Conflict is an unavoidable part of life, and is seen in many shapes and form, such as global conflict, religious conflict, interpersonal conflict, cultural conflict and many others. However, the responses and consequences are largely dependent on the perspective, attitude and actions of all parties involved. All of these factors play a large role in whether the best or worst is brought out in people. While in the midst on conflict, ordinary individuals are able go above and beyond the conflict, bringing out their best qualities. Conflict has given them the perfect opportunity to shine, and allowing them to become an inspiration and role model to others. Malala Yousafzai was a advocate for education for girls, leading her to be targeted and shot by the Taliban. Malala survived, and bounced back stronger than ever. She now speaks on the importance of education. Malala stated “I don’t want revenge on the Taliban, I want education for sons and daughter of the Taliban.” Malala’s best personal traits where bought out, although she was already compassionate, kind and forgiving, she was able to take this a step further and share this with the rest of the world. Malala Yousafzai’s story proves that while in the midst of conflict, the best traits in people can be brought out. The best and worst in people can both be brought out, as conflict influences people to do things they wouldn’t do in their everyday lives. Conflict can’t often be controlled and it is bound to happen, however, the action taken is up to the individual. Oskar Groening, a Nazi stationed at Auschwitz concentration camp, was involved with the killing of Jews. The worst parts of Groening were brought out during his time at Auschwitz, he knew what he was doing and continued to do it. However, more than 40 years later, Groening opens up about his time at Auschwitz. He stated “I stand before the victims

Fitness for Every Day

...RUNNING HEAD: Fitness 1 Fitness 2 Muscular strength and endurance are very essential parts to the body’s ability to move. Muscular strength is the amount of force a person can put out or the amount of weight they can lift. Muscular endurance is how many times you can move that weight without getting exhausted. Through muscle training it can increase muscle mass and the cross-sectional area which is also known as hypertrophy. Aerobic training is nonstop exercising such as running, swimming, as we as circuit training. These exercises are designed to improve the effectiveness of the cardiorespiratory system to deliver oxygen to working muscles. Aerobic training involves the larger muscle groups to combine with the cardiorespiratory system to supply an innovative volume of oxygen to the working muscles to recover performance. Anaerobic training is high intensity and short amount of time of exercise. There are frequent rushes over short distances at high force and are designed to increase the two energy pathways as the major supply of energy and is aimed to rise acceptance to lactic acid. The tests that I used were the push up test and the YMCA half sit up test. For the push up test I gave myself enough room and I had my wife set a timer. I got down on the ground my hands apart as far as my shoulder width, and I had my toes on the ground. My back, hips, and arms were straight. I then went down and came back up and I repeated this. Every Good Boy

...Talent is often linked to success, and for some that is everything, especially when you grow up a part of getting it is by hard work. The other half is by talents, but how can you obtain success without talents? That is the question that is asked in “Every Good Boy” by David Nicholls. Here we follow a boy with absolutely no abilities at all, trying to find what he is particular good at. So when he gets the opportunity to get a free piano he will do anything to show his talents. The whole story is buildup of the narrator Michael’s flashbacks about his experiences with developing his talents. He constantly compares himself to his siblings which are incredible talented. His only accomplishment was to be “remarkable for being entirely without abilities" he can’t even obtain the nerdy/geeky role, because he is "graceless, charmless, physically and social inept". To make his parent proud, and get on the level of his siblings Michael decides to learn to play the piano. His mother despites this even though mothers are most known for being incredible supportive to their children, but it seems as he is that ungifted that not even she believes in his talents. Michael starts to get some professional instructions by Mrs. Chin, she takes the lack of Michaels progress and abilities as a personally defeat. “Mrs. Chin no longer bothered to correct my errors, sitting there instead with her eyes closed tight, taking the wrong notes as a boxer takes punches” And after playing an extremely horrible...

Every Good Boy -

...Being good at something is wonderful, because it shows that you are not useless and can succeed in life. But finding something you are good at is another talk. Every person is expected to be talented at one thing at least, but that is not always an easy task as you might think. Living up to expectations is difficult and unfortunate not to achieve them especially when they come from you parents, who are the ones you would like to disappoint the least. This is the aspect dealt with in the short story, “Every Good Boy”, which is about a young boy who struggles to find his talent in life. But when his father decides he should take piano lessons things end up having drastic consequences. In what follows I shall look closer at the title, main character, role of the piano, ending, theme and end with a conclusion. The title “Every Good Boy” indicates two things. Firstly, the relationship between our main character and his parents. The main character is expected by his parents to be this good, talented kid who he fails to be. Secondly, the incident at the end of the text which shows a bit of irony. Our main character is an innocent child who would not hurt a fly; however, the intense ending shows us otherwise. It is as if the title is telling us, “Come on, this would happen to every good child”. The narrator, our main character, is a nine-year-old boy. He sees himself as a conventional and pathologically obedient kid. He lives with his parents and has two siblings. Unlike his...

