Having embarked on the BSN and being educated in nursing research have empowered me as a nurse and also made me more aware than ever before of the importance of being knowledgeable on research. According to Schaefer 2013, nursing research has been a life-changing experience as it allows one to gain new knowledge. Nursing research has allowed me to see the importance of evidence-based practice and how it validates nursing interventions. The new knowledge gained had enhanced my ability to analyze and critique a research article, a task which always appeared difficult for me before I came to understand the existence and the importance of nursing research.
Prior to doing nursing research, I had always thought that research is boring and only

Evidence Based Research In Nursing

...When I hear the word research, my initial thought is someone or a group of people putting in endless amount of time into a matter of concern to either find an answer or to come to a conclusion about a topic. My initial thought about research tends to hold a more negative aspect, because personally, I find it hard to decipher whether or not I have enough reliable data to reach a conclusion. Evidence based research is what has built the nursing profession. Through evidence based research, we can find ways to keep patients and staff safer and produce more efficient policies and procedures. I have used evidence based research in my nursing career way more than I initially realized. From reading chapter one in Nursing Research: Methods and Critical Appraisal for Evidence-Based Practice, I realized that how I prioritize my work flow and go about certain tasks is based off of evidence based research. A specific area that I have used evidence based practice is preventing falls. It was found that most falls occur because individuals were either trying to or coming from the restroom unassisted. In our policy and procedures it used to state that staff should assist patients to the restroom every two hours. When the fall’s committee started to see a trend of falls around meal times, policy was able to be changed to help reduce that...

Nursing Research And Evidence-Based Practice

...Nursing research and Evidence-based practice Nursing research is the persistent and orderly analysis process to improve current understanding to come up with new and practical understanding. Researchers are persistent in their analysis process since the ultimate goal is to produce understanding (Grove, Burns, and Gray, 2015). According to Grove, Burns and Gray (2015), in nursing research, experts improve actual research studies or knowledge systems to gather facts that are relevant to nursing including knowledge of nursing administration and cost management. Finally, nursing research must be done in order to build an evidence base practice for nursing (Grove, Burns and Gray 2015). Evidence-based practice is the problem-solving approach in...

Evidence Based Practice in Nursing

...Title: Evidence Based Practice in Nursing Name Course Tutor April 20th, 2013 Introduction The paper herein provides a critical discussion of evidence based practice (EBP) in nursing. It clearly elaborates on the meaning and definition of EBP as used by nurses as well as the importance of evidence based decision making as it relates to nursing care. It broadly examines the concept of EBP in nursing care and its relevance to nursing practice and to the delivery of quality patient care. Subsequently, the essay will also expound on the broad research methods that are used in evidence based nursing and conclusively show how this evidence can be applied in day to day health care practice. The Definition and Importance of EBP Evidence based practice in nursing has wide and varied definitions among the nurses in practice and in academic centres. However, the most generally accepted definition is the integration of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values (Sacket et al., 2000). Van, Schoonhoven & Grol (2008 at p. 382) while citing Sacket et al., (2000), define evidence based nursing as the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence available in making decisions that are pertinent to the care of individual patients. It is the optimal use of the available research evidence in nursing (Van, Schoonhoven & Grol, 2008). In other literature, evidence based practice (EBP), in nursing has been defined to mean the...

Evidence Based Practice

...EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE BENCY GNANASIGHAMANI AMERICAN SENTINEL UNIVERSITY Introduction Medical and health care is one of the most dynamic human disciplines, and large amounts of money are spent annually on high-quality and sophisticated research, resulting in an exponential growth in health care literature. Regularly, new and more effective medicines, medical devices, and procedures are invented. One major objective behind all these efforts is to help doctors, nurses, and medical technicians provide the best possible care and treatment to patients. In addition to using traditional and well-established procedures and practices, health care practitioners are adopting innovative interventions that are based on best practices as well as solid research-based evidence. Evidence-based practice is one such technique and is quickly gaining popularity due to its potential to effectively handle clinical issues and provide better patient care (ANA 2003). Implementation of Evidence Based Practice places additional demands on nurses to apply credible evidence to individual client situations through searching related evidence, using clinical judgments, and considering client values and system resources. To effectively apply the Evidence Based Practice process, in addition to the basic skills required to undertake nursing work, a nurse must have the ability to: identify knowledge gaps, formulate relevant questions, conduct an efficient...

Evidence Based Practice in Nursing

...Evidence Based Practices Abstract Quality nursing and outcomes have a strong correlation with evidence based practices, a model that guides patient provider decision making and health care. Evidence based practices uses contentious and judicious use of current best evidence in decision making about the care of individual patients. Strong nursing and organizational leadership is needed to invest in nurses ability and the resources to facilitate evidence based practices. With business principles applied to quality health care the return on investment can increase revenues, saving costs, increases patient safety, and achieves the highest quality care. Keywords: clinical decision making, patient safety, best health care outcomes Evidence Based Practices in Nursing Evidence based practices occurs in many disciplines but most recently it has occurred in the discipline of nursing. Evidence based practices helps to identify and recognize the best health outcomes for patients and their families obtained through clinical expertise and best scientific evidences. Health care professionals are constantly asking questions in regards to health care practices in regards to how and why practices are being performed the way they are. Health care professionals want to know if the way they are caring for a patient is the best way or is there another method that is more effective. In a dynamic health care setting these questions are being asked to ensure quality care and safety for patients...

