...Should the U.S. continue Space Exploration? Should the U.S. continue Space Exploration? Many will say no because we waste too much money on just going to space! However, here's why the U.S. should keep exploring space. One reason why we should keep exploring space is because of innovation. On "5 Essentials Pros and Cons of Space Exploration." Nlcapt.org. Ed. ...| Taxonomy & Evolution Report | Fossils | Biology 1107 | Jennifer | 2/5/2015 | Jennifer Vira Biology 1107 11 February 2015 While exploring a rural region of china that had yet to be explored, we took soil samples and determined that the area we were in was once a desert. Over time it became a tropical rainforest. It then was cut down for farmland fifty years ago. While digging around we found sixteen mammalian skeletons that were closely related. We examined the humerus and femur bones to determine how many species there is and during what time they were around. I expect there to be around three different species with the similar femur to humerus ratio being from the desert and ones with longer femurs to be from the rainforest. We measured the lengths of the femurs and humerus in centimeters. Then we made a table with all fifteen individuals’ femurs and humerus lengths plus a table with the ratio of femurs lengths to humerus lengths. We found the average standard deviation of these measurements and made scatter plot showing humerus length against femur length and a bar graph to represent the femur to humerus length ratios of the species. Lastly carbon dating on five individual skeletons was done to show which species lived during the times between the land was a desert and a rainforest. The table below shows the measurements of the individual skeletons humerus and femur length with the average and standard deviation at the bottom. The scatter plot of this...

...Oren Williams Professor Parker PHI 123 May 01, 2016 Alexander von Humboldt Alexander von Humboldt was a Prussian explorer, who was born in Berlin on the 14th of September, 1769. He was also a naturalist and a Prussian geographer. He had an influential impact on romantic philosophy and science. Humboldt traveled all throughout Latin America exploring and describing what he saw in journals he recorded his notes on. This was also the first time he described his experiences in a scientific point of view. The journals he wrote are now published and cover 21 years of his exploring. Humboldt’s father, Alexander Georg von Humboldt, was a major in the Prussian Army. He married Maria Elisabeth Colomb in 1776. She was a very well educated woman and was also a widow. They had three children, Alexander being the youngest. The father had died in 1799. After his death, their mother was expected to become a civil servant of the Prussian state. Money was involved and left after her death. Alexander took accept ion and it helped him along the way to start his exploration. His passion for travel and exploring was a big thing. He devoted himself to preparation into becoming a scientific explorer. At the University of Hamburg, he studied commerce and foreign languages and also geology at Freiberg University of Mining and Technology. He then graduated from Friedberg and was offered a job as an inspector in Bayreuth. During his period as a mine inspector, Humboldt demonstrated his deep concern...

...Alex E. Woods Dr. Carol Eades Composition and Reading 1 18 February 2014 Rocket History and exploring the future My prewriting strategies I used were, research, and outline. My audience are teenagers and adults. My tone for this essay is being informative. My thesis is, although man has created many things, rockets are one of the greatest creations. My purpose for this essay is to educate people on the history of rockets, and I wanted to express why it is one of the greatest creations man has created. The horse and buggy were used to discover uncharted territories and now we are using rocket to explore the uncharted parts of space. This essay discusses the history of rocket fuel, past explorers of space, and the future opportunities in space. Although man has created many things, rockets are one of the greatest creations. Rocket fuel has changed drastically over many years, the first documented rocket was by the Chinese in the fourteenth century, and its fuel was black powder (“History of rockets- Spread of Rocket Technology”). This was the start of something big. Later in history, in the year 1261, Roger Bacon perfected the formula for the rocket; instead of just using gun powder he added saltpeter, carbon, and sulfur (“History of rockets- Spread of rocket technology”). By perfecting the formula he increased performance by staggering numbers...

