In an evidence-based practice (EBP), there are five steps to approach: ask, acquire, appraise, apply and access. In this assessment, I find that the search strategy part can very challenge which are the step 1 and 2 in EBP. I said this part is challenging is not because it is difficult to understand or I don’t know how to use the database. It is because really a time-consuming part. There are a lot of articles in the database, and I need to find out which are relevant to my question. From the assessment, I learned it is important to break up the practice-related question in PICO form. The practice-related question should be neither too broad nor too detailed because if the question is very broad, the search output can reach hundreds or thousands

Marjorie Templeton Using Evidence Based Practice: A Case Study

...Using Evidence Based Practice Procedures, protocols and guidelines evolve as new research shows for more efficient practice. Nurses must stay competently with these changes as evidence-based practice offers patients the best quality care, avoidance of adverse effects and variances (White, Dudley-Brown & Terhaar, 2016). Performing care that is poor evidence based can put the patient at risk of their safety and quality of care (Clarke & Donaldson, 2008). Prevention, Assessment, management and communication with the patient are the appropriate interventions when handling a patient with a risk of developing pressure injuries. Marjorie Templeton was admitted to the emergency department with an infected foot ulcer by her general practitioner. According to the patient notes Templeton has insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, also known as type 1 diabetes or autoimmune diabetes (Katsarou et al., 2017). Core Competency 3: Applying Critical Thinking In Practice

...Core competency three consists of applying critical thinking in practice. To demonstrate how I mastered this competency I will be connecting practice behaviors to specific artifacts. The first practice behavior is differentially selecting and implementing strategies for assessment and intervention utilizing evidence based practice and best practice methods. This will be illustrated through a tobacco training I attended while in my internship. The artifact will consist of a PowerPoint that was distributed during the training. The second practice behavior is producing practice-ready presentations and documents that could include case presentations, journal articles, grant applications, legislative brief/summary(ies). This practice behavior relates...

Randomised controlled trail: a clinical trail where participants are randomly assigned to groups in order to receive different interventions. This randomization removes many of the effects that may bias the true result. Systematic review: a comprehensive identification and synthesis of the available literature on a specified topic. Clinical practice guidelines: systematically developed statements that assist the health professional and the patient to make decisions about what is the appropriate health care in specific circumstances. Both purposes are important since group therapy is one of the main ways to help intervene with inpatient psychiatric patients. Group therapy has been proven to be very effective but it is also important to take into consideration the patients culture just like you would when you are taking care of a patient in the ICU. Evidence Based Practice Examples

...Evidence-based practice centers are the outcome of an initiative of the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) in 1997 to promote practice based on evidence. The EPCs develop evidence reports as well as assessments on the topics, which are relevant to clinical and other health care organizations. There is a special emphasis on the common as well as expensive problems that the medical fraternity faces. A very good example of a successful EPC would be the one at John Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice Center. It has provided some pioneering research work on Type 2 diabetes in adults. Their research on this includes an in-depth analysis and study of an oral medication for adults having type 2 diabetes. It has also come up with a study...

...Children and adolescents generally receive the greatest proportion of their treatment through school- based educational programs. The reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 2001( commonly referred to as No Child left Behind) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 have introduced both educators and parents to the term evidence- based practices. The purpose of introducing evidence- based practices emanates from the need for educators to identify treatments that have been clearly defined and tested and that yield clear results about the effectiveness of the treatments. The legislative requirement for evidence has spawned two major responses from researchers in special education. First,...

Part A The article being analysed is: Tobiano, G., Chaboyer, W. & Murray, A. (2012). Family Members’ Perceptions of the Nursing Bedside Handover. Journal of Clinical Nursing, 22, 192-200. The analysis of the primary research report is done in the form of a graph (figure 1). Each of the four analysis areas is rated within a scale of 1-10; 1 denotes extremely weak while 10 denotes very strong. Barriers to Using Evidence Based Medicin

...Barriers to Using Evidence-Based Medicine Melanie Ossman Granite State College Professor Philip Wyzik HLTC 600 March 4, 2011 Thesis The Institute of Medicine recommends the use of evidence-based medicine as a primary tool for achieving the aims outlined by their six themes of improvement. Specifically, EBM relates to their aim to make health care more effective: “to provide health care that is effective and efficient.” (Institute of Medicine, 2001) In recent years, evidence-based medicine has gained increasingly broad-based support in health care, but many doctors still aren’t using it. With a lean towards Pharmacy management, I researched the barriers providers and institutions are faced with in successfully incorporating evidence-based medicine and how initiating organizational improvements can help. The research highlights some important considerations to be aware of that gives evidence-based medicine a bad name, the pitfalls to avoid, and some ways providers and institutions are working to overcome them. Introduction This paper begins by giving an overview of evidence-based medicine, what it is, and the benefits to be realized by providers, insurers, and patients. I compared that to what providers were using before EBM. Next, I examine the barriers to successfully incorporating evidence-based medicine, and the negative perceptions that dissuade their use by clinicians. Identified are the disadvantages such as source information bias, ethics considerations...

Translational Research for Practice and Population

...A. Identify a current nursing practice within your healthcare setting that requires change. DEVELOPING OR CREATING AN INDEX TO MINIMIZE RISKS OFPRESSURE SORE 1. Describe the current nursing practice. An instrument specifically designed to aid health care workers evaluate the dangers of pressure sores that a patient faces is called the Braden Scale. After assessment, the victim is categorized depending on six aspects: capability of physical activity, hydration and nutrition status, capacity to alter position, the ability to respond after sensing discomfort related to pressure, shearing or exposure of the skin to friction during locomotion, and skin exposure to moisture. If the overall score is lower it means the risk of pressure sore is higher (Changing Practice, Changing Lives: 10 Landmark Nursing Research Studies, n.d). Prior to this Change, Skin assessment was based on non- formalized risk assessment which varies with each clinical practice. 2. Discuss why the current nursing practice needs to be changed Using non-formalized risk assessment in Predicting pressure ulcer resulted in non-uniformity and personal clinical judgement which varies from one person to another. Using Clinical judgement is more effective where the staffs are experienced and their experience assist in appropriate predictability, but with novice staff, the use of clinical judgment is inappropriate. In a multisite trial, Braden scale was tested by clinics bringing together skilled nursing facilities...

Following this assignment, it is demonstrated how the process of evidence-based practice can be utilized in the case of Mr. Banks to provide viable solutions to challenges faced as a result of depression and type 2 diabetes.
