...In SOWK 301 and 302, I learned the value of giving clients the opportunity to provide input concerning their treatment goals and what they hope to gain from therapy. We watched several videos in which this was demonstrated. One question asked in several of these videos by the clinician to the client was “How can I best help you?”. This question gives the client a chance to tell the clinician their goals. Next, the clinician can tailor treatment to these goals. This is one of the questions I most often ask clients at my field placement, and then together we work to accomplish these common goals during group sessions. I had the chance to practice this skill during my internship. One of the curriculum points I developed was a worksheet for clients to fill out. This sheet outlined, in simple terms, what clients hoped to gain from therapy/what their goals were, how they planned to achieve said goals, and how to get around any barriers. This was a fill-in-the-blank worksheet, which gave clients the...

...News can manipulate and be manipulated. Governments and corporations may attempt to manipulate news media; governments, for example, by censorship, and corporations by share ownership. The methods of manipulation are subtle and many. Manipulation may be voluntary or involuntary. Those being manipulated may not be aware of this. See: news propaganda. Photographers crowd around a starlet at the Cannes Film Festival. * Truth. Truth may conflict with many other values. * Public interest. Revelation of military secrets and other sensitive government information may be contrary to thepublic interest, even if it is true. However, public interest is not a term which is easy to define. * Privacy. Salacious details of the lives of public figures is a central content element in many media. Publication is not necessarily justified simply because the information is true. Privacy is also a right, and one which conflicts with free speech. See: paparazzi. * Fantasy. Fantasy is an element of entertainment, which is a legitimate goal of media content. Journalism may mix fantasy and truth, with resulting ethical dilemmas. See: National Enquirer, Jayson Blair scandal, Adnan Hajj photographs controversy. * Taste. Photo journalists who cover war and disasters confront situations which may shock the sensitivities of their audiences. For example, human remains are rarely screened. The ethical issue is how far should one risk shocking an audience's sensitivities in...

...In order to better address any issues that a client may come with, it is important that the social worker is knowledgeable and competent in diversity. My field placement relates to competency engaging in diversity and difference when working with both the residents and staff members. There is a culture difference between the staff and residents. In my field placement, it could be difficult for some residents to understand that people from other cultures and religion communicate differently depending on where they come from. Even though a Catholic Nun established St. Cabrini of Westchester, everyone is welcomed for treatment and services also, everyone is treated with respect and dignity no matter which religion they are...

...shaped by your assumptions and preconceived ideas; in doing so, you can appreciate the ideas of others, notice how their assumptions and preconceived ideas may have shaped their thoughts, and perhaps recognize how your ideas support or oppose what you read. Types of Reflection Experiential Reflection: Popular in professional programs, like business, nursing, forensics and education, reflection is an important part of making connections between theory and practice. When you are asked to reflect upon experience in a placement, you do not only describe your experience, but you evaluate it based on ideas from class. You can assess a theory or approach based on your observations and practice and evaluate your own knowledge and skills within your professional field. This opportunity to take the time to think about your choices, your actions, your successes and your failures is best done within a specific framework, like course themes or work placement objectives. Abstract concepts can become concrete and real to you when considered within your own experiences, and reflection on your experiences allows you to make plans for improvement. Reading Reflection: To encourage thoughtful and...

...Marketplace Done and Mulvey (2011 p.31) state that the labour market can be subdivided into sectors, making it easier to focus on. These sectors can be defined by ‘occupational grouping, geographical territory or by shared characteristics in the workplace, for example, graduates.’ Defining sectors is a way of being able to examine the labour market in more detail, and helpful in getting a hold of relevant information. The graduate labour market is a distinct sector within the labour market which simply means ‘the demand is for graduate level jobs, for which the jobseeker must have an undergraduate degree.’ According to Done and Mulvey (2011 p.5) ‘The basic principle of the graduate labour market is that two equally important elements must be in place for the market to work, namely: supply and demand.’ The market place for graduate employment is vast, and there are a number of different opportunities in all disciplines available for students who have just finished university and are seeking graduate employment. There are various websites and publications that are specifically targeted towards graduates by only advertising vacancies from companies who are offering graduate positions. Websites such as Rate My Placement are a good online source to use as they list the top 75 employees for graduate opportunities. The Times (2013) also list the top 100 graduate employers which are updated on a yearly. However, according to The Independent (2011) the number of graduates applying...

