...In the Crucible, there are concepts of weakness, courage, and truth that are displayed throughout the play and through significant roles. There are characters in the play that are weak in the sense that they are simply too afraid to speak, such as the character Mary Warren who was afraid to speak up about how Abigail Williams and the other girls were merely faking the entire situation. There is also Reverend Parris who didn’t want to admit that he had seen one of the girls naked and blamed it all on witchcraft. Abigail Williams is also a victim of weakness as she couldn’t keep away from John Proctor. Next is courage. Of course, John Proctor showed immense courage throughout the play by sacrificing himself for his wife and others who were...

...People often say that a tragic hero will have to sacrifice themselves due to their weakness. In the play The Crucible, John Proctor fits this description very well. Although Aristotle’s qualifications for a tragic hero include being of noble birth, John proctor is best described as a tragic hero because he ends up dying to save his name due to his flaw. In The Crucible, John Proctor is a common man and known throughout his community. Towards the beginning of the novel, he has an affair with a girl named Abigail. This will be the weakness of John. Throughout the rest of the novel, there is just about always conflict between John and his wife Elizabeth. However, when they start to resolve their issues, they have to go to court and John gets convicted of being a liar...

...The crucible In Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible” explains importants of weakness, courage, and truth that sees how in litrature it can be easily applied to life for example how about parris and abigail? have you ever had any difficulties with other famlly members? or how about proctor and Elizabeth? we can see couples fighting all the time so now we will see how important is truth, courage, and weakness is applied in this play. Weakness we all have some sort of weakness inside us some of us are better at hiding it than others. That is also what proctor did earlier on the play in act I since he and abigail had sex which in their culture was adultary or in other words cheating. and also parris is hate for proctor had made him blind since...

...Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” is a fictional account of the real life Salem witch trials, but the play has far deeper meanings than just a dramatic interpretation of the event. While it does provide an entertaining experience at face value, the true literary genius behind the work is Miller’s insight on human nature and the depravity of man. He uses the story of the witch trials to touch on hypocrisy, tendency to turn to revenge, and human weakness. Firstly, the theme of hypocrisy is found amongst the town of Salem as a whole, especially those who support the witch trials. They are supposed to have strong Christian values, yet they are extremely vindictive. More specifically, Mary Warren says that she is doing the Lord’s work, when in fact she is contributing to the deaths of people who know and love God. “I must tell you, sir, I will be gone every day now. I am amazed you do not see what weighty work we do,” (56) she says in act II. Another example is the hypocrisy within the Salem court system. Judge Danforth claims that his court reveals all truth when he says, “We burn a hot fire here:...

...Arthur Miller gives us this play, which represents many things. He shows us people we can relate to and understand. We see trials and tribulations that these characters go through which helps us seem them as raw and unperfect people. Through these effects he establishes the foundations of The Crucible: courage, truth , and weakness which are represented by many characters throughout the play. Elizabeth Proctor, one of the plays most important characters, resembles truth like no other in the play. The part where she reveals her honesty and character is when she is called in front of the court to testify against Abigail Williams for comiting adultery with her husband. In this moment, she lies to protect her husband. Here she is honest to her husband and to her marriage. She is honest and tries to the bigger person in times of trial which is something we can all admire her for. John Proctor, like his wife, has not only superior morals and character, but more courage than the average man. Proctor shows us multiple times that he is more than willing to stand up for...

...The Crucible is about a town with people who do court judgement based on what god would do. Religion is very important to most of the town. Throughout this play there are some characters who realize the truth on what is going on in Salem an change there point of view in this situation. For example Mary Warren she changed. Also brought shocking news in the court house and she was good for lying. I will get into her weakness and courage and where she told truth. Mary Warren's weakness was Abigail. She put fear into Mary's eye without even looking at her. She knew Abigail's plan and Mary was scared of so she played along about the witchcraft. Together with other girls they caused a serious problem in Salem. These girls don't realize that doing...

...Weakness, courage and truth. all very powerful actions that can have a very big effect on the outcome of many situations. In the crucible, we see a very significant amount of examples of each of these traits. almost every character has examples of each. In this, we will explore some of these, and explain why they are so. Weakness, an understandable situation when you are put in the same place as these people. Doing nothing wrong, simply being accused, no way out, the only options are death or imprisonment. It is quite believable some of the decisions people make when under this amount of pressure. One example of this is Mary Warren. Mary warren was the servant to the proctors. When things started going bad, with goody proctor being arrested,...

