“Well, if I ever meet a sea turtle I'll ask him, right after I'm done talking to the shark,” little did Marlin the Clownfish know that his whole world would turn upside down and inevitably he would speak to both a sea turtle and a shark on his adventure. Marlin was a normal clown fish that lived in the ordinary world but that changed after an adventure arose. Heroes do not often realize that they have particular traits within themselves that become present in the presence of an adventure or heroic deeds. In Andrew Stanton’s Finding Nemo, Marlin the clownfish lived in an ordinary life until everything changed and his son Nemo was taken. At the start of this movie, Marlin’s call to adventure begins with the barracuda attacking the fish eggs and Marlin’s wife Coral. This starts the turn of events because Nemo is given a sheltered lifestyle because Marlin does not want to lose his only child. This is followed up by Nemo swimming past the Drop Off to touch the butt of the boat in which he is inevitably taken by a diver. This occurs solely because Marlin has sheltered Nemo so he must rebel and thus the call to adventure is completed its cycle. According to Joseph Campbell, the call to adventure is the “point in a person’s life when s/he is first given notice that everything is going to change, whether they know it or not.” Campbell explains here that a hero undergoes this call when a change occurs and it sparks an adventure.
