...Darian Greenbaum K. Baker English 1100 13 November 2012 Left Side, Strong Side Remember the Titans is a film directed by Boaz Yakin bases in 1971 when discrimination, prejudice, and racism was still a way of life. Due to a court order, three high schools in Alexandria, Virginia were forced to integrate their students and faculty for the first time. Consequently, Coach Bill Yoast, a prominent, white member of the community and longtime head coach of the T.C. Williams High School football team, is asked to step down. Herman Boone is appointed to replace him as the school's first black faculty member and head football coach. The new coach faces many challenges; the newly integrated team is full of players (both black and white) who have little trust or respect for one another. Boone is determined, however, to put a winning team on the field. Against the odds, Boone helps his team over-come doubt and misconceptions of their coach, and each other, as they become an undefeated team eager to partake in the championship, united. Remember the Titans shows that people can put aside their individual needs and wants for the greater good of the team and the community. The film loudly conveys that building inter-racial friendships, one by one, then group by group, can transform a community. The relationship between Gerry Bertier and Julius Campbell highly resembles, at first, the tension amongst whites and blacks during the 1970’s. Gerry, the white captain of the football...

However the government may be able to eliminate racism in the law, but racism within the people cannot be eliminated by the government itself. Remember the Titans was directed by Boaz Yakin in 2000. The movie takes place in 1971 in Alexandria Virginia. Two separate schools with separate races, are forced to integrate by the school board and form one school called T.C. Williams. ...fear and loathing, which results from a preconceived cognition or stereotype. I.E. black people aren’t as smart as white people, all gay men are effeminate etc. These core beliefs more often than not lead to heavily discriminatory behaviour from the in-group in order to undermine the out-group/minority and force them to believe their own stereotypes. This idea can be clearly related back to the movie Remember the Titans where racism, sexism and homophobia were a regular occurrence backed up by such discriminatory behaviour as segregation, work-place favouritism and often, violence. Despite this, a number of practices can be put in place in everyday life in order to reduce prejudicial attitudes and behaviour, including superordinate goals, mutual interdependence and intergroup contact. Social psychologists throughout history have developed a number of theories pertaining as to how and why people develop prejudices toward one another; however, only a small number have been found to be applicable to most situations in life and can be readily observed throughout Remember the Titans. Such theories include, realistic conflict theory, social identity theory and mere exposure. The theory of realistic conflict was first conceived by Donald Campbell in the 1960’s and is the social psychological model of intergroup conflict. The theory explains how intergroup hostility can arise as an immediate result of competition over a real or perceived limited resource. It also serves as a basis...

...Remember the Titans “If we don’t come together right now, on this hallowed ground, we, too, will be destroyed. Just like they were” (Bruckheimer & Yakin, 2000). These words were spoken by the new head football coach of T.C. Williams High School, Herman Boone, as he sought to unite his segregated team by comparing their fight against racial injustices to the Civil War’s devastating battle of Gettysburg. The coach goes on to explain that thousands of men died fighting the same fight the players were fighting amongst themselves that day. As the boys stand there, speechless, the viewers of the film realize that this is a pivotal point in the movie Remember the Titans. Based on a true story, this heartrending film presents to its audience what racial...

...humanity, we must be. Humanity: benevolence, understanding and kindness towards other people. It is, arguably, our very human nature to feel compassion, courage, understanding, unity and empathy towards our fellow man. Unfortunately, prejudice and judgement also cling to the human condition like tumorous stains – traits which society still finds hard to surmount. Despite the efforts of governments, groups and individuals, humankind still finds it difficult to trust based on the soul of a person; we are more comfortable making judgements based on skin colour. Nelle Harper Lee through her 1960 novel, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ and Boaz Yakin through his 2000 film, ‘Remember the Titans,’ are text composers who tackle the ill-defined paradigms of ‘prejudice, courage and unity’ by painting a picture of the confronting face of racism. Prejudice, courage and unity are notions that are dealt with differently by both composers and, through their use of structural and linguistic features, each composer presents this concept in a manner which connects (or weakens a connection)...

...movies of another genre which use sport scenes to dramatise the story or to create a good suspense. The first sport movies were all about the so called American Myth of victory and glory. Fair competitions and the better athletes defeating the weaken. The fascination of sport inspiring the people was used to lure the public. Then in the eighties and nineties there have been made a lot of biographical movies about sport legends. Sportsmen-biographies are good to show the fight, the rise and fall and the strokes of fate athletes have to cope with. A very famous movie made at that time is “Ali”, which shows the story of the box champion Muhammad Ali. Then sometimes even the sport stars on their own were involved in sport movies. For example the Swedish soccer team left themselves a memorial in...