... Critical Lens Someone once said “Evil triumphs when good men do nothing” meaning that when a good person decides to do nothing evil will succeed. For example if someone was getting bullied and an onlooker decide to do nothing than evil would prosper. This quote id false because there in no way to know who is “good” and who is “bad” due to everyone having a different understanding of what is good and what is bad. Some people believe that those who don’t go to church are bad but in reality many people who don’t go to church have better morals than those who do go to church yet the fact they don’t makes them seem bad. Another way this quote is false is that if someone were truly “good” then they wouldn’t stand around and watch as evil prospered. One piece of literature that proves this quote true is The Crucible by Arthur Miller through his use of characterization and conflict. As stated above the quote “Evil Triumphs when good men do nothing” is false due to the elusive from in which “good men” is used. In The Crucible Arthur Millers’ use of characterization proves this quote false. The Crucible is a play about the domino affect which wild accusations about witchcraft caused in a small religious town known as Salem’s Village. In The Crucible Arthur Miller shows that people are ignorant and only care about their well being. Arthur Miller shows this through the characteristics of Parris, Abigail, Marry Warren, and the town’s people....

...America did not start off majestic and kind, do its valley of fear, and suspicion that spread like wildfire among each blade of grass. Giles is an honorable man in a play called “The Crucible” that is originating in Salem. Giles was both brave, true, and momentarily weak; he had to be all of these things if he wanted to rest as an honorable man too. The suspicion of witchcraft, and neighbors being associated with Lucifer himself had a horrific outbreak across the nation. Giles was an older man with a lovely wife, it was his third. She was strange in a sense only because she loved to read, and that was odd for a woman back then. Giles was complaining to a new Reverend in town named John Hale, and he was complaining that he was easily confused in prayer. He also mentioned his wife had read alone often. This comment how ever true when said, but mistaken when reported got his wife hung. He was only speaking the truth when mentioning it, and did not want any harm to come to his love. To show the court wrong he got a petition to go around the village with names of all those who disagreed with the court. When the court asked for the names he stayed true...

...LC Plays and Performance – Formative Assesment To what extent are the plays you have studied on this module concerned with issues of gender? Both The Crucible by Arthur Miller and A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare are highly evocative pieces of theatre that have transcended the category of brilliance and have had a profound effect on the course of Western literature and culture. Both plays explore a broad range of themes, from the supernatural to comments on the power of religion in society. However, I have chosen to explore the ways in which they portray the theme of gender. Firstly I will examine the issues regarding gender in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in particular the oppression of the female characters. I will explore Shakespeare’s portrayal of Titania and Hermia and his ability to disguise the deeper feminist consciousness that is at work. I will then look at the way in which gender is presented in Miller’s The Crucible, ranging from the heroic depiction of John Proctor to the oppositional presentations of Abigail and Elizabeth. William Shakespeare is a famously suggestive author in terms of highlighting issues regarding gender ideology. Although in some works, such as Othello, he reflects and arguably supports the stereotyping of men and women, he is also seen to challenge such representations. A Midsummer Night’s Dream dramatizes tensions between genders, from a young woman quarrelling with her father for the right to choose her own husband, to Theseus...

...Knowledge: What were the most memorable moments in the books for you? Why? How do you connect to these moments? How do these moments relate to each other? “He moved forward delicately, his right hand outstretched. The crucible began to settle— collapse, the silver was running over the top of the furnace like spilled milk. Johnny jumped toward it, his right hand outstretched. Something happened, he never knew exactly what. His feet wet out from under him. His hand came down on top of the furnace” (Johnny Tremain pg. 38) This moment was a plot-turning part in the book Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes. I loved this moment because, it was full of intensity and action. This scene had changed the view that I had on Johnny but, this moment had resulted in Johnny becoming a hero in the book. If Johnny had not burnt his hand, then he would have still been arrogant and felt as if he was the boss. In this scene, Johnny is trying to build the wealthy merchant’s (John Hancock) cup handle to perfection with a short amount of time. Since...

...p Chapter 21 Leadership Theories and Styles Learning Objectives After studying this chapter, you will be able to: 1. Distinguish leaders from administrators and managers 2. Describe the evolution of leadership theories 3. Enumerate different theories of leadership, and their main features. 4. Discuss the contingency theories, especially situational theory of leadership 5. Explain the concept of the development levels of a group and how to raise them 6. List steps in the process of delegation Leadership has long interested psychologists, sociologists, political scientists, and certainly management scientists. There is still a growing interest in leadership, which has been defined in different ways. Leadership can, however, be simply defined as the act of making an impact on others in a desired direction. In this sense, leadership is a broader term than management. Managers can run organizations effectively, but only leaders can build them. Differentiating characteristics for officers, managers, and leaders are shown in see Exhibit 21.1. The three modes shown in Exhibit 21.1 are illustrated by the following caselet from a premier state government training institute: Three directors at different times functioned differently. One director continued the work the institute was doing, responding to the training requirements of different departments, maintaining all the records well, and undertaking the various activities...
