In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, an african american man is falsely accused of rape, later in jail he is murdered. Mayella Ewell is responsible for Tom Robinson’s death whether on accident, or on purpose in many ways. Mayella is lying in court, if she told the truth then Tom Robinson wouldn’t be dead. In the novel it states, “No, I didn’t recollect if he hit me, I mean yes I do, he hit me,” (Lee, 248). Mayella is lying about Tom hitting her, she clearly forgot to lie in the sentence above. Firstly, in the novel it states, “Mr. Finch, I got down offa that chair an’ turned around an’ she sorta jumped on me.” (Lee,278?).
Secondly, in the novel it also states, “She says, ‘Kiss me back N*****.’ I say Miss Mayella lemme outa here an’ tried to run but she got her back to the door an’ I’da had to push her.” (Lee, 279?). Finally, as you can see, Mayella came onto Tom Robinson in the first place, so if she hadn’t of came onto him he would still be alive.

In the novel, some people might say that it was Bob Ewell who was directly responsible for Tom Robinson’s death. People might say that because Bob Ewell called upon a court trial. Firstly in the book it states, “‘Did you call a doctor Sheriff? Did anybody call a doctor?’” (Lee, 224). This shows how Bob Ewell knew Tom didn’t rape Mayella, but he seen the chance to remove the african americans from ‘his’ dump. Many people mainly believe that it was Mayella who came onto Tom Robinson, and that is why he is dead. In the text, Mayella grabbed onto Tom and started kissing Tom’s body.
