There is a stigma about people diagnosed with depression in today’s society. My team wanted to combat this stigma by creating educational posters that give alternative words and phrases to use instead of ableist slurs. Ableist terms, such as crazy or retarded, to describe a person is disrespectful and basically says that mental disorders are a bad thing and is to be shamed for. Our plan is going to benefit the student body by raising awareness about mental illnesses. Along with that, we will attach a tiny slip of paper to each poster explaining why those slurs are derogatory and why we should avoid saying them as adjectives.
