Dear Eveline, I know that you don’t have the easiest life at home providing for you and your father at such a young age and that sometimes leaving with Frank seems like your only way out for you to have a better life. It’s hard for you to move past all the memories that you have of your mother and the promises that you made to her. Although you said you would live with Frank, is that really a better a life for you? Does frank really love you, do you really love him, or are you just looking for someone to rescue you? Your father isn’t always the happiest man to be around but he does love you and care for you. I think that it’s best that you pray about the situation and see where God leads your heart. The relationship that you have with your father and brother are what bring a lot of the memories of your mother back to you. I think that you should stay in Dublin, with your family, and continue on with and providing for you and your father. Frank might be able to rescue you, but I don’t believe that he will be offering you a better life. You are going to miss your mother and I fear that you are going to have regret if you leave and don’t fulfill the promises you made to your mother before she died. Dear Evelines father, Your daughter Eveline has left you because you were not going to trap her in domesticity, you beat her, or abused her every single day. Although her mother had died she do not want to be in charge of the things that her mother took care of and she do not want to be talked down or belittled. She deserve a right to happiness in life. She is leaving before she gets trapped into living a life that she is not happy with. She does love you, but she can’t afford to be treated badly, or beaten due to your alcoholic behavior.

Dear Frank, I do care about you and have thought long and hard about my decision. When my mother died I promised her that I would stay here and take care of things at home, if I leave I will not be holding up to my words with her. I do see the posibilites of life that I can have with you and the romantic life that I will get to have but can’t leave with you. It is hard to make this decision and to hear you call for me but I know that I am making the right decison to stay home and care for my family like I had promised my mother.

...Harsha Perera Professor Hogan English Comp 201 014 October 2, 2012 Comparison of Eveline and Connie “Eveline” and “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” are similar stories set in different eras. “Eveline” is a short story written by James Joyce. “Where are you going, Where have you been” is a short story written by Joyce Carol Oates. Eveline and Connie are two teenage girls who are ultimately trapped by the influences of their cultures. The church plays a heavy influence on Eveline throughout the story. Eveline is conflicted on whether she should leave with Frank or stay behind with her father. The unknown priest mentioned in the story appears to be significant because of his absence. The priest represents the Catholic Church, a powerful influence in Dublin but he is only remembered from a “yellowing photograph” (Joyce 4). Eveline's religion is not a relief to her at this point in her life; it is a set of rules to live by, which are deeply implanted in her. Eveline is left with obligations and duties, "promises made to Blessed Margaret Mary Alacoque"(Joyce 4), but she does not have support from a church to help her carry them out. The nameless priest who represents the church, like everyone else immigrated to a place far away. Another cultural factor that traps Eveline is the Patriarchal household. Eveline is living with a father who is becoming more and more abusive. She is the last that’s left of her family, her mother has died and her brothers have...

...1102 09/19/2013 Eveline In the short story ”Eveline” by James Joyce, Eveline, the protagonist was given the opportunity to escape from her hard unendurable life at home and lived a life of true happiness at Buenos Ayres with Frank, her lover. Throughout the story, Eveline was faced with a few good memories of her past from her childhood and her mother; however she also faced the horrible flashbacks of her mother’s illness and her father’s violence. In the end, she did not leave with Frank, Eveline’s indecisiveness and the burden of her family’s duties made her stay. By not taking that opportunity, Eveline probably missed a life of exploration with Frank. Eveline would have had the chance to know what independence feels like and she would have had the chance to experience individual freedom. Instead, her life afterwards is a life of regret and imprisonment with her family. Being an only child, she is bound by her family’s actions and their duties. Eveline has taken on an incredible part of the burden in keeping the family together. Her father was an overbearing and unfair man who took his daughters earnings for himself; and rather than appreciating her sacrifices, he ridiculed her. As she now lived with her father and her two brothers, she felt tired and frustrated with her father’s commands and her everyday life. Everyday she sadly waited for Frank to come back into her life once again and fill her life with happiness. Eveline may possibily in...

