When I hear the word “poverty” I automatically think of homeless people, but poverty can stretch to even the wealthiest people. I believe that everyone at some point in their lives struggles from poverty, whether it be emotional, social, spiritual, or financial. The type that stood out to me in the Catcher in the Rye, 12 Angry Men, and in my life was emotional poverty. Emotional and mental poverty can be hard to deal with and in these circumstances were all dealt with differently.

In The Catcher in the Rye the main character, Holden was dealing with multiple types of poverty. He struggled with social poverty, not really having many friends or not really relating to most people. By always put on a different face and personality for almost all of the people he met in the book. He showed his emotional poverty through that as well. In my opinion, Holden also showed some mental poverty through not really knowing what to do or where to go. Also, Holden showed some cases of depression, he never really seemed truly happy or satisfied in what he was doing unless it was with Phoebe or helping little kids. Poverty is something we can fix, here at SHC where we “Enter to learn and leave to serve.” We can both serve the poor in society, but also the poor in spirit and emotion. The way Phoebe would lift up Holden’s spirit by just being with him cured him of his emotional poverty if only for a day. The way juror 3 finally realized why he wanted to the boy to die and why he did what he did to his son. And the way I want to help others dealing with emotional poverty. Because you never really know if someone is suffering with emotional or mental poverty I try my best to lift everyone’s spirits by making people smile and laugh. I hope everyone does the same to lift up the people suffering with all types of poverty and not drag them
