There are different ways of learning; studying, practicing, being taught or experience something. During the duration of this course my views of learning has changed. First entering I described learning as absorbing knowledge, which was a simple definition. Now I have a better understanding of what learning is and my learning patterns. My learning scores are sequence 29 (use first), precision 26 (as needed), technical reasoning 17 (avoid) and confluence 21(as needed). When I am learning I like to read through all the text, confirm what is expected of me (sequence). I will imagine and create a blue print of what my project will look like and what information it will have (precision and confluence). After constructing the project, I edit or go over all problems and find solutions to make it work (technical reasoning). To become more of an intentional learner, I had to tether my sequence learning pattern. By not reading all the examples or tables, this gave me more time to intensify my confluence pattern. For this course it was necessary to dig deep and learn about myself as a learner. Confluence and precision helped me brainstorm and get out all of what I was thinking on paper. One can justify the purchase from four perspectives: the improvement in the financial resources of the new owners, the reconsideration of the marketing strategy, targeting and positioning, the forecasted improvement in Steinway piano sales and the short and long-term corporate financial effects. Steinway & Sons should be able to prosper under the new owners in both the short term and long term based on the inherent strength of the brand as the world’s finest piano, the available financial resources and smart marketing. After four generations of family ownership the company suffered from inadequate corporate oversight under CBS and an overly leveraged balance sheet with Birmingham. CBS focused on cost control at the expense of product quality with the expected results. Birmingham knew nothing about the piano business and were so leveraged that much needed investment was impossible to sustain. In the first essay, I propose a dynamic model of corporate earnings management in which investors have different expectations schemes. I find that while earnings management may exist when investors have rational expectations or misspecified Bayesian beliefs, it disappears in the long run of an adaptive learning process. The model also offers ample predictions on the time-series properties of asset prices and return predictabilities. Pierre-Fran¸ois Verhulst was born 200 years ago. After a short biograc phy of P.-F. Verhulst in which the link with the Royal Military Academy in Brussels is emphasized, the early history of the so-called “Logistic Model” is described. The relationship with older growth models is discussed, and the motivation of Verhulst to introduce different kinds of limited growth models is presented. The (re-)discovery of the chaotic behaviour of the discrete version of this logistic model in the late previous century is reminded. We conclude by referring to some generalizations of the logistic model, which were used to describe growth and diffusion processes in the context of technological innovation, and for which the author studied the chaotic behaviour by means of a series of computer experiments, performed in the eighties of last century by means of the then emerging “micro-computer” technology. 1 P.-F.
