Essay On The Outsiders

...In the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, the gang that includes Ponyboy, Sodapop, Darry, Two-Bit, Dally, and Johnny shows a group of boys in a gang that is based on a group of friends that depend on each other for different reasons. These reasons include not having a strong family tie, not having parents, and not having a home. This relates to an article written by Amanda Vogt titled “Gangs a Cry for Family” which talks and explains that troubled teens with problems with family go to gangs for a sense of family and belonging. One reason is teens not having a strong relationship with their parents or not having parents. In the book The Outsiders, Johnny didn’t have much of a relationship with both of his parents, because they drank and yelled at him so he went to the gang and found a home to go too. He also found a group of friends that cared for him and wanted him to feel good and have a...

Dishonorable In The Outsiders

...Reasons for Greasers to be Dishonorable Is there honor among the lawless? I think not. In the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton is a book about a group of greasers who live in a poor neighborhood and are against a group of soc’s. The greasers do a lot of dishonorable things and they always get mistreated because of it. But the soc’s since they live on the south side they are rich and they can always use anything against the greasers to get them in trouble. The greasers from The outsiders are not honorable because they steal, murder people, and threaten to kill people with blades. In The outsiders, the greasers do a lot of dishonorable stuff. For example, Dally robbed a grocery store and was running from the cops. In the book it quotes that “ It was Dally... he just robbed a grocery store and the cops are after him we gotta hide him..” (157). This is dishonorable because what person robs a store and then pulls a gun out at the cops and starts shooting and calls that honorable. Doing all that stuff was cowardly of Dally because since he didn’t want to feel...

The Outsiders

...The novel, “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton, is classified as Young Adult Fiction. In this novel, Hinton writes about real life situation teenagers go through. As for the teenagers in “The Outsiders”, social class is a major issue that brings most of the conflicts throughout the story. In this story, there are two types of people: the “Socs” and the “Greasers”. The Socs are a young and wealthy group who believe they are superior over the less fortunate. The Greasers are an example of a less fortunate group. The Greasers are “hoodlums” who live in the ghetto and are basically uneducated criminals who live in poverty. The Greasers get there name from the casual way the gang dresses, long hair that it greased constantly, and leather jackets. Ponyboy is the main Greaser character. Ponyboy has two brothers, Sodapop and Darry, and all three of them are in a gang. The Curtis’ boys have been through a lot since their parents died, and they are living each day trying to fend for themselves. Ponyboy is an intelligent young man who is constantly pushed to become something better than what he grew up to be by his two brothers. Ponyboy is walking home from school where he had been abruptly confronted by the West Side Soc who asked Ponyboy is he “needed a haircut” while he held his switchblade close to Ponyboy’s face. The Socs begin to beat Ponyboy up until Ponyboy’s brothers hear his death scream and quickly gather the gang along to the scene. Months before, another member of the...

Outsiders, Compare Book and Movie

...Sixteen years after a sixteen-year-old wrote this book, Francis Ford Coppola turned this novel into a movie. The book is a coming-of-age novel, but the movie focuses on the characters' loss of innocence. The movie follows the story line very closely. The reader is only told that this story takes place in the southwest, but the movie places it in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the year 1966. It also changes the conflict from the East Side versus the West side to the northside versus the southside. This minor directional change was probably made due to the relative time proximity to the musical West Side Story, which won the best picture Academy Award in l961. However, as with all movies, character insight that is critical to understanding the story is lost when the format goes from the written word to the screen. Ponyboy is telling us the story, the same as in the book, but the 91-minute film only glosses over many character relationships. With the exception of Ponyboy, the viewer misses out on knowing most of the novel's characters. Ponyboy In The Outsiders

...In the novel, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, Ponyboy is the main character. Throughout the novel, Ponyboy changed very much. Ponyboy is intelligent, courageous, and caring. Ponyboy is intelligent; he is an all around smart kid. “... I make good grades and have a high IQ... “ (4, Hinton) Ponyboy is intelligent because he gets good grades and has a high IQ. Also because he wrote a book. “ I wondered for a long time how to start that theme, how to start writing about something that was important to me.” (180, Hinton) His end of year theme turned out to be the book The Outsiders. Ponyboy is also courageous. He takes responsibility for his actions. “I jerked loose and ran on. All I could think was. We started it. We started it. We started it.” (91, Hinton) When the church was on fire, Ponyboy and Johnny ran in to get the kids out because they knew they started the fire and couldn’t let someone get hurt from their mistake. Ponyboy is also courageous because when Johnny died he had to make death mean something. “Right then the most important thing in my life was helping us whip the Socs.” (134, Hinton) Another example is when Johnny killed Bob, the Soc. “We gotta get outa here. Get somewhere. Runaway.” (57, Hinton) Ponyboy didn’t...