...James Joyce, “Eveline”, published in 1914 almost a decade ago from our present time, relates the story of a very young woman from Ireland, who is (just over 19), in between the sensitive age of adolescence and maturity. The religion guide and plays an important role in the average Irish people’s life, specially if a person is an unmarried single young woman. That “Irish background” eventually shapes and influences and impacts the future of “Eveline” in a very tragic and dramatic way till the “End” of this story. Eveline, who stands in between the criss-cross roads of making a very important life times’ decision, of choosing between her future married life with a man (Frank) she truly believed she loved, and the family she was obliged to serve, feed, look after and take care of, constantly in spite of all her personal hardships and sacrifices. The “End,” and the related theme of the “End” of this very touching short story by J.Joyce “Eveline” is linked strongly with it’s “Beginning”, which gradually unfolds with Eveline contemplating seriously upon her “Past”, “Present” and the “Coming Future”. Sitting in a very gloomy, dull and dusty room filled with “the odour of dusty cretonne”, worn out curtains, and an old yellowed picture which hung on the wall upon the broken harmonium beside the coloured print of the promises made to Blessed Margaret Mary Alacoque. Eveline’s “Past,” partly consisted of her simple growing up childhood with the neighbouring children of the...

...Symbolism in Eveline and Everyday Use Symbolism is a common part of any story; from a play to a poem. In both Eveline and Everyday Use, hidden symbols are used that represent each character. In Eveline, the symbol used is dust which covers everything in Eveline’s life. In Everyday Use, the quilt is the symbol that represents heritage. Also, additional symbols are used to define each character. Symbols add a hidden meaning to the story that can add depth to the characters. In James Joyce’s short story, a prominent symbol is dust. Eveline’s character has lots of dust, since she is lifeless, and never advancing. In Eveline, Eveline looks around her room taking everything in. She observes “all its familiar objects which she had dusted once a week for so many years, wondering where on earth all the dust came from (McMahan et al. 3).” This means that she is looking at her life and all the dust that has accumulated over the years. She is noticing how stale and boring her life is due to all the pressures of her dad. Her dad is the main cause of dust build up all these years. Her father abuses her and “says what he would do to her only for her dead mother’s sake (McMahan et al. 4).” The “dust” in Eveline’s life is due to the pressure of taking care of her dad, and trying to support him. Over the years the dust kept piling up, making the dust unmanageable, causing her to freak out at the end of the story. Just as she is about to board the boat, she thinks of what her mother made Eveline promise...

...Imago theaters is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary with the opening of the new production Ana, co-written by Pierre Yves Lemieux and Clare Duffy. Ana takes the audience on a trip through the lives of several woman, all linked by one common ability, the ability to split. The play demonstrates the life changing and difficult choices they must make and illustrates the different roles woman played throughout the ages. The play is brought along by it’s ingenious stage set and it’s talented, multi-cultural cast. This bilingual piece is playing at Espace Go until December 10 and is already capturing attention for it’s mildly disturbing plot. Ana is the story of a child born in 5000 BC in Ur, the first city of the world according to legend. (First Ana) was the daughter of the goddess of light and the goddess of dark. During a moment of distress or extreme emotion, Ana splits in two, creating another Ana to appear in a different time, in a different place, with no memory or knowledge of her past and dark ability. The play is a collage of several stories, all narrated by Alain Goulem who strives to tie all the loose ends together, playing the ringmaster of the play. The journey of Ana is accompanied by a secondary plot: the dark and painful relationship with her mother, who abandoned her at a young age and haunts Ana’s decisions pertaining to her own child. Although the plot is quite heavy, the stage setting is very simple. The six Anas emerge from six rectangular boxes with glass...

Research Paper On Eveline

...Eveline’s Destiny Joyce’s character Eveline desire’s more out of life. More happiness, respect, and love. She analyzes her past, her present, and dreams of the future. All the while seeking for someone else to provide the happiness she so longs for. Someone to come and take away all her pain and responsibility so she can live happily ever after. She must choose her destiny. Should she stay at home with her familiar yet unhappy life, or should she go away with Frank and leave her home like the others? Perhaps her mother’s last words will help her decide in the end, “Derevaun Seraun!” (513). The end of pleasure is pain. Eveline remembers happiness and friendship in her past. Her life was more pleasurable when her mother was alive. Her father was much nicer to her then, he never abused her as he would her brothers. Playing in the field across the street every evening with her siblings and friends, brought Eveline much happiness until her father would chase them down waving his blackthorn stick. While reminiscing, memories of the deaths of her brother Ernest, Tizzie Dunn, and her mother came to her mind. Her promise she made to her mother cries in her head, “keep the home together for as...

