...AP English Literature and Composition 2012 Summer Reading Assignment I. DRAMA Oedipus Rex by Sophocles We are not requiring any particular edition of the play; however, we would highly recommend a version which includes supplemental materials/explanations of Greek drama and Greek mythology. Purchase, read, and annotate the play prior to the first day of class. It would be wise to focus your annotation on instances of dramatic irony, images of vision and blindness, and tension between fate and free will. The following literary analysis assignment will be collected during the second week of school. LITERARY ANALYSIS OF DRAMA In a typed, one-page essay, offer your assessment of Oedipus at the end of the play. Was he foolish? Heroic? Fated? Support with textual evidence as appropriate and follow MLA format. II. READING FOR PLEASURE Read a book—fiction or non-fiction—strictly for pleasure. Strong readers and writers have a wealth of textual experiences and a vast amount of background knowledge from which to draw. The most important aspect of this assignment is that you select a work you will enjoy reading. During the first week of class, you will conduct a book talk over your selected work in which you will “sell” the experience of reading your book to your peers, so pick something good! Some suggestions for selecting your “reading for pleasure” book include, but are not limited to: * Classic works of literature from an era, author, or genre you...

...The Warcraft III Adventure June 7, 2013 PROLOGUE: The Adventure Begins When this homework was assigned last Saturday, I knew then that this was going to be an adventure. I have never played Warcraft-DOTA before but, I am aware that it is an addictive game. I know this because my 20-year old nephew, still a third year industrial engineering student up to this day, was an excessively avid player. Two years of his college life were wasted because of his addiction with the game. He could have been graduating this year if not for the addiction. Thus, when I heard from Professor Nicart that the game has been lauded by no less than The Harvard School of Business because of its contribution in developing management skills, I was intrigued. Then, she said we have to play the game at least 30 minutes a day for the next 5 to 6 days, I was amused and thought to myself that my nephew would have a blast when he hears about this. Hence, the adventure for me began even before I would play the game. CHAPTER ONE: Acquiring The Warcraft-DOTA File I had a very busy schedule ahead of me this week. I thought that in order to have this homework done, I had to finish it as soon as possible. So, as soon as I got back home last Saturday, which was about 7:30 PM because electricity in our area only came back around that time, I immediately searched if the “Warcraft-DOTA” file was installed in our computer. It was not. I also searched the other laptops we had at home and I didn’t...

...Curriculum In Quality Education By : Rohmat Muflikhul Huda 1. Introduction In education we are never separated from the curriculum. The basis for the creation of curriculum educational settings. The curriculum is said to be successful if the trip went smoothly, and can be said to be in accordance with the plan. However, the curriculum is said to fail when encountering many obstacles along the way that makes the pace of the curriculum itself becomes obstructed. There are at least 4 times a change of curriculum in Indonesia, that began 94 years, from 1994 to the enactment of curriculum, until now is curriculum 2013. I chose this topic, because of the many debates every time to discuss curriculum that affect the level or quality of education itself. Basically, the quality of education itself is not only influenced by the course curriculum, but the way teachers teach and also the effectiveness of the learning process also greatly affect the quality of education. That which will be discussed later in this article, so it is not just the curriculum that will be discussed in this article, but the effectiveness, a great system in education, and also a good way of how the education will also be discussed in this article. 2. Discussion Background Research Education is very important in the lives of individuals around the world. It is also generally recognized that education is a key element in the socio – economic nation building. Each level has its own...

...Scott Denham Deadbolt Project Executive Summary My name is Scott Denham. I am 29 years old and I grew up in Oregon. My background goes to early childhood, when I was very curious about finding out the way things work. As a young boy I would get watches for Christmas and tear them apart to see what was inside and how it worked. Later in life it was helping my father, who was a young engineer, tearing apart a transmission on a 1976 Honda Civic, CVCC, just to be around that. As I grew older I began racing motocross, and I was my own mechanic. I learned by practice what was inside an engine and how it worked. At age 18 I began chasing after adrenaline. The next step in my quest for a rush was skydiving. After a few years of skydiving I joined the industry working for Velocity Sports building container and harness systems for skydiving. I began coming up with ideas for new invention and dreamed of creating my own when that day came. I joined the army shortly after this and spent a few years in combat arms before deploying and eventually leaving the army. Upon leaving the army I came back to Oregon where I grew up to get an education and do something with my life. I began dating a woman, who shortly after we began dating had her deadbolt picked on her door and a man gained access to her home. When we discussed the incident with the management at the apartment complex, she suggested a deadbolt that did not have an outside face with a key slot. We said ok, lets get this done. She...

