered myself capable of sorting truth from fiction, I had never realised the extent to which information can and should be evaluated. A study conducted by Scholz-Crane 1998 (cited in Metzger, 2007, pp. 2080-2081) explains that a lax attitude toward proving the accuracy and credibility of websites is prevalent among college students. This information has encouraged me to be more critical in regard to information found on the web, and I now apply the criteria espoused by Tate, (2010, pp. 35-36) of checking for accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency and coverage. According to Treise et al (2003, cited in...