...Eddie Rice ART 1030-130742 Art Review 3/15/2016 Time, Space & Matter: Five Installations Exploring Natural Phenomena The following is a review of Jane McFadden’s critique of Time, Space & Matter: Five Installations Exploring Natural Phenomena, written on March 26, 2015. McFadden is currently chair of the humanities and sciences department at the Art Center College of Design. The exhibit is currently on display at the Pasadena Museum of California Art and is curated by Betty Ann Brown. McFadden does make a grand generalization about the exhibit. McFadden begins her critique with the opinion that the exhibit as a whole fails to meet its claim that “re-situating, commenting on, and giving new form to environmental processes and the various histories of human interaction with them.” The main theme of this exhibit is the relationship between man, nature, and where this relationship falls in the grand scheme of existence. Upon further review of the works included in the exhibit, I concluded that I lean towards agreeing with McFadden’s generalization that the exhibit misses the target it was aiming for. McFadden’s explanation of her opinion is very sensible and I find that its accuracy is apparent to the audience. I wouldn’t change much at all about the author’s critique simply because I feel like it was written in a way that’s easy to understand and allows the audience to form a similar opinion. McFadden states that the exhibit has a “the exhibition as a...

...Vernacular Architecture In Africa Changes Over Time Vernacular Architecture in Africa has been vanishing in recent years. In West Africa, as well as the rest of Africa, western materials and construction techniques are rapidly replacing traditional ones. This is true even in the most remote areas Modern methods are seen as “civilized” and a reflection of affluence. Traditional materials and construction techniques have implications of being substandard or “primitive”. As a result, these techniques are not being passed on to future generations. In just a few generations, this part of Africa culture could be only a memory. Documenting these structures and techniques and understanding why these traditional architectural relations work is the goal of this project. A second goal is to demonstrate that traditional materials have the strength, comfort and beauty of modern applications. A change in perception has the potential of supporting a vernacular architecture. Vernacular architecture is the construction and building design of settlements that relate to their contexts and available resources. In his book, Ambe Njoh states ”Vernacular architecture is usually the product of specific climatic cultural, and economic conditions of a particular place.” Many different countries throughout Africa are not fortunate enough to buy building material or they just are not able to get access to any. Many African cultures custom build homes or any other buildings using traditional techniques...

...Part 1 By looking at the psychosocial theory of identity and social identity theory we realize that there is many similarities and differences in how they conceptualise identity. Both theories agree that identity has personal and social aspects. The most noticeable difference is that the psychosocial theory looks at how we achieve our individual identities, whereas Tajfel focuses on how we develop group identities (as cited in Phoenix, 2007, p. 62). Looking at each of the theorists’ biographies shows us how each person’s past has influenced their interests. Erikson’s interest is on core identity and lifelong development whereas the Tajfel’s main interest was on how prejudice is produced through group identity. The two theories have different research methods where Tafel uses an experimental research method to gain objectivity in contrast with Erikson seeking a subjective or insider viewpoint. As a result both theories gather different types of data. We then look at how differently our identities is said to develop in each theory and whether the theories view our identities are fixed or allow for change. Our identity is what makes us unique, it is understood to be our own theory of ourselves and it includes the characteristics and relationships we have with other people (as cited in Phoenix, 2007, p. 47). Erik Erikson (1902-1994) was a psychoanalyst and defined identity as ‘a conscious sense of individual uniqueness, an unconscious striving for continuity and having solidarity...

I discovered all three websites by using the Google search engine in an attempt to corroborate my topic through the World Wide Web. Two of the Three were scholarly articles; one by Florida State University and the other by the Eastern Illinois University; both had multiple citing for correlation between ethnicity, age, sex, and tattoos. The third is a website sponsored by a consulting firm called Burleson consulting whose main goal is to help potential employees advance in the work place despite their body modifications. All three help build the foundation of my investigation into why the body modification industry seems to be booming when other businesses are failing in the present economy, however, they don’t really substantiate my query as to a concrete reason. For the answer to that I know that I will have to do some exploring of my own at my job and possibly some other peoples jobs around town in order to get the answer. I intend to “interview” random people in order to corroborate my...
