...What it means to be an American Americans come from all over the world, they all gather into the country to gain new opportunities and have a second chance at life. One iconic image that I believe shows what being an American is, is George Washington crossing the Delaware. And to be an American, you have to be persistent, proud to serve, and selfless. One of the big factors to being an American is being persistent. When Anzia in American and I was a maid for a home she “left. Not a dollar for all my work.” (p19) After leaving she was desperate to find a job and eventually “Worked on a hard bench with my own kind.”(p19) After refusing to work one day she was fired, and she kept looking for a job that would provide her with enough money...

...What the American Flag Means to Me Having immigrant parents who left their own country to come to a foreign land so they can live the “American Dream” gave them and their future family a better opportunity to live a successful life. As the first American-born generation in my family, my family and I appreciate everything that our country has done for us. The American flag, one of the most prominent symbols of America, waves high and proud as a welcome sign to the world. To me, the American flag means more than just stars and stripes. It symbolizes freedom the United States gives to its citizens, the pride that Americans have towards their country, and the sacrifices soldiers have made to keep the nation safe. When most immigrants think of America, they picture a country where people have the...

...Soldier’s National Cemetery. This speech was delivered during the American Civil War which was really a test of the success of the American Revolution. The Gettysburg Address explains and demonstrates the steps needed to achieve the united goal. The Gettysburg Address reflected his redefined belief that the Civil War was not just a fight to save the Union, but a struggle for freedom and equality for all, an idea that Abraham Lincoln had not championed in the years leading up to the war. Abraham Lincoln believed this nation was built on equality which was also a part of the war but we really wanted to determine whether such a nation could continue to exist on equality. This sacrifice was worthwhile because in the opening line Abraham Lincoln says "Four score and seven years ago,” Lincoln really honored the union’s dead and reminded everyone of the soldier’s sacrifices which was equality, freedom, and national unity. This is what America as a whole should have been built on, but for some reason it is really not. So I sit and think, what really is American Freedom then? American Freedom is having unalienable rights that can never be taken away from you. We as people have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness which I think justifies just what American freedom is. We as people can never have those three rights taken from us no matter what happens in our lives. “God shall have a new birth of freedom,” which means under the supervision of God, America's freedom will be reborn...

...What does Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness Mean to You? The Declaration of Independence is the most important piece of all American historical documents. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness might ring a bell, but for others it’s a whole different story. “Freedom is Intended as a Challenge” by Naomi Wolf mentions in her reading about Thomas Jefferson who was one of the writers of “The Declaration of Independence” had two main ideas which were individually and happiness, the pursuit of happiness. ...Article 1|| Heart Doctor Explains Cholesterol Levels In this artic Dr. Suzanne Steinbaumle (Steinbaum, 2016) explains what cholesterol is, how it affects a female body and the differences between “good” and “bad” cholesterol. Cholesterol comes from two sources: your body and food. Your liver and other cells in your body make about 75 percent of blood cholesterol. The other 25 percent comes from the foods you eat. Cholesterol is only found in animal products. Understanding how cholesterol affects the female body and how females can regulate their good cholesterol and counteract the bad cholesterol will allow doctors to understand the differences between patients that could benefit from using the new drug. The new cholesterol guidelines advise doctors to consider a patient’s overall health in treatment decisions. And that’s why one of the biggest changes in the cholesterol guidelines could lead to more people taking cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins (Steinbaum, 2016). Article 2|| High Cholesterol In this article Dr. Andrew Weil explains the desirable levels of cholesterol, HDL or protective cholesterol, LDL or bad cholesterol and the triglyceride levels: Desirable levels of total cholesterol are 200 mg per deciliter of blood or less; levels between 200 mg/dL and 239 mg/dL are considered borderline high; 240 mg/dL or higher is considered high cholesterol and raises your risk of heart disease to twice what it would be if your total cholesterol were 200 mg/dL or lower...

...Andrew Mendez Professor Arrowsmith HIST-112 December 2, 2013 The Fight for Equality In the 1950's and 1960's there was many inequalities that really held back many people from especially the African Americans to have the right of being just like everyone else. But as well all know the white refused to give those type of right to them. So this is when the African Americans would start to take a stand for one another in a Civil Rights Movement lead by many African American activists such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Eisenhower. These Americans stood up for what they knew was right not only for them but fir the good of their people. Martin Luther King Jr. immediate purpose was to convince Americans across the country to embrace racial equality and to further strengthen the resolve of those already involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Audiences could really embrace these words that Dr. King was saying in his "I Have A Dream" speech. Though audiences' purposes are not as easily summarized to the fact of the racial inequality towards the whites and African Americans. Some at the time may have sought to be inspired by Dr. King. Opponents to racial equality who heard his speech may have listened for the purpose of seeking to find ways to further argue against racial equality. Audiences since then may have used Dr. King's speech to educate or to advocate for other social justice issues. Eisenhower also having to do with acting to those same ideas of inequality...

...Review of Mark Twain’s “How to Tell A Story”: The American humorous story In “How to Tell a Story” by Mark Twain, he attempts to explain how one should tell a “humorous” or funny story. He also goes on about the how an American humorous story differs from a European comic or witty story. Twain explains that when one tells a humorous story, the manner in which the story is told is much more important then the actual content. The humorous story is told gravely and the teller does their best to obscure the fact that there is anything funny about the story. Rambling or a longwinded explanation of irrelevant facts is often used to conceal the “nub” or punch line at the end of the story. Finally, quite possibly the most important characteristic of an American humorous story, the pause that is a recurring feature through out the story. This review will examine how Twain uses these principals in “How to Tell a Story” explaining the art form that is the American humorous story. The first characteristic of how to tell a humorous story is in the teller’s demeanor when telling the story. They must remain serious, straight-faced, dull-witted, etc. as to not lead on to how funny the story may actually be. Twain explains the difference between telling a comic and humorous story with “The Wounded Soldier”. When told as a comic story the reader uses energetic voices to depict different characters and trivial name 2 calling “you mean his head, you booby” (Twain, 13) which brings light...

...Using the material from Item A and elsewhere assess the usefulness of functionalist approaches in explaining crime. (21 Marks) Crime is the act which breaks the criminal laws of society. The functionalists approach to crime and deviance gives us some insight into how society copes with deviant behaviour. However it has limitations for example it only looks at the functions of deviance and not the causes. Durkheim says that to allow social solidarity to occur in society there are two key mechanisms which are socialisation and social control. He states that crime and deviance is inevitable and that it is needed in society as it preforms two positive functions; boundary maintenance and adaption. In Durkheim’s view, the purpose of punishment is to reaffirm society’s shared rules. As it states in Item A the publicity given to crime highlights the boundaries of acceptable behaviour and this reinforces social solidarity through for example court rooms which dramatizes the wrong doing and stigmatises the offender and therefore discourages others from breaking society’s rules. For individuals that want adaption, there must be some scope for them to challenge and change the existing norms and values which is deviance. However, in time there values may give way to a new culture and morality. For example gay marriage would be seen as deviant but in current times it has become less deviant in countries such as the United Kingdom because it has become more popular over the last decade. If...