...Remember the Titans definitely has a few stereotypes represented in the movie. To start with the most obvious one, the community was your stereotypical, violent, southern, segregated community that was common during the 1970s. A southern community sets the scene for racial prejudice, and violent outbursts. The southern individuals even had the southern way of speaking, which we in the 21st century would consider to be 'red neck,' helps connote racial prejudice as well. Moving more specifically towards individual stereotypes, blacks are immediately seen as 'less fit' in all aspects including the football team. This is exemplified when the white, defensive coach consoles the black players after getting harshly yelled at by the black, head coach....

...In the movie, Remember The Titans, Coach Boone delivers a compelling speech to his racially segregated football team in attempt to unify them and break both the social and racial tensions by comparing the young men to the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil Rights Movement. Remember the Titans is based off of a true story and is written by Gregory Allen Howard. Released in late 2000, the movie was mainly filmed in Woodstock Georgia and other areas of Atlanta. The time period in which the movie was filmed, was meant to portray the early 1970s in the south. The purpose of this speech was to show the disastrous outcome of the battle due to the men not fighting together as a team. Coach Boone is trying to get the players to realize that they...

...Remember the Titans is a movie set in the 1970’s where two black and white segregated schools integrate to form T.C Williams High School, creating a new interracial football team. The film begins with a scene where blacks and whites are seen rioting and protesting over a black teenager who was killed by a white storeowner. There is evidently much disrespect and prejudice shown towards members of the African-American community in the film, which is generally fostered by the lack of understanding between the two Black and White cultures. The disrespect is displayed through the racist terms used in the movie, and the constant criticism and derogatory comments directed towards those of the opposite race, especially by Gerry, his mother, and his...

...Among the many examples of leadership portrayed in this movie is Gerry Bertier, captain of the TC Williams football team. Gerry showed qualities of leadership by taking charge and following through with his responsibility. One of the ways he did this was by dropping Ray, his best friend, from the team due to the fact that Ray was not playing defensively on behalf of his Negro teammates, which resulted in the injury of one of them. Even though this decision threatened his friendship with Ray, Gerry still fulfilled his responsibility. Another quality of leadership Gerry shows is open-mindedness; he connected to all of his teammates—even the black ones. In fact, he became very good friends with Julius Campbell, one of Gerry’s black teammates. Despite the racism and tension in the air, Gerry made it his duty to be positive and lead the Titans to victory. “Remember the Titans” is not only a commemoration of the breaking of racial barriers in Virginia, but also of the true meaning of leadership. Julius Campbell and Gerry Bertier, as well as many other people in this movie, prove the viewers that leadership is about being a trendsetter, standing for what you believe in, and having a positive influence. Successful leaders look for opportunities, not obstacles. Bertier in many ways is the protagonist in this movie however he probably wouldn't want to be considered above anyone or more important than any of his teammates. As one watches "Remember the Titans", Gerry Bertier stands...

...Remember the Titans Jessica Valentine SOC 318 Sociology of Sport Dr. Marnie Carroll May 18, 2015 Remember the Titans Our general public has truly and still right up 'til today managed a large number of issues that significantly separates societies, organizations, associations and all the more essentially individuals. Sports can in a flash be put in this classification when matters identified with isolation, race and ethnicity are interrelated. I have chosen the film "Remember the Titans" to examine the effects of the previously stated as they relate to sports all through this paper. In 2000, Remember the Titans was an American sports film focused upon fanciful African American football mentor Herman Boone who was depicted by super star Denzel Washington. This motion picture was not just one of the top rated and enthralling films of its year, however offered groups of onlookers a complete representation of mutual activities and leads in the lives of individuals like themselves. Using our text to break down and thoroughly describe the movie in regards to realistic conflict theory, cultural theory and racism all of which plays into the factor of sociology of sport. Prejudice is the amazing conviction that races have unmistakable attributes and inherited variables, and, likewise, certain races are better than others. The realistic conflict theory suggests that contentions between two distinct gatherings will emit as the gatherings contend over the same constrained assets...

