Honesty One belief of the Puritan religion is that telling a lie is sinful, and sinning will force a person to live with the devil once they die. Being honest could make a person a well-respected member of the community, based off of their religious beliefs. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, many people in the village of Salem are accused of being witches. Many people end up being hanged, however, some confess to being conversing with the Devil, so they get off a bit easier. A main theme of this story is that honesty is stronger than anyone who is trying to break it down. Elizabeth was well respected within the community, and even though the village wanted her to confess, she didn’t lie, hoping to stay with John even though he committed adultery against her. …show more content…
Women still didn’t have a lot of rights, but John advocated on his wife’s behalf, especially when she was accused of being a witch. When one of the “out-of-towners,” who arrived in Salem to find witches, accused Elizabeth, John came to her defense. “My wife has never lied” (Miller 1310). Elizabeth was being questioned for honesty when saying that the poppet in her house was a gift from Mary Warren, and that she did not make it. Abigail only accused Elizabeth of being a witch so that she could take John, who she was still in love with. Before Elizabeth was taken away, Mr. Hale visited the Proctor’s to see if the accusations against Elizabeth were true. “There be no mark of blame upon my life, Mr. Hale” (Miller 1277). Reverend Hale was not able to distinguish the difference between Elizabeth and the other women accused of being witches, as he had only been in the village for a brief period of time. Throughout the Salem Witch Trials, and even when she was in jail, honesty remained a strong redeeming quality of Elizabeth

Why Is Elizabeth Proctor Important In The Crucible

...Arthur Miller gives us this play, which represents many things. He shows us people we can relate to and understand. We see trials and tribulations that these characters go through which helps us seem them as raw and unperfect people. Through these effects he establishes the foundations of The Crucible: courage, truth , and weakness which are represented by many characters throughout the play. Elizabeth Proctor, one of the plays most important characters, resembles truth like no other in the play. The part where she reveals her honesty and character is when she is called in front of the court to testify against Abigail Williams for comiting adultery with her husband. In this moment, she lies to protect her husband. Here she is honest to her husband and to her marriage. She is honest and tries to the bigger person in times of trial which is something we can all admire her for. Elizabeth Proctor's Lies In The Crucible

...According to The Crucible, lying is a constant factor in the play, and it always ends in destruction. Take Elizabeth Proctor, for example. In the beginning, she found lying a horrid thing to do; however, when the play starts to develop into the witch trials, she results in lying and basically kills her husband in the process. Although Elizabeth Proctor doesn’t change as much as other characters, her refinement did show the reader how lying is never the way to go as well as the beginning of John’s destruction. Prior to the story, one of the main conflicts is the affair between John Proctor and Abigail Williams. As his wife, Elizabeth knows of his affair: “I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. I never thought you but a good man, John, only somewhat bewildered” (Miller 18). Even when Proctor cheats on her, she does not sully his good name. Her actions are not immoral; therefore, it presents her as a rightful woman. Nevertheless, her reputable standard foreshadowed the inevitable....

Fallacies In The Crucible

...In Act three of “The Crucible,” during the altercation between Judge Danforth and Reverend Hale, Judge Danforth’s argument was extremely flawed. There were many instances when Danforth was talking, where he used logical fallacies. Compared to Reverend Hale, who used almost none, and had very sound reasoning. The first example of Judge Danforth’s erroneous argument came across when Hale challenged the credibility of the court system, saying there was “a prodigious fear” of the court in Salem. Furious with Reverend Hale for coming after his reputation, Danforth retaliated claiming, “No uncorrupted man may fear this court, Mr. Hale! None!” Judge Danforth broadly states that no righteous person could fear the law. Essentially saying that everyone...

Crucible John Proctor Traits

...After reading the crucible, I chose to write about John Proctor for my three character traits. John Proctor is a very self-respected character throughout the book, and though maybe he made some choices that were not exactly preferred, especially in the puritan religion and during that time period, he was very in-tune with himself enough to know what he stands for. In the eyes of god, and his wife Elizabeth, he thinks he is permanately damaged for his affair with Abigail Williams. John Proctor lacks the ability to forgive even himself for what he did. Elizabeth, John's wife is very resentful towards John throughout the play because it has become difficult for her to trust him again, let alone forgive him. John Proctor hides away and seems very stressed throughout the play because he is very tormented to confess his sins and sign his name....

Examples Of Flaws In The Crucible

...Many people can’t look past one’s flaws no matter what the person has done for them. Man can be a hero in spite of having some flaws. In Arthur Miller’s story The Crucible, the town of Salem is faced with a “witch problem”. Twelve girls claim they can see witches and accuse innocent women of witchcraft. This leads to many innocent people being put in jail, some of them put to death. The only way you could get out of being accused of witchcraft is if you confess. The confessing is what kept the trials going because then the people of Salem continue to think witchcraft exists. John Proctor, one of the main characters, had the flaw of adultery with Abigail Williams, one of the twelve girls accusing of witchcraft, but John still fought for justice in Salem. Throughout the story John was truthful, selfless, and strong. Some say that the truth can set you free. In John Proctors case, it cages him up. John tells the judges about his affair with Abigail to stop her and the girls from the witchcraft accusations and to free his wife. When he tells the truth, he realizes he is not a perfect man, but he is fighting for the right thing. I cannot mount the gibbet like a saint. It is a...

Leadership

...Chapter 10: Leadership: A Global Reality HILARIE OWEN Overview The concept of leadership has been written about for at least five thousand years. It is written in hieroglyphic form in the Cairo Museum and there is divided into three words: Seshemu (leader),Seshemet (leadership) and Shemsu (follower). Unlike management, leadership is an ancient concept and one that is used in everyday language. In addition, the language we use is not just a means of communication; it involves thinking and reasoning. In ancient Chinese writings we learn that if a leader is good it is more likely that those who follow will also be good. If the leader is selfish, so will the followers be selfish. Confucius regarded education as a transformational process that takes place within an individual but does so through conversation with others. Learning through others has been a common theme in the chapters written here from different parts of the world. In other words, learning leadership is not so much an isolated journey as one that exists in a set of relations with others. Finding what leadership potential you have is not something you do in isolation or on a training course. While the 20th century provided a huge richness of writings on leadership, leadership development in organizations focused on the individual as leader and this has created a gap between theory and practice. As John Gardner wrote: 'We have barely scratched the surface in our effort towards leadership development. In the mid 21st...