...For example, the teacher could show the students a video pertaining to the content of the lesson. This would appeal to the auditory and visual learners within the classroom. Furthermore, once the students attention is gained, then the student will be more likely to listen throughout the entirety of the lesson because they are now interested. Additionally, I would also incorporate more manipulatives during the lessons. This would have been especially when teaching the lesson I observed over elapsed time. For example, the teacher could have supplied students with yarn to use a representation of the time passed, paper plates to write the beginning time and end time, this would help the students understand how to create a life size an elapsed...

...any of the rules myself. I can use positive reinforcement when students are doing what they are suppose to be doing in order to encourage them to continue the good work. By using this positive reinforcement, I have found in my field placement and when I work with middle school students, that other students want to be involved and get praised as well. So, students who may be acting out might see that the students doing their work as instructed are getting acknowledged and they, usually, will want the same, positive attention and will complete their tasks as asked. I am a strong believer in the use of positive reinforcement, and, through seeing it at my field placements and by directly working with students in other activities, it is significantly more effective than any punishment. By using positive reinforcement, getting to know each of my students, and acting instead of reacting, I will be taking a large step in the right direction when it comes to having efficient classroom...

...The Process of Clinical Assessment helps the provider understand how problems persist and how they can be modified. It also helps the provider understand the nature of the problems, symptoms, complaints or dilemmas presented in the patient population (Messer & Gurman, ). The process of clinical assessment is especially useful for my field placement because I conduct assessments, diagnose patients, and determine potential levels of care while providing one-on-one therapy. The unique element is that my placement is located at a correctional facility. Patients are often not compliant with treatment in the community and incarceration is often their first contact with mental health providers. Patients with documented histories often have an...

...The changing temporary work force: Managerial, professional, and technical workers in the personnel supply services industry by Rick Melchionno “ orking smarter” has become the slogan of the ’90s for cost-conscious companies. One way many businesses have embraced the phrase is by using temporary workers—and not just for clerical tasks. Temporary workers are in positions previously filled by permanent employees, such as managers or scientists, and many have skills that did not exist even a few years ago. Demand for temporary workers in managerial, professional, and technical occupations is greatest in industries such as financial services, health care, telecommunications, and information technology. © Photos courtesy of Olsten Corporation (background and top left) W Although highly skilled temporary workers are common today, they were not always the norm. The first “temps” received little or no training to help businesses with short-term clerical projects such as collating and inventory control. The next wave of temporary workers required a few more skills to perform secretarial and administrative duties—including typing, filing, and answering phones—to fill in for absent staff members. The image of temporary workers doing repetitive, low-skilled tasks has grown as outdated as black and white television. Higher skilled workers, ranging from laboratory technicians to lawyers, increasingly make themselves available for temporary assignments. Companies recognize the...

...Looking at the sample size and population, the researchers used a large sampling size from males in nursing. To obtain the responses needed, researchers used surveys to get an understanding of when, where, and type of discrimination those males were exposed to. With the study setting, it focused on males who were in nursing school along with males who are currently working as nurses in the medical field. Regarding the sampling method, the researchers used a non-probable sampling, this is due to the number of male nurses and students in society today. The population size for this study is not large enough to use a probability sample. I believe the researchers used an inter-rater reliability tool as well as sampling validity as a measuring tool in their study. With inter-rater reliability “... [it measures the] reliability used to assess the degree to which different judges or raters agree in their decisions” (Phelan & Wren, n.d.). Since the males were given the ability to choose their responses, the researchers could assess their decisions and determine the percentage of how many answered with a specific choice. As for sampling validity “… [it] ensures that the measure covers the broad range of areas within the concept under study” (Phelan & Wren, n.d.). By covering both the males in nursing school and who work in the hospital, the researchers can...

Moreover, having a clear view of the working conditions, the future prospects, and the potential opportunities provided in this area is fundamental to make a final decision (Brady et al. 117-121). One must also take into consideration the personality traits of a successful dietitian and their impact on one's future in this career . The most important step of pursuing a career is to comprehend where to start and how to begin the journey. For those interested in Nutrition and Dietetics, it is challenging to realize the demands of careers in this field. (McConkey 356-360). To be a nutritionist or dietitian requires a bachelor's or master's degree in Nutrition or Dietetics or any program related to this field such as foods and nutritional sciences, human nutrition, etc ("Education.").
