The Unseen Mockingbird
Actions seen as normal by one may seem obscene or even radical to others. That’s because
“normal is only the prejudices and reality you have taken in as a child” – Albert Einstein. In Harper Lees
To Kill A Mockingbird there are many characters with odd personalities and are seen as bad people that are killing mockingbirds, when in fact they are the mockingbird that no one sees. Bob Ewell is unfairly judged by the characters in the book as well as the readers of the book. Bob Ewell is an unseen mockingbird. As a child Bob Ewell was more than likely was beaten and abused by his parents; and this reality was passed down to him because that reality was passed down to him. In the year 2012 racism is seen as a horrible thing by most. In the 1930’s racism was seen as normal, and expected. To readers in 2012 that seems horrible, but to those in the 1930’s it was completely normal.

Throughout the book Bob Ewell is implied as being a bad person without us knowing the reasons why. A good man once said “You really never know a person until you climb onto his skin and walk around it.” (Lee 39) When Atticus said this to scout he was trying to say that you need to know everything about someone before you know and judge them. Now what does Harper lee let us know about Mr. Ewell? That he has a daughter? That he’s a drunk? That he is a single father trying to raise eight kids on his own because his wife is dead? Let’s face it; we don’t know the slightest bit about bob
Ewell. Has it ever crossed anyone’s mind that maybe Bob Ewell drinks so much get away from the stress from supporting his eight children alone? That he may have wanted the best for his children but just couldn’t give it to them? Maybe no one knows much about Bob Ewell, and until we do, no one has the right to judge

Whether it was assuming someone took your pencil when it is actually in behind you ear, or assuming which character is the killer in our favorite movie, we all have misjudgements all the time in our lives. When was the last time you have mistaken a situation? The theme of false judgement demonstrated in the play “Othello” by Shakespeare, the short story “The Invisible Wound” by Karoly Kisfaludi, and the film “To Kill a Mockingbird”. In these three storylines, the author exhibits the theme of false judgment through a character of innocence that is poorly misjudged and ends tragically for them. Othello accuses his wife, Desdemona of adultery, while the unnamed protagonist in “The Invisible Wound” also inaccurately assumes his wife is cheating. In “To Kill a Mockingbird”, the jury accuses Tom Robinson of a crime that he did not commit all because of the colour of his skin.