The Outsiders Comparison Essay

...The Outsiders was a book written by 16-year-old S.E. Hinton in 1967. It is a book about two rival gangs, the Greasers and Socs, and how each gang member helps each other in order to defeat the rival gang. Inspired from the book, there was a movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1983. While watching the movie, I have noticed a copious amount of similarities and differences between the book and the movie. I noticed a lot of similarities between the book and the movie. For example, the storyline, plot, setting, and conflict were all the same. The book and the movie started with Ponyboy getting jumped and ended with Ponyboy solving all of his problems and coming back to the beginning. The setting of both the book and the movie took place in Oklahoma. In both the book and the movie, the events happened for the same reason such as the rumble, or Ponyboy and Johnny running away and getting jumped at the fountain....

Symbolism In The Outsiders

...meaning alongside their beauty. In S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, colors, specifically red, yellow and gold, and blue, have intricately crafted meanings. S.E Hinton gave the colors meaning and made it so that read symbolizes anger, violence, danger, pain, fear, and heat. Gold is meant to be associated with comfort, warmth, things Ponyboy admires, and precious thing Ponyboy has lost. Blue is tied to coldness, in means of both temperature and personality, death, and lack of feeling. In a book where every color has a meaning, the author must have meant for this to happen. In The Outsiders, red symbolizes anger, violence, danger, pain, fear, and heat. One example of a red symbol on page 64 is the red dirt road leading to the abandoned church in Windrixville. Taking into account how terrified Ponyboy and Johnny must have been of getting arrested for murder and the potential danger of the situation, it makes sense that the author chose to add this detail. Another red symbol is Cherry Valance’s fiery personality....

Loss Of Innocence In The Outsiders

...Throughout the novel The Outsiders, Ponyboy Curtis probably changes more throughout the course of the Outsiders than any other character. Ponyboy’s innocence plays a major part of the novel. In the course of the novel Ponyboy matures and feels many different types of feelings in certain events. One example of this is when Johnny and him saved the kids from the burning church and were part heroes part criminals. In this example Ponyboy’s actions describe how he is maturing and how he is witnessing important events unfold in the book. Towards the start of the Outsiders Ponyboy is an intelligent young teen, who is part of the track team. Although, he lacks the perspective to understand everyone around him. This means he can only see his part of the story and fails to see why others act the way they do. One example of this is how Darry, Ponyboy’s older brother, is always treating him bad. Ponyboy is constantly always thinking about how Darry bully’s him and is mean to him for no reason. Also,...

Sympathy For Darry In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton

...In the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton we feel more sympathy for Darry rather than Ponyboy. Darry had to miss part of his education and he had to work very hard without appreciation from the rest of his family. One reason why we feel more sympathy for Darry is because Darry had to miss his education even though he had a sports scholarship. For instance on page 16 it says “But we just didn’t have enough money to go to college even with the athletic scholarship he won”. A reason why this shows that we are more sympathetic for Darry is in view of the fact he worked tirelessly, put in his best efforts, and time. He still did not accomplish what he wanted. He deserves sympathy for this because in the meantime he had to juggle a family, school,...

Greasers In S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders

...Heroes don't all have to be perfect. The Outsiders is a book about the Greasers and the Socs. The greasers are poor and not have all of their basic needs met as the Socs are rich and get everything thing they want. this starts a rivalry. S.E Hinton wrote The Outsiders when she was only 16 because she was a teenager it provides an accurate portrayal of what being a teenager was like in the 1960s. The book was based in the 1960s and took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In this book there is a lot to argue if the greasers should consider themselves heroes or villains. The greasers are heroes because they stand up for what they believe in, they risk their lives for others, each and every one of them has had to overcome hard challenges, and they help each other become stronger. The first characteristic that make one or more of the Greasers heroes is that they stand up for what they believe in the fourth chapter ponyboy says to the Socs. “You know what a Soc is? White trash with mustangs and Madras.”(page 55) this is an insult to the Socs because the Socs had been cussing out Ponyboy and Johnny for picking up their girls, and they were not ok with that. Ponyboy had gotten fed up that the Socs and...

Also when feeling like an outsider can feel like the outcast. Like in the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton feeling “isolated or an outsider” a lot in this novel. Ponyboy is portrayed as an outsider for he doesn't fit in his gang,he doesn't like fighting he makes friend outside of his gang friends. Ponyboy is viewed that he doesn't fit in because he smarter than everyone else. Typically Greasers don't care about school and usually drop out like Ponyboy's brother Sodapop. Also Greasers do bad things in school and don't care about there'd reputation. Hinton writes, “I never could please...

Stay Gold In The Outsiders

..."Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold." (148) While reading the book "The Outsiders" by Se Hinton staying gold is mentioned many times in the book. The book is about a greaser named Ponyboy from Tulsa Oklahoma, Ponyboy goes through trials with some of his best buddies. I think that one of the best themes showed in the book is staying gold even when things around you are changing. I think this because they talk about Robert Frosts poem "Nothing Gold can Stay" (77) Secondly the book talked about people through out the book doing golden things to help the greasers out, and lastly before Johnny passes he tells Ponyboy to stay gold. First of all I think that one of the best themes from this book is staying gold while everything else is changing, one of the reasons why I think this is because in the book it mentions...
