The show that gave me the inspiration to pursue meta-narrative and story structure is Rick & Morty. In the 90’s The Simpson’s added the layer of depth to the sitcom that grounded it back into reality. Before the Simpsons sitcom’s presented the ‘idea’ of the what the average family was. Mainly they were Caucasian, upper-middle class and were few conflicts and flaws. This era of sitcom mainly had conflicts that would be resolved in 20-30 minutes, with no change or development in any characters. The Simpsons came along and shattered this notion, having the humor grounded with the characters and how they related to each other. Every character had flaws, just like a normal people. This made the stories the Simpsons told resonate with the audience and feel real. …show more content…
Harmon and Rowland use the meta-narrative to explore philosophical concepts such as alienation, isolation and nihilism. Harmon is an adamant believer of Campbell’s hero’s journey, using this model in each and every episode. An example of this is Season 3 Episode 3 ‘Pickle Rick’. Rick turns himself into a pickle in order to escape family counselling, the episode follows Rick on his adventures as pickle, whilst showing the family in counselling. Although Rick is able to escape the counselling at first, his adventure as a Pickle eventually ends with him in counselling. Rick believed turning himself into the pickle absolved him of responsibility of going to counselling (since he was a pickle). However, the counselor reveals to Rick that it was his choice to turn into the Pickle, so ultimately he is to one in control. This follows Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, as Rick turns himself into a pickle to escape counselling (main conflict), only to realize he was using it as an escape, he is forced to recognize this (the journey to the abyss and back). Despite advances in equal opportunities legislation, women failed to embark on expatriate missions in significant numbers during the 1980s. In the 1990s, more women were offered international assignment opportunities but they remained a negligible minority compared to men. The first decade of the twenty-first century has witnessed a gradual increase in the number and visibility of women in international assignments. Through a comprehensive review of the literature over the period from 1980 to now, this article charts the emerging themes and changes in the tone of discourse: from when organizations were debating whether to “give women a chance” through attempts to identify and remove “blockages” to women’s progress to, most recently, structural changes in the expatriate assignment and claims for women’s superior affinity to operating internationally.
