...everyday life. The novel fits the situation because many people in high school deal with bullying and athletes struggle with competitiveness with other players. For example, one of the main conflicts for T.J. and his teammates is trying to earn the lettermen jacket and that is a typical conflict for many high school athletes aswell. Setting and Mood The story takes place in Cutter High School, Spokane, Washington and All Night Fitness Gym where T.J. and his swim team practice daily. The novel is indirectly stated as a present time setting. The setting of the story gives the reader the feeling of sympathy, trust, joy, sadness, and pride. For example, the reader feels sympathy when he sees Chris Coughlin being shoved into a locker by Mike Barbour for wearing his deceased brother’s lettermen jacket. The reader also feels joy and pride when the zero-to-hero swim team finally earns their lettermen jackets. The story would change dramatically if the setting was different such as, if the story took place in the past, the main conflict wouldn’t be earning a jacket for swimming, it would be for surviving the longest during the Black Plague. Tone The tone of the main character is very confident and wise. In certain situations, such as when T.J. tells the team that he believes that the entire team can earn a jacket, his tone was very confident. When he talked to females in the novel and gave the advice, his tone was wise. “Mom, somebody’s got to teach that asshole that he can’t...

...between American Settlers and Native Americans. Although most of us won't dare to admit, Native Americans had their rights to be anger and attack. For example, we were the one’s to come and take their territory as if they weren't already innocent people living here. And most Indians didn’t even react wrongly to our behavior, instead, they treated us as nicely as possible and gave us food of their own. But, enough about that, below I would be discussing and describing the ‘Last War against American Settlers and Native Americans’. THE LAST? I know right! The Battle of the Fallen Timbers was the battle that ended the...

...Fraser’s essay relays an informal, personal tone that captures readers with the vernacular casualness of the style as well as appeals to a plethora of differentiating personality groups. Fraser’s humor in the essay also highlights the human’s mindset including the issues in our thought process and decision making. Laura Fraser’s sense of humor completely changes the mood of the piece, and after all, when does humor not change the mood? Fraser’s comical style contradicts the seriousness of the topic to the point where the reader feels as though they are reading a personal entry rather than a dry, dull political document on the views of vegetarianism. In many occurrences, the author will ask rhetorical questions to offset what the conflict is. For example, when discussing how far utilitarianism can stretch to compensate for the negative effects, Fraser asks herself, “Wont free range do?” (548). The author fully knew that even buying and consuming free range chickens opposed her views as a vegetarian, yet she attempted to justify herself with a settlement. The use of rhetorical questions shows the amusement because vegetarians are supposed to be dedicated and committed to their anti-meat cause; however, she tries to find a hole through her reasoning. By doing so, the rhetoric adds more meaning to the essay as it reflects the misleading motives of her pro vegetarian views from the beginning. Also, Fraser uses informal phrases such as “The...

As Eleanor Roosevelt stated, “Learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.” In order to accomplish these tasks, I read Dispatches by Michael Herr. In this book, Michael Herr describes the Vietnam conflict from the point of view of the people of the ground and the view from the journalists covering the conflict. During the Vietnam...

...Similar to James Dean, Brando’s standard was the pair of jeans with a leather jacket. Only difference between the two was the total bad-boy attitude that Brando carried. Rolled-up cuffs, leather boots and a bike to go with it, the rebellious fashion Brando introduced in the cinema echoed in the youth for a long, long time. Steve McQueen The “King of Cool” Steve McQueen was likewise known for having an anti-hero persona; however his way to deal with style was novel. Unlike Dean and Brando, McQueen exceeded expectations at taking traditionally un-insubordinate sportswear and giving it edge. In addition to leather jackets and jeans, Steve McQueen rocked pale colored button downs, cardigans, V-necks, polo-shirts, and khaki’s. His notable accessory was a couple of aviators. Steve McQueen was additionally known for slim-cut custom-made suits and was similarly gifted at sprucing up – which is the reason Rolex even named one of their most refined watches after...

... enabling you to close the achievement and eliminate it permanently. Tatum believes in straight talk about race, particularly in the classroom. Tatum also show how to create an inclusive and safe environment for both teachers and students. She examined multiple classrooms, schools, and districts where the achievement gap has been successfully eliminated. Tatum want to explore that students of color face a gap between their own culture and the culture of school. The gap emerges at the earliest phases of school where students’ pre-existing knowledge is not honored in the school environment and students are “set-up” to fail. Students of color end up behind white students at the earliest stages of school. Students of color therefore feel a conflict between their home racial and ethnic identity and the identity that is required to be successful in school. Inclusion of race-related content in a college course identified three sources of resistance to learning about racism: race as taboo topic; myth of meritocracy; and denial of personal connection to racism. Strategies for reducing resistance include a safe classroom climate; opportunity for self-generated knowledge; model of racial identity development; and empowering students as change agents. The question of this is “Why do we must talk about race?” This is to move racism and ethnicity from abstraction to real human experience. Tatum identifies three sources of resistance to talking about race — a tendency to see race as a taboo...

...teen comedies John Hughes and produced with the help of Ned Tanen, represents a perfect mix of a joyful comedy and profound drama. To begin with, the situation represented in the film is quite realistic, except for the fact that such different people gathered together in the same place and at the same time. However, the viewer can consider that as a miraculous coincidence, which often happens in real life. Still, clear representation of youth problems, their behaviour and attitude to each other does not let us doubt that John Hughes has a subtle understanding of teenage psychology. As we can see in the movie, students stereotype each other at first without trying to find the reasons of such comportment. After a while, when they all conflict with their common enemy, principal Richard Vernon (Paul Gleason), and discover common desire to leave the place, they start to get along and even help...