...Author’s Name Instructor’s Name Course Number Date of Submission Home Schooling “There are about 2.2 million home-educated students in the United States, and it appears that the numbers are expected to continue increasing in the coming years” (NHERI). Families that have embraced home schooling therefore, do not depend on the public, tax-funded resources to help their children in education. The current homeschool program according to NHERI commenced in the 1970s when John Holt, an advocate of school reforms and an educational theorist started campaigns urging individuals that formal schools enhanced rote learning intended to oppress students in classrooms and that the institutions’ curriculum were designed to make learners compliant employees. Holt went on to publish his newsletter, Growing Without Schooling in which he conveyed public schools to be disorderly, scary for learners, morally irresolute and most of all, academically underachieving, hence detrimental to children. Despite the opposition that the unorthodox education faced in its initiation, it has grown rapidly, and people currently perceive it as an acceptable educational alternative in this 21st century. Therefore, regardless of the disadvantages in home education such as lack of social development, missed experiences, and reduced competition among others, parents should adopt this education system because it is equally, if not more, beneficial since it creates the opportunity for personalized learning, assured safety...

...A&P and Araby John Updike's A & P and James Joyce's Araby share many of the same literary traits. The primary focus of the two stories revolves around a young man who is compelled to decipher the different between cruel reality and the fantasies of romance that play in his head. That the man does, indeed, discover the difference is what sets him off into emotional collapse. One of the main similarities between the two stories is the fact that the main character, who is also the protagonist, has built up incredible, yet unrealistic, expectations of women, having focused upon one in particular towards which he places all his unrequited affection. The expectation these men hold when finally "face to face with their object of worship" (Wells, 1993, p. 127) is what sends the final and crushing blow of reality: The rejection they suffer is far too great for them to bear. Updike is famous for taking other author's works and twisting them so that they reflect a more contemporary flavor. While the story remains the same, the climate is singular only to Updike. This is the reason why there are similarities as well as deviations from Joyce's original piece. Plot, theme and detail are three of the most resembling aspects of the two stories over all other literary components; characteristic of both writers' works, each rendition offers its own unique perspective upon the young man's romantic infatuation. Not only are descriptive phrases shared by both stories, but parallels occur with...

...The Impact of the Affordable Care Act on North Carolina's Uninsured Population Wendy Patterson Walden University Policy & Advocacy for Population Health NURS 6050-13 Dr. Joan Moon June 30, 2015 The Impact of the Affordable Care Act on North Carolina's Uninsured Population In a speech delivered in the Rose Garden, President Obama stated, “Five years ago, after nearly a century of talk, decades of trying, a year of bipartisan debate -- we finally declared that in America, healthcare is not a privilege for a few, but a right for all” (US News, 2015). This paper will discuss the impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on the population of North Carolina, the economic impact of providing care to patients from the provider’s point of view, how patients will be affected in relationship to cost, quality, and access to treatment, and what the ethical implications of ACA means for both the provider's and the patients. The Impact of the Affordable Care Act on the Population in North Carolina According to a fact sheet published by the Kaiser Family Foundation, the ACA has the potential to extend coverage to many of the 47 million nonelderly uninsured people nationwide, including the 1.6 million uninsured in North Carolina (KFF, 2015). Although the ACA was signed into law declaring that it was a right for all to have health insurance, individual States had the option of whether to expand coverage for Medicaid recipients. “Being poor, unemployed, or homeless did not...