Tortoise and the Hare

...Tortoise and the Hare I remember hearing several little stories as a kid and I was having a hard time deciding which one to share. I decided to choose the “Tortoise and the Hare.” Once upon a time there was a hare that kept bragging about how fast he could run and that he was faster that everyone else, he also was harshly teasing the tortoise for how slow he was.  Then one day, the irritated tortoise answered back: “Who do you think you are? You sure are fast, but you can be beat!” The hare exclaimed with laughter. “Beaten in a race? By who you, I bet there’s nobody in the world that can win against me I’m so fast. Now, why don’t you try?” annoyed by all the bragging, the tortoise accepted the challenge. A course was planned, and the next day at dawn they stood at the starting line. The hare yawned as the tortoise headed off slowly. Once they began and the hare saw how slow the tortoise was, he decide to take a quick nap and disclaimed “take your time” ‘I’ll catch up to you in a minute.” The hare woke up with a start from his little nap, looking for the tortoise. But he was only a short distance away, having barely covered a third of the course. Breathing a sigh of relief, the hare decided he might as well have breakfast too, and off he went to eat some cabbages he had noticed in a nearby field. But the heavy meal and the hot sun made his eyelids droop. With a careless glance at the tortoise, now halfway along the course, he decided to have another nap before winning...

JIVRAJ-9881838482 ABSTRACT: “Every Watt is precious” Energy lies at the core of all economic activity & controls a country’s rate of growth and development; the type and volume of our energy usage determines our environment. In the case of the developing countries, like ours, the energy sector assumes a critical importance in the view of the ever increasing energy needs requiring huge investments to meet them. If India is to achieve the targeted growth in GDP, it would need commensurate input of energy, mainly commercial energy in the form of coal, oil, gas and electricity. However, India’s fossil fuel reserves are limited. Among the various strategies for meeting energy demand, efficient use of energy and its conservation emerges out to be the least cost option in any given strategies, apart from being environmentally benign. In our effort of writing this paper we hereby want to put forth the Scope for Energy Conservation both in Residential as well as in the Non Residential areas, ‘Energy Efficient Technologies’, their financial analysis & want to prove the fact that use of some of...

Every Day in America

...Every day in America, a teenager becomes addicted to the most preventable cause of death, Smoking tobacco. Some may do it just because it seems cool, or because they want to fit in. However, they are totally unaware of the dangers of smoking tobacco because of the poor safety warnings on the back of every deadly carton. According to U.S. Senate of Massachusetts Edward M. Kennedy,” Nationally, cigarettes kill well over four hundred thousand people each year.” I strongly suggest that tobacco shouldn’t be legal because it’s bad for one’s health, and it can be the most preventable cause of someone’s death. Tobacco is one of the most deadliest, yet legal drugs known to mankind. According to CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), “Smoking causes 443,000 deaths each year in the United States. 443,000. That’s more than the population of some small cities in America. Cigarettes take more lives than automobile accidents, alcohol abuse, illegal drugs, AIDS, murder, and suicide all combined. (Edward M. Kennedy). Tobacco contains nicotine which is one of the most addictive chemicals that exist. Nicotine is actually used to kill insects, and is more addictive than the illegal drug famously known as crack cocaine. But nicotine is just one of the many deadly chemicals in cigarettes. The deadly habit of smoking tobacco has actually existed for centuries. According to an article titled “Smoking” from 2010,” The dangers of tobacco were not always well...