...Remember the Titans Organization: T.C. Williams High School Football Team (Alexandria Virginia 1971) * Organizational Environment: Consisted of the school board, the coaches, the team and the community. * Org. Structure: Due to desegregation, the structural norm of an all-white high school, coaching staff and football team, soon changed when a new head coach was appointed. * Org. Culture: In the beginning, everyone was out for their own self interests. The school board was trying to sabotage Coach Boone. Both coaches were out to make a name for themselves (Boone: Up and Coming/Yoast: Hall of Fame). The team members had their own initiatives (to get their desired positions). While white members of the community were waiting for failure, the black members longed for a figurehead. The coaches, team, and the community struggled to understand and except one another. The mentality was “This is how we do things around here”, but that was all about to change. * Org. Climate: At first everyone lacked motivation to put forth the effort of trying to work together. For example: Boone took offense & Yoast took defense. The team captains weren’t showing any leadership and the community members were extremely divided. Racism and football was the backdrop for the clash of leadership styles and personal perspectives that each man had to learn and understand from each other because they all shared one common goal, to become a winning team. * Team Building: At camp when...

...Hayden Liljenquist ENG 102 Dr. Pegram July 31, 2012 Team Effort: The Communities Created Through Sports Introduction Within today’s society, a number of small, unique communities exist. Communities can range from social, to religious, to occupational. In order to be considered a separate and distinct “community,” the group needs to share common characteristics or interests and be perceived as distinct from the larger society as a whole. Sports teams provide a particularly good example of a community. They separate themselves by the games they play, even by the name they call themselves. The entire world of sports itself can seem confusing to someone who doesn’t understand the rules. Behind each game is a complex realm of jargon, hierarchy, and guidelines. In order to play, you need to learn. And hopeful members work to earn their spot on the team. Through personal participation, as well as observation, one can witness for themselves just how the community created by a team functions. The team experience resonates with a lot of people, and has attracted film makers with stories of motivation, hope, and overcoming the odds. Many of the most well-known sports movies are often even inspired by true stories. In all of these films, similar themes can be found, demonstrating just how much the feeling of community within teams is shared throughout all areas of sports. Teams have a goal, face a challenger, and overcome obstacles, all in the hope of...

...African American Stereotypes in Movies Media Research Methods CO 455 November 20, 2012 African American Stereotypes in Movies Introduction There once was a time when everyone expected the black man to be the first actor to die in every movie that possessed a black man in its cast. However, over time the assumption of the black man being the first to die has changed. Currently in the year 2012, there are progressively more movies in which black men portray leading roles. This change in black men as leading characters in movies is a welcome change. In the past, supporting or backup roles were considered the best role a black man could achieve. In this paper, the researcher will conduct information by means of content analysis. Content analysis is the most commonly used methodology because of its ability to measure human behavior, assuming that the verbal behavior is a form of behavior. This study will examine specific media products and define these products by determining smaller elements that complement these products. This document will address a wide view of concerns regarding the African American culture, and will provide assumptions on how this issue can be addressed in the future. The stereotype of African Americans in movies today, is the topic of this research paper. Why do African Americans face stereotypes in the media? Why do black actors and actresses have difficulty obtaining roles that are not stereotypical...

...Open Happiness, Refresh Everything Brian Helton University of St. Mary Marketing Management – MGT704 Instructor: Marc Lyncheski April 14, 2012 There are certain companies that through the use of exceptional marketing programs and well as aggressive business strategies have become recognized the world around. Many of these are part of our everyday life and if not then we see them every day in our comings and goings. Two of these world-wide brands that many of us know are also extremely similar in both product as well as marketing strategy. Those two brands are The Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo, Inc. On May 8, 1886, a pharmacist named Dr. John Pemberton carried a jug of Coca-Cola syrup to Jacobs’ Pharmacy in downtown Atlanta, where it was mixed with carbonated water and sold for five cents a glass. (Our Heritage, 2012) Three years later in the summer of 1898 a young pharmacist named Caleb Bradham began experimenting with combinations of spices, juices and syrups, trying to create a refreshing new drink to serve to his customers. His success came in the form of the beverage now known around the world as Pepsi-Cola. (Pepsi Legacy, 2005) And from that day forward the rivalry between Coca-Cola and Pepsi would become legendary. These two beverage companies are competing for the top spot in a massive global market. The cola and carbonated beverage industry reaches to nearly every corner of the planet, and the...
