Everest Disaster Of 1996 Research Paper

In the Everest disaster of 1996, the expedition leaders, Rob Hall and Scott Fischer were the main cause of deaths. Both leaders, Hall and Fischer seemed convincing that their clients would summit, but events that year on Everest shows otherwise. The actions that led up to this disaster and many deaths include Hall and Fischer ignoring their own set safety precautions, Fischer not having a well-working acclimatization plan, and both expedition leaders hired inexperienced guides for Everest. Rob Hall and Scott Fischer were the main causes of death on Everest in May 1996. Expeditions on Everest have a set of safety guidelines to follow for a reason, otherwise, negative consequences may occur. Hall and Fischer felt assured that they would have another successful year like the previous one, and when Hall realized things were not looking good for his business, he abandoned his own rules. As Krakauer mentioned, “In fact the only people to reach the summit before 2:00 p.m. were Boukreev, Harris, Beidlemean, Adams, Schoening, and me; if Fischer and Hall had been true toothier pre-arranged rules, everyone else would have turned back before …show more content…
Krakauer claimed,”Depending on each person’s acclimatization and psychological makeup, we would still be able to function above the South Col—but not well, and not for long.” Although Fischer’s team may have been more successful in reaching the summit than Hall’s team, the conditions of his clients showed an unsuccessful acclimatization plan. For example, Sandy Hill Pittman was in horrible condition, she could barely walk on her own, and ended up needing a shot of diamorphine. She was deteriorating as well as Yasuko Namba. A better plan could’ve have improved the situation. Namba ended up dead while Pittman was carried up the mountain by Lapsang, and later rescued

Debunking the Goal Setting Theory

...Debunking the Goal Setting Theory Presented to Trudy Dunson, Instructor MGMT 2125, Performance Management By Andrea Smith 10/13/2014 Often times in the business world, organizations become so fixated on the goals they set, that when they begin to go wrong, an organization will invest more into that goal instead of looking for a different path. Oliver Burkeman’s book, “The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can’t Stand Positive Thinking” devotes a whole chapter to the importance or lack thereof of setting goals. In his book, he tells a story of Chris Kayes who was on the foothills of Mt. Everest at the same time the tragedy that took the lives of eight climbers depicted in the book, “In Thin Air.” Kayes observed even through this tragedy, that the climbers did everything correct based on the goal setting theory; they had a clear goal and worked to achieve it above all else however the results were devastating still. In this example, the climbers ignored the evidence that told them that they should turn away from their goal an instead invested more time and energy which led to their deaths. According to Locke and Latham (2006) as long as a person is committed to their goal and does not have any other conflicting goals, there is a positive relationship between the goal and performance. Unfortunately though, goal setting has been prescribed and not monitored. Therefore, like all prescription abuse, organizations fail to recognize the harm that goals can caused due to creating...

Liminality

...Liminality and Communitas as new sources of Social Capital in Business Relationship Dynamics Dr Annmarie Ryan, Department of Management and Marketing, Kemmy Business School, University of Limerick, Ireland. Competitive Paper Abstract In this paper I develop a framework for the study of business relationships through the lens of liminality. This is achieved by discussing the work of Turner in relation to rites and rituals and their role in society. Those dimensions of the concept of liminality and communitas that are important for this study therefore include: that it involves interaction outside everyday lived experience; that liminality is constructed and is neither self-evident or naturally occurring; involves the transformation re-discovery and re-appropriation of every day spaces, through separation, or divestiture process, and subsequently (re)incorporated into the everyday through processes of investiture and importantly, incorporates a shared experience that can impact on relations between those who share the experience beyond the event itself. The concept of liminality is offered as a way to enable researchers to understand the interactions between managers in relationships in a new way. The focus of this paper is therefore threefold: 1/ to expand upon the concept of creating, holding and intensifying liminal space and 2/consideration of the effect of this on the organisation and 3/ reflection on this on-going entering into and leaving of liminal space...

...ABSTRACT This project is based on “BPO INDUSTRY IN INDIA”. Business Process Outsourcing is the delegation of one or more of the business processes to an external provider, which in turn owns, manages and controls the selected processes based on some specific standards. It was started in India in early 1980’s by the British Airways who set-up their captive unit in Delhi. BPO in India starts with low-end data entry processes, but now it moves up the value chain and deals in core business processes also. Both voice and non-voice BPO Industry exists in India. Various types of services are performed, call centres being the attraction today for the youth. BPO operates through three types of business models viz. - Transactional, Niche and Comprehensive. ...IGOROTS * Home * IGOROT SONGS * IGOROT DANCE * IGOROT TRADITIONS * MONEY ON THE MOUNTAIN IGOROT TRADITIONS IGOROT TRADITIONS When we talk about Igorot identity and culture, we also have to consider the time. My point is that: what I am going to share in this article concerning the Igorot culture might not be the same practiced by the Igorots of today. It has made variations by the passing of time, which is also normally happening to many other cultures, but the main core of respect and reverence to ancestors and to those who had just passed is still there. The Igorot culture that I like to share is about our practices and beliefs during the "time of Death". Death is part of the cycle of life. Igorots practice this part of life cycle with a great meaning and importance. Before the advent of Christianity in the Igorotlandia, the Igorots or the people of the Cordilleran region in the Philippines were animist or pagans. Our reverence or the importance of giving honor to our ancestors is a part of our daily activities. We consider our ancestors still to be with us, only that they exist in another world or dimension. Whenever we have some special feasts (e.g., occasions during death, wedding, family gathering, etc.), when we undertake something special (like going somewhere to look for a job or during thanksgiving), we perform some special offer. We call this "Menpalti/ Menkanyaw", an act of butchering and offering animals. During these times we call them...

The investigation was conducted from both a theoretical and an empirical point of view. The contribution of the same industry to the world economy is considerable. Many countries are now dependent on this sector for foreign currency earnings. Every destination country is trying to achieve more gain by developing this industry. The expansion of the tourism through out the world has increased competition among the tourist destinations, trying to attract more tourists by adopting appropriate marketing techniques and strategies. ...Authoritarianism Authoritarianism is a form of social organization characterized by submission to authority. It is usually opposed to individualism and democracy. In politics, an authoritarian government is one in which political authority is concentrated in a small group of politician. Characteristics Authoritarianism is characterized by highly concentrated and centralized power maintained by political repression and the exclusion of potential challengers. It uses political parties and mass organizations to mobilize people around the goals of the regime. Authoritarianism emphasizes the rule of the few; it often includes election rigging, political decisions being made by a select group of officials behind closed doors, a bureaucracy that sometimes operates independently of rules, which does not properly supervise elected officials, and fails to serve the concerns of the constituencies they purportedly serve. Authoritarianism also tends to embrace the informal and unregulated exercise of political power, a leadership that is "self-appointed and even if elected cannot be displaced by citizens' free choice among competitors," the arbitrary deprivation of civil liberties, and little tolerance for meaningful opposition; A range of social controls also attempt to stifle civil society, while political stability is maintained by control over and support of the armed forces, a pervasive bureaucracy staffed by the regime, and creation of allegiance through various means of socialization and...