...Competitive Dynamics in Emirates Airlines Quest for Global Expansion Paul Mugendi MBA 604 Embry Riddle Aeronautical University May 2014 Executive Summary In an industry beset by unpredictable geo-political factors and cyclical crises, only one international carrier has consistently managed to increase revenue and report a profit for the last 25 years. This carrier is Emirates airline (Riva, 2013). Emirates has managed to achieve in less than three decades what giant and well established global carriers like British and Lufthansa managed in about five decades, and that is to serve all five continents without any alliances or partnerships. The objective of this term paper is to analyze some of the competitive dynamics that Emirates, legacy airlines and regional rivals have had to contend with and how Emirates has managed to come out on top especially in some business-hostile territories like North America and Europe. The history and origins of the Emirates airlines are highlighted as this paper outlines the business strategy that has propelled the carrier to international stardom. Also articulated from the research is the ambitious expansion that has European rivals worried and in some cases like Canada, the government stepping in to protect local carriers. The paper concludes by examining the viability of the carrier maintaining the growth and profitability curve and the expected rebound from regional carriers who seem to be currently languishing in losses as Emirates...

...It was originally titled He who Saw the Deep (Sha naqba īmuru) or Surpassing All Other Kings (Shūtur eli sharrī). The story revolves around a relationship between Gilgamesh (probably a real ruler in the late Early Dynastic II period ca. 27th century BC)[1] and his close companion, Enkidu. Enkidu is a wild man created by the gods as Gilgamesh's equal to distract him from oppressing the citizens of Uruk. Together they undertake dangerous quests that incur the displeasure of the gods. Firstly, they journey to the Cedar Mountain to defeat Humbaba, its monstrous guardian. Later they kill the Bull of Heaven that the goddess Ishtar has sent to punish Gilgamesh for spurning her advances. The latter part of the epic focuses on Gilgamesh's distressed reaction to Enkidu's death, which takes the form of a quest for immortality. Gilgamesh attempts to learn the secret of eternal life by undertaking a long and perilous journey to meet the immortal flood hero, Utnapishtim. Ultimately the poignant words addressed to Gilgamesh in the midst of his quest foreshadow the end result: "The life that you are seeking you will never find. When the gods created man they allotted to him death, but life they retained in their own keeping." Gilgamesh, however, was celebrated by posterity for his building achievements, and for bringing back long-lost cultic knowledge to Uruk as a result of his meeting with Utnapishtim. The story is widely read...

...Running head: CHILDREN LEARNING WITH ADHD 1 Children Learning with ADHD Selecia Watson CNDV 5312_C21_AP1-Group Counseling Theories Techniques Lamar University Children Learning with ADHD Children with ADHD are in need of a group that will help to improve their academic functioning. This group would be important for children with ADHD because those with ADHD have significant impairment in multiple domains of functioning. “The most problematic is academic impairments because children with ADHD will most likely be retained, placed in special education, and drop out of school than their peers. They often will forget to complete assignments, complete assignments but forget to turn in the assignment, and make careless mistakes in their work” (Langberg, Epstein, Urbanowicz, Simon, & Graham, 2008, p. 401). Also, children with ADHD will display off tasks, impulsive, and disruptive behaviors in the classroom (Langberg, Epstein, Urbanowicz, Simon, & Graham, 2008). Also, Raggi and Chronis (2006) state that academic difficulties for children with ADHD include failure to complete homework, poor comprehension of material, poor study skills, low test and quiz grades, poor preparation for class, disruptive behavior, peer conflict, and conflict with teachers. If ADHD is left untreated then this can seriously interfere with a child’s social interactions with peers and teachers, academic achievement, and overall school experience (Leslie, Lambros, Aarons...

Falling ill or experiencing an accident while travelling abroad requires foreign treatment, and, with medical expenses increasing worldwide, this can lead to costs much more difficult to cover than the actual holiday. Medical expenses increase immensely if there’s need for repatriation. Compared to the expenses of an accident in a foreign country, travel insurance is extremely cheap. As a general rule, buying from a travel agent usually means paying a lot more, not to mention the fact that travel agents are often not qualified or keen to discuss the details of the cover. The circumstances may not allow a detailed inspection of the policy...
