“For Phillip, on His Last Night at the Palace” is a short story written by Stuart Nadler in 2012. It’s about an old man who comes to the same restaurant, to eat for him and his dead wife.
The text “For Phillip, on His Last Night at the Palace” is about an old man named Phillip, who every Friday evening, are eating at this restaurant, called ‘Cantonese Palace’. But this is a special evening, because this is the last time the Phillip will eat at ‘Cantonese Palace’, cause the restaurant is about to move to a new place. Every time he comes there, he orders meal for not just him, but also for his dead wife Margene. He also have a special servant called Han, he always treats him well. He is thinking about the first time, he visits the Palace, how things have change since back then. At the end of the evening, Han is giving Phillip a present, a framed photograph of Phillip and his wife; they are young and they are sitting at the ‘Cantonese Palace’. After he helps Phillip out to his car, but before he leaves, he runs back to get the chair he used to sit on in the restaurant , but Phillip are asking for his wife chair, so that is what he gets.
The main character in the story is the old man Phillip. He has lost his wife who is called Margene. Phillip is a man with very specific routines. He has come to the same restaurant, Cantonese Palace, every Friday, were he still comes. And he has done it since the first time he and Margene came there for the first time. But he is also ordering the same meal every time, because of her. All this because of love to his wife. Phillip is a man who loves habits and routines, he likes thing to be the ways they always have been. Just because the city or the people in it change a bit, it is irritating ham. Phillip is also a man, who loved and still loves his wife very much, in the text were Han offer him his chair, Phillips ask for his wife chair instead. That really show love, Margene must have been the one and only. The love of his live. Also when he still want to come to the same restaurant, even when she’s not around anymore.