Evidence Based Practice

...Implementation of Evidence-Based Practice Sheila Wright Submitted to Sharon Mooney, RN, MSN in partial fulfillment of NR 460R Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing Regis University April 9, 2010 Implementation of Evidence-Based Practice Throughout history, nursing practice has experienced change. Florence Nightingale initiated the greatest change in nursing in the mid-1800’s when she gathered data regarding the morbidity and mortality of soldiers (Chitty & Black, 2007). Nightingale recognized there was a need for change to improve patient outcomes. Her determination to provide the best possible care, based on the evidence she gathered, has inspired a profession. Today, the process of using research to care for patients is referred to as evidence-based practice. The purpose of this paper is to define and explain the importance of evidence-based practice, discuss qualitative and quantitative research studies which affect medical-surgical areas, and barriers preventing research utilization and how they may be overcome. Definition of Evidence-Based Practice There are numerous definitions of evidence-based practice (EBP). EBP is defined by Boswell and Cannon (2007) as, “A research-based, decision-making process used to guide the delivery of holistic patient care by nurses” (p. 340). Cope (as cited in Chitty & Black, 2007), defines EBP as “using the best available research findings to make clinical decisions that are most effective and beneficial for patients”...

Evidence

...HPNA Position Statement Evidence-Based Practice Background Increased attention is being directed toward the development of methods that can provide valid and reliable information about what works best in healthcare. The careful scientific evaluation of clinical practice became a prominent focus during the second half of the 20th century.1 More recently, attention has been paid to methods of determining which of multiple proven approaches to a healthcare problem works best for which patients.2 Evidence-based practice encompasses implementing the best-known practices into the clinical setting using a scientific approach. It evolved from evidence-based medicine, which was developed in Canada to teach medical students. “Evidence-based medicine has been defined as the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients.”3, p. 3 The National Quality Forum’s report A National Framework and Preferred Practices for Palliative and Hospice Care Quality is a consensus report that is a first step toward introducing evidence-based measures into palliative practice on a formal, national level.4 The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) supports organizations in their efforts to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare by facilitating the use of evidence-based research findings in clinical practice.5 The nursing discipline has also embraced evidence-based practice over the past 25 years, initially through...

Nursing Research

...Nursing Research Nursing is often incorrectly regarded as a subset of the medical profession; in reality, the profession of Nursing is a unique, distinct science with its own knowledge base and skillset. In accordance with the requirements of a scientific profession, there is a need for scholarly inquiry and nursing research in order to maintain autonomy and distinction of the Nursing perspective separate from other disciplines. An editorial published in the Journal of Nursing Scholarship noted that “the distinguishing feature of a profession is how its practitioners use knowledge to make a difference” (Hegyvary, 2007). The evidence generated by Nursing scholars influences global health initiatives and policy worldwide. The need for field wide scholarly inquiry, the application of rigorous scientific standards to research, and the importance of stringent ethical and legal protection for research subjects has been the subject of numerous articles, books, and papers. The Nursing Profession has a responsibility to engage in scholarly research for many reasons that will be discussed in depth within this paper. Importance of Nursing Research to the Nursing Profession As noted in the introduction, in order to maintain its status as a unique, autonomous profession, Nursing as a field must continually refine and expand its scientific knowledge base. The AACN position statement summarizes the importance of research to the profession by stating “The essence of a discipline is...

Evidence Based Practice in Nursing

...Evidence-Based Practices in Nursing Evidence-based practice can be defined as any research done whose findings enhance the ability to make better decisions regarding health care. (effective healthcare) There have been countless studies done on a multitude of topics. All of this research has led to more effective treatment and better outcomes for patients. An example of an evidence-based project performed in 2014 is one on catheter associated urinary tract infections.(Clagg) This is an immense problem in hospital and nursing home settings. There are many ways we can examine this study to see how the nurses involved with these particular patients can decrease the risk of these infections. Patients admitted in the hospital are much easier to do this type of evidence based research on due to availability of data. In the hospital, the nurse can monitor the patient’s intake and output, the color of the patient’s urine, and whether or not it has any odor or sediment.(Clagg) This research may also be done in a nursing home setting with twenty-four hour nursing care. This type of research would be difficult in the patient who was at home with a Foley catheter without having a home health nurse multiple times per day. The steps of the nursing process closely relate to evidence-based practice. This is because the nursing process is designed to deliver complete care. The nurse taking care of the patient must evaluate the patient’s needs based on subjective and objective data, develop...

Nursing Vision for the Future

...Nursing, as a profession, continues to be a growing and changing entity. As nurses, we must consider that our future is going to be much different than our past. This presentation will review four major topics that are worth consideration, and hopefully provide food for thought about each nurse’s plans and goals for his or her own career in the future. We will discuss evidence-based practice, nursing theory, research, and nursing roles and opportunities. Each of these topics includes a myriad of ideas, publications, and opportunities for self assessment and growth. Evidence-based nursing, evidenced-based practice, and evidence-based medicine are all based on the idea that health care treatment has transitioned from “practice that was based on intuition, experience, clinical skills and guesswork” to practice based in science (Chitty, 2010, p. 258). This has allowed nurses to make decisions based on research, and to provide the most skilled, advanced, and expert care. Nurses should know where to find research to support evidence-based care decisions. According to Ciliska, Haynes, and Marks (2013), a nurse could review textbooks, online data bases, journal articles, and the internet. One should consider that both consolidated and distilled information resources are available, and remember that distilled information resources do not always provide the most accurate and up to date information. The consolidate resources can be plentiful and one may have some difficulty choosing...
