Although at the beginning of the play Lady Macbeth did present the idea to Macbeth himself; she wanted to just kill the one person. Macbeth and his inability to stand for himself and go against his wife went along with her plan. After the plan had been executed Lady Macbeth had been satiated and was at peace with their standing. Macbeth however wanted more.Macbeth illustrates the state of disillusionment his hunger for power has cost him by saying, "We've scorched the snake, not killed it." Macbeth decided that by eliminating all competition not just those who had come before him, he would consolidate and ensure his reign indefinitely. Upon entering the dinner party Macbeth himself recounts sending the murders to kill Banquo and Fleance. After successfully killing Banquo Macbeth realizes Banquo's son FLeance has escaped.