James Joyce, “Eveline

...SHE sat at the window watching the evening invade the avenue. Her head was leaned against the window curtains and in her nostrils was the odour of dusty cretonne. She was tired. Few people passed. The man out of the last house passed on his way home; she heard his footsteps clacking along the concrete pavement and afterwards crunching on the cinder path before the new red houses. One time there used to be a field there in which they used to play every evening with other people's children. Then a man from Belfast bought the field and built houses in it--not like their little brown houses but bright brick houses with shining roofs. The children of the avenue used to play together in that field --the Devines, the Waters, the Dunns, little Keogh the cripple, she and her brothers and sisters. Ernest, however, never played: he was too grown up. Her father used often to hunt them in out of the field with his blackthorn stick; but usually little Keogh used to keep nix and call out when he saw her father coming. Still they seemed to have been rather happy then. Her father was not so bad then; and besides, her mother was alive. That was a long time ago; she and her brothers and sisters were all grown up her mother was dead. Tizzie Dunn was dead, too, and the Waters had gone back to England. Everything changes. Now she was going to go away like the others, to leave her home. Home! She looked round the room, reviewing all its familiar objects which she had dusted once a week for so many...

Eveline - Summary & Character Analysis

...Eveline - Short SummaryThe story starts off with Eveline sitting in a chair by the window in her house, prepering to leave home. She wants to move from her father, because she has lived there for her entire life, and her father has a drinking problem, and he is too violent to both Eveline and her siblings. Eveline "thinks" she is in love with a sailor called Frank, who seems like a very gentle and friendly person, she may well be in love with him, but when she stands at the dock with the choice of leaving with Frank, or staying home, she goes into shock and suddenly screams. She is afraid of what's going to happend if she leaves with him, what if he leaves her shortly after, what if Frank isn't such a nice guy at all, she doesn't have the selfconfidence to take the final step. The death of her mother and her violent father, has affected her alot, and she has gotten very afraid of taking her own decisions.Character Analysis - Eveline Eveline is a young women living with her father. James Joyce

...therefore it became an under-developed country. He chose Dublin as it was the ‘centre of paralysis’ and had a particularly dramatic effect in ‘Eveline’ (a story of adolescence). Firstly, to portray Eveline’s dilemma, the window symbolises the parallel between Eveline’s current situation on one side and the world she has the opportunity to explore on the other. She sits at ‘the window watching the evening invade the avenue’ as she ponders her past, present and future life. The personification of the ‘evening’ invading her hometown implies how she feels threatened, after being constrained to a repetitive life for years, the possibility of escape has risen and she is not sure if she wants to give up her predictable life. Despite her indecisiveness, she does not want a ‘life of commonplace sacrifices’ similar to her Mothers. Eveline’s repetitive routine has formed a prison around her, capturing her in an unhappy life she finds difficult to leave, despite her abusive father. Through the first part of the story, Joyce uses a semantic field of verbs: ‘divided’, ‘leave’, ‘running out’ and ‘escape’ to elicit her confusion. Ideas of distance between Eveline and her penultimate decision are instilled upon the reader’s thoughts by the semantic field of uncertainty that also foreshadows Eveline’s epiphany. As the evening ‘deepened in the avenue’ Eveline began to recall the past, primarily the happy moments, which overshadow the reality of her unhappy life in the present. The ‘picnic’ and ‘ghost...

Character

..."There is no more miserable human being than one in whom nothing is habitual but indecision (James)." Originally appearing in Dubliners, a compilation of vignettes by James Joyce, his short story Eveline is the tale of such an unfortunate individual. Anxious, timid, scared, perhaps even terrified -- all these describe Eveline. She is a frightened, indecisive young woman poised between her past and her future. Eveline loves her father but is fearful of him. She tries to hold onto good memories of her father, thinking "sometimes he could be very nice (Joyce 5)," but has seen what her father has done to her siblings when he would "hunt them in out of the field with his blackthorn stick (Joyce 4)." As of late she has begun to feel "herself in danger of her father's violence (Joyce 4)." Ironically, her father has "begun to threaten her and say what he'd do to her only for her dead mother's sake (Joyce 5)." Eveline wants a new life but is afraid to let go of her past. She dreams of a place where "people would treat her with respect (Joyce 4)" and when contemplating her future, hopes "to explore a new life with Frank (Joyce 5)." When, in a moment of terror she realizes that "she must escape (Joyce 6)," it seems to steel her determination to make a new home for herself elsewhere. On the other hand, she is comfortable with the "familiar objects from which she had never dreamed of being divided (Joyce 4)." She rationalizes that: "In her home ...