Every Good Boy

...Every Good Boy While growing up, finding things you’re good at is a necessity. It strengthens your self-esteem and the ability to believe in yourself. The society expects us to find something we are good at, and use it in the society. Whether you are doing well in school or are good at an instrument. And an instrument is exactly what the main character in “Every Good Boy” (2011) by David Nicholls, wants to manage playing. Among all the bad experiences he has had, is this the one he can finally accomplish? Everything else he had tried to do hasn’t worked. The main character in this short story is also the narrator. He, whose name isn’t mentioned, tells about a particularly significant episode of his childhood. At the time of the event, the main character is nine years old. He lives with his parents and two siblings. His brother and sister have found their special talent and he is eager to find his own. He seems as a happy boy, even though he doesn’t seem to have particularly high hopes about his future. “At the age of nine I was remarkable for being entirely without ability. (...) Graceless, charmless, physically and socially inept, I lacked even the traditional intelligence of the nerdy” (p. 1, ll. 9-13). It seems like he has an idea of how a nine-year-old boy should be. He also claims that he is clumsy in every possible way and that he is totally incompetent. (p. 1, l. 12) To remove these thoughts he has gotten a new plan. His father and uncle just arrived at...

Every Good Boy

...Every good boy (B) The main concern for every child is to be good at something. Whether it is playing football, having the ability to draw or merely the best collection of Pokémon cards. This is very important, as all kids demand constant attention and an equal level of praise. Many children are born with imposing talent and an impelling need to show it. In this case, he has the latter. The story is written by David Nicholls and we follow the first-person narrator, a 9-year old boy living with his family. The story is based on events that occurred in chronological order in the past. Throughout the story he strives to improve his piano skills hoping someday to be acknowledged for his efforts. Due to his sibling’s achievements the pressure to excel is dominant. “…You are going to learn, aren’t you maestro” (s.9, l. 8) Especially the word maestro puts a lot of pressure on the boy and simultaneously strengthens his urge to succeed. Similar feelings are created with this “Everybody can do something.” (s.9, l. 14) compared with the first example this has the same message but is accompanied by an objective approach. The child became motivated and ready to succeed “Unperturbed, I set to devising soundscapes” (s.9, l.27) the word Unperturbed shows us that he started his preparation without hesitating with the idea. He was composed, untroubled and ready to become a prodigy. There are several themes in this text, but the main theme is the outgoing quest for personal skill. The boy feels...

Every Child Is Special

...There is a scene in Taare Zameen Par when the protagonist Ishaan (Darsheel Safary) runs away from school and loiters on the road for the whole day – for the fear of being punished for not having done his homework. I never did anything like that in school but keep doing it regularly once I started work. The comparison might not be warranted but this is just one of those scenes which made me relate to Ishaan’s plight in the movie. On paper, this is the story of a kid suffering from dyslexia and how with the help of an understanding teacher he overcomes it against all odds. But honestly (and more importantly) this is an open indictment of our education system and parents…and their frenzy to produce “winners”. There have been films in the past like Bommarillu and Good Will Hunting which have tackled the issue of an individual’s own inclinations coming in conflict the rest-of-the-world’s perception of what is best for them. Taare is probably more timely and significant because it deals with a phase of life where one is hardly aware of a thing called “choice”/”interest”/”inclination” and so is very likely to shrivel and retreat into a shell (too young to understand that he/she is just different but not wrong)….when figures of authority simply pronounce judgements rather than trying to understand the problem an individual is facing. The incidents involving the teacher-student interactions depicted in this movie are so relevant in today’s times when you get to see and hear on television...

Every Encounter Matters

...A fascinating and powerful narrative, “Recitatif” by Toni Morrison, tells the story of two girls, Twyla and Roberta, who share quite a complicated relationship. From the time they meet at St. Bonaventure, an orphanage, at the tender age of eight to when they become adults and start leading lives of their own, they are plagued by their racial, social, and economical differences. One of the most interesting aspects of the short story is the symbolism of Maggie, a disabled woman who works at the orphanage, and the tremendous impact she has on Twyla and Roberta. Numerous critics have analyzed the portrayal of Maggie in the story, and have come to some varied conclusions. In my opinion, as Twyla and Roberta are reunited with one another through the course of their lives, they slowly begin to see and accept that Maggie is a reflection of their mothers, and – to a larger extent – also themselves. The issues explored in “Recitatif” resonate with many readers on many different levels and, in effect, much has been written and discussed about it. This is largely due to the fact that Morrison has left a lot open to the reader for interpretation. “Revised Memories and Colliding Identities: Absence and Presence in Morrison’s ‘Recitatif’ and Viramontes’s ‘Tears on My Pillow’” by Helane Adams Androne is a very focused critical piece that argues that both central characters have suffer from strained relationships. "Transfiguring Aesthetics: Conflation, Identity Denial, and Transference in “Passing...
