...SAMPLE --- STUDENT WRITING Research Paper When Pets Become Predators What is an owner to do with a pet that has become too aggressive to handle, too expensive to feed or too large to house? This is a question many uneducated exotic pet owner’s face soon after purchasing a juvenile exotic reptile. Unfortunately, for many pet owner’s, the answer is to release the pet into our neighborhoods and parks creating a multitude of problems for homeowner’s, State officials and the environment. Probably the best known pet to become a predator is the Burmese python, also known as the Indian python. Burmese pythons average approximately 13 feet in length, but can grow to over 20 feet. (Indian Python) Their weight may exceed 200 pounds. Most owners begin feeding their juvenile pythons mice, but a snake grows quickly and graduates to rabbits, chickens and eventually pigs. A full grown python requires a cage of at least 8 feet in length. Because a Burmese python has a life expectancy of over 20 years, the potential buyer must carefully evaluate the long term commitment required with this purchase. Another well know pet to predator is the Nile monitor lizard. These lizards average 4 to 6 feet in length, but can soon grow to 7 feet. They are a carnivorous lizard that as a juvenile begins eating crickets, then graduates to gold fish and later to rats and other small animals. Are Zoos Inhumane

...Zoos are a popular place to visit, but according to research, zoos are in fact not what they seem to be. According to research zoos are proven to be inhumane. Researchers say that the animal’s enclosures are too small and they’re unhygienic. Also zookeepers are mean to the animals. Zoos are not suitable education tools, zoos are unethical. Not all zoos are bad, but this research shows the downside of zoos. In addition to these facts, this paper will provide an in depth look at zoos. One reason that proves that zoos are inhumane is that their enclosures are too small. One researcher said that the enclosures are “1000 times smaller than their natural habitats” (Pomeroy). This is bad because the animals need the room to roam so they don’t feel...

Research Paper

...Final Research Paper Animal rights to freedom Steven McFarlane DeVry University Advanced Composition Professor Christopher Drew August 27, 2013 Animal Rights To freedom Since the beginning of time animals had rights to do as they please in their own habitat. As time accumulated, these rights slowly faded with entertainment usage of animals. Animals do not belong in a zoo for personal visual enjoyment. Almost every child has taken a trip to the zoo. At the zoo we see different animals in created habitats eating prepared food. A variety of different animals are either captured or born to amuse humans for a profit. The rights of freedom stripped from animals to make us smile are not essential to our survival. Animal’s that are raised outside their natural habitat cannot survive among their fellow species in the wild. The Zoo and the circus are prime examples of animals misuse and abuse. Animals from the zoo and circus would not be able to coexist due the difference in freedom. Less animal attacks would occur as well. Zoo’s and Circus’s argue that they save endangered species and educate the public, but I strongly believe the costs outweigh the benefits, and individual animal’s rights are violated and unjust. Zoos define themselves as bringing people and animals together, as well as educate the public with the appreciation of the animals. This exposure and education motivates people to protect the animals as they believe. Zoos save endangered species by bringing them...

Animal Test

...Opinion paper draft People Should Not Keep Pets More and more people keep pets in recent years. From a broader perspective, people should not keep pets. This paper will clarify four reasons why people should not keep pets. The issue of whether should keep pets has been extensively debated and remains relentless. According to research, there are 29.8 percents of people who keep pets in China, nearly 50 percents of people keep pets in Europe, and almost 60 percents of people keep pets in the United States (Soltanizadeh 83-94). The topic of keeping pets becomes a international topic. With the increase of number of animals kept at home, more and more people stated that people should not keep pets (Soltanizadeh 83-94). In this paper, I will present arguments in support of the topic that people should not keep pets. There are three reasons. Keeping pets not only wastes resources, but also increase the risk of health of the animals and people. And it is a violation of animal rights. My counter argument is people should keep pets because it adds to the quality of life of both the owner and the animal. There are mainly three reasons why people should not keep pets. Firstly, keeping of pets results in a huge drain on resources that could be put to better use. (Rebekah 525-537). For examples, pets are costly to keep in time, money and energy. As well as the cost to owners in food, vet’s bills and the time spent cleaning and exercising. Secondly, keeping pets is...

