During one of the sessions they read “A Good Man Is Hard To Find.” He told them to define sympathy, empathy, and compassion. The prisoner's hand swing up in the air to define sympathy. One prisoner defines sympathy as “When your homies mom dies and you go up to him and say spensa sorry to hear about your moms” (62). Another defines empathy as “when your homies mom dies and you say spensa about your moms sabes que (do you know what) my moms died six months ago I feel you dog” (62). The last word to define was compassion, but it seemed that none of the prisoners wanted to volunteer to define the word. Then an older man begins to speak he says “God is compassion” (62). What he means is god is compassion because he is kind, forgiving, and loving. God gives compassion to those in their weakest and strangest moments.
