Augmenting the service-oriented model for e-Research are mechanisms for services to be coupled and enacted in a coordinated manner through workflow environments. Typically workflows capture a research process that can be shared and repeated by others. However, existing models of workflow definition and enactment assume that services are directly available and can be accessed and invoked by arbitrary users or enactment engines. In more security-oriented domains, such assumptions rarely hold true. Rather in many domains, service providers demand to be autonomous and define and enforce their own service / resource access control using locally defined policy enforcement points (PEP) and policy decision points (PDP) which allow access and usage of resources to be strictly monitored and enforced. Defenders of slotting allowances have asserted that, among other things, they cover the cost of introducing new products to the marketplace and thereby tend to foster entry and innovation”. (ftc.gov 2001) While the Department of Justice concludes that the practice of slotting allowance is not an antitrust issue there is a possibility that there may be issues in the future with anticompetitive exclusion. Slotting allowance is a practice used by manufacturers and retailer to stock certain products on the shelves. It was most prevalent in supermarkets but spread to other store i.e. electronic stores and computer stores. For example, Microsoft pays a fee to have an end cap (spot at the end of an aisle) to display their product only. Some feel that it is an exclusivity practice that leaves out smaller businesses that cannot compete with the fees required by retailers. The process was for manufactures to introduce new product to customers. But it is now a wide spread practice to charge a fee to keep their mature (older) products on the shelf. ...WT AWT vs. Swing AWT vs. Swing For this assignment, it has been requested the author write a review of the advantages and disadvantages of AWT (Abstract Window Toolkit) vs. Swing in writing a Java program. AWT is a portable GUI library for standalone applications or applets with an advantage of speed in it’s use of native peers and performance. Additionally most web browsers support AWT so the applets designed will have greater ease in use and design and AWT components look similar to the operating system in which they run on. Swing uses a set of GUI components built upon AWT technology and gives it something of a “plug and play” feel and is implemented entirely in the Java programming language. Having pure Java design, it has a greater range of behavior and not limited by the native peers that AWT uses. Additionally it has a wider range of features like icons and pop up tools. Another thought, and this is opinion, is that Sun puts more interest into swing and makes it a more robust program for it’s web based uses. The look and feel with it’s pluggable abilities lets a user design a single set of GUI applications that look similar to the native OS it is running on. Some disadvantages of AWT are the third party development and it’s smaller set of components that are available and the components typically do not support icon and tool tips.