My Scaly Neighbor, Friend or Foe?

...more exotic than your average cat or dog? It could be simply that you want to embark on a new adventure as a pet owner. What ever your reason maybe, I Think I may have a solution for you. I highly recommend the Bearded Dragon for any first time exotic pet or reptile owner. I have been the proud owner of three beautiful bearded dragons for the past year. At first I was scared to even pick one of them up. Reptiles are not normal pets to most people, so it can be intimidating and overwhelming at first. After getting to know their temperament and behavior, I soon became comfortable in knowing that they meant no harm to me. I learned to look past their rough textured skin and really paid attention to their demeanor. I quickly went from being the owner of one to three bearded dragons in a matter of months. Bearded dragons make great pets for a number of reasons. They are one of the tamest, friendliest reptiles around, compared to the Iguana, whose temperament is unpredictable and can often be aggressive. Reptile owners will agree that if you are new to reptile ownership, the bearded dragon is the best reptile to start off with because of their friendly disposition, hardiness and gentle nature. Bearded Dragons are very friendly and inquisitive, which makes for an interesting interaction between pet and owner. I really enjoy feeding mine their live prey, and watching them run around the house. They have the most curious personalities, using their tongues to research their...

...Phase 1 Individual Project SCI201-1403A-12 Environmental Science and Sustainability July 10, 2014 Trena Woolridge Just to keep the theme going from the discussion board 2 assignment I decided to research and write about the Tropical Rainforest. I have always found the world’s rainforests to be very interesting with all of their secrets they hold inside of them. By doing this paper it will allow me to discover more in-depth information on the Tropical Rainforests. I wonder what all I will discover? There are many rainforests in the world but can be found only in three major geographical areas around the world. The one that stands out the most to me is the Tropical Rainforest in Central America in the Amazon Basin from the previous assignment I researched. Others are located in Africa, Australia, and Assam to name a few. Tropical Rainforests are made up of large trees, exotic wildlife, and thousands of species of plants. The structure of the Tropical Rainforest is very complex but can be simple to understand when broken down into sections. The rainforest can be divided into layers from top to bottom and can get a better understanding of the Tropical Rainforest as a whole. The different layers are: emergent, the canopy, the understory, and the leaf litter or cryptoshere or also known as the ground. Emergent are the larger, taller trees that stick out above the canopy. They can be 20-100 feet above the canopy and endures strong winds, temperature fluctuations, and damaging...

Attraction Research Paper

...Even though humans are not thought of as animals, we as a species still contain certain instincts that date back to the beginning of our existence. One of these instincts is the instinct to mate or to fall in love. So why are we attracted to certain people more so or less so than others? Attraction is thought to be based off of chemistry that occurs within the brain while others believe smell and other senses greatly influence our attraction. But that's not all attraction is based off of. Attraction is separated into two different types; physical, and sexual. Before you learn about those you need to learn what attraction is. So what really is attraction? Attraction is, according to the dictionary, the action or power of evoking interest, pleasure,...

