Examining the Application Business Ethics and Laws in the Tobacco Industry

Abstract “Ethics is not something exterior to the economy…rather, ethics is and interior principle of the economy itself, which cannot function if it does not take account of the human values of solidarity and reciprocal responsibility.” (Pope Benedict XVI) I agree with Pope Benedict. Ethics deals with values that relate to the nature of human conduct and values associated with that conduct. In today’s business environment it is critical to understand the relationship between ethics and business law as ethical behavior and corporate responsibility are more important than ever. It has been argued that good ethics within an organization equate to good business, although good ethics are not required to be successful in business. This examination will put a spotlight on the role of ethics in the business environment, with a particular look at the application of ethics in the tobacco industry.

“Business transactions are completed through a combination on values of the parties and the laws that reflect those values and the importance of ones word in business.” (Twomey & Jennings, 2014, p. 33) Business ethics examine an organizations ethical principles and potential moral and ethical dilemmas. In a general sense, business ethics is the application of moral and ethical norms to the business sector. The main objective of ethics in the workplace is balance the goals of profits with the values of individuals and society. Ethical training within organizations supports business owners in establishing and maintaining an effective workplace.

There are two main views on whether ethics in business is more tolerant than societal and/or personal ethics.

In the UK, Inflation is measured by the variation in the Consumer price index (CPI). It’s a measure used to estimate the price change in a basket of goods/services consumed. Each month, around 12,000 prices of more than 600 goods/services are taken around the UK and from all different types of business (including online businesses) which sell the products to consumers. An average price for that month is worked out and then converted. The month’s statistics can then be compared to last month’s average price to calculate the percentage rise in prices over the period. Inflation can impact on businesses in the UK, because if inflation is high, businesses won’t be aware of what the prices will be in a couple of months’ time, let alone a couple of years. However, decisions have to be made which will affect the business in the long-term as it is creating uncertainty. Also if prices rise, consumers will be less willing to borrow money because of not knowing what will happen in the future. Value of savings will fall as inflation erodes consumer’s real value so they will have to save more to make up savings for their previous real value.