...Simon Gals English 51 April 28, 2008 Research Paper Grade Draft Fading of Black and White In the meadows high in the mountains of central China, various types of animals share the peaceful green jungles filled with endless trees, wild flowers, rivers, and rain fall. Among all the different species of animals that share the jungle, one in particular stands out: the giant panda. The pandas live a peaceful and harmless life high in the remote mountainous regions of central China. The bamboo forests grow high, and are cool and wet—just the way the pandas prefer them to be. Pandas will climb upwards to 13,000 feet (3,962 meters) to feed on the bamboo that grows in their habitat; during the summer seasons, they will venture even higher. Pandas mainly feed on bamboo, but will eat birds or rodents as well. It is in this peaceful bamboo jungle habitat that the giant panda gives birth to and nurtures its young. The Giant Panda is one of the rarest and most exotic animals this world has given birth to. Pandas are mammals; they’re omnivores. The average lifespan in the wild for a healthy Panda is twenty years. The sizes they grow to are four to five feet (one to one and a half meters) tall and weigh upwards to 300 pounds (136 kilograms). In the past few decades the Chinese Giant Pandas have been added to the endangered species list because of their decreasing numbers. The Pandas made the list due to false pregnancies, poachers, poor nurturing, and lack of bamboo growth...

Assessment of Backyard Goat Production and Marketing System in the Municipality of Argao, Cebu

...where the animals are kept in small flocks at an average of 5-10 head/family. While rearing of goat remains at a subsistence level, its contribution to the total farm income is substantial. Goat production fits well in the rural landscape as well as in the resource capacity of smallholder farmers. It requires low initial capital and guarantees a high return on investment in as fast as two years; hence it is an attractive undertaking among rural households (FFTC Annual Report 2009). In recognition of its importance, several advanced technologies have been developed to increase goat production in some countries in the region. Technology improvement widely ranges from reproductive techniques and seasonal breeding, to silage making, agricultural by-product utilization, slotted slat barn facilities and total mix ration. However, most Asian small-scale goat farmers do not have access to these relevant information and advanced technologies for increased outputs, giving them very limited opportunities to improve their production as well as their livelihood. Goats are a most likely alternative source of animal protein, and can efficiently provide meat and milk to complement cattle and buffalo production. Goat raising has become not just for the Asian rural farm households. It has emerged as a popular business option for many affluent entrepreneurs in some Asian countries. Seeing great economic potentials, many have gone into goat raising as a business, with some importing exotic stocks...

Bio-Diversity and Wildlife Threatened

...Abstract The diversification of human induced disturbances upon natural ecosystems has contributed to wildlife habitat fragmentation which has been a serious threat to the survival of natural populations. Possible factors contributing to this decline include changes in food, loss of genetic variation, cover availability, evolution of predation, microclimatic effect, and lack of recolonization following extinctions. Habitat loss and fragmentation are processes that separate small populations, which have higher extinction rates that may lead to a reduction in biological diversity. Recent dramatic declines in forest management have brought some undesirable consequences for forest health and wildlife (Jack Ward, T. (n.d). Standing back and letting nature take its course has become increasingly prevalent. Unfortunately, while appealing as this sounds, this is not tenable in the long-term as it will not protect forests, retain biodiversity, and provide some wood products over time. We are increasingly depending on places beyond our borders to provide our wood places with far less resources and knowledge about how to manage forests responsibly. By importing wood products, we export not only environmental consequences but jobs and dollars ( Jack Ward, T. (n.d). Conservation biology needs to reach out to a much broader community of academics and practitioners in fields as diverse as anthropology, history, political geography, and environmental psychology (Bernstein...

Nonnative Species: Native To The Indio-Pacific Ocean

...A nonnative species is a plant or animal from a foreign region of the world that has established a population in a new area. These alien species may be introduced into an ecosystem through various means. For example, foreign species are most often released into the wild by individuals that have kept them as domestic pets. In addition, they may be transported through ship ballast water or other forms of accidental release. Whereas many species may not be able to survive in foreign conditions, others are able to adapt to new environments (National Ocean Service. Although, nonnative species can be harmless to new environments, harmoniously integrating themselves into the ecosystem, exotic species often cause severe environmental harm becoming “invasive”. An invasive species is an organism that has unbalanced the dynamic of their new habitat. Invasive organisms often exhibit advantageous traits that allow them to over take native populations by depleting food sources and creating unfair competition for mating grounds, habitats, nests, etc (National Ocean Service)....
