...Extra Credit Today I attend a lecture talking about the errors within the focus of the US energy market and the ability to face the challenge of carbon dioxide pollution by Roger Sant. The emissions of carbon dioxide and other long-lived greenhouse gases that build up in the atmosphere endanger the health and welfare of current and future generations by causing climate change and ocean acidification. Long-lived greenhouse gases, which trap heat in the atmosphere, include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases. These gases are produced by a numerous and diverse human activities. Throughout this lecture, I realized that the risks to public health and the environment from climate change are substantial and far-reaching. Lecturer warn that carbon pollution and resulting climate change are expected to lead to more intense hurricanes and storms, heavier and more frequent flooding, increased drought, and more severe wildfires—events that can cause deaths, injuries, and billions of dollars of damage to property and the nation’s infrastructure. Some of these impacts already have been observed. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas pollution leads to more frequent and intense heat waves that increase mortality, especially among the poor and elderly. Other climate change public health concerns raised in the scientific literature include anticipated increases in ground-level ozone pollution, the potential for enhanced spread of some waterborne and pest-related diseases...

...EXTRA CREDIT Molin Cheng After reading these two articles we can see each of them use a different way to improve ethylene yield. The two have the same goal, but also has a conflict theory and each of them have its advantages and disadvantages. First, let’s talk about the article “Oxidative Pyrolysis of Ethane”, which assumes that the effects of the oxygen addition can be beneficial to industrial crack in three manners: decreased residence time or increased throughput, higher severity, or reduced tubeskin temperature and longer coil lifetime. After the experiment, the author gets with that the addition of oxygen increases the ethane conversion. The ethylene yields decrease slightly at the feed oxygen compositions higher than 5mol%, which is the result of a slight decrease in ethylene selectivity and most of the oxygen is converted to CO. Then, a computer modeling simulations showed that the oxygen addition has a large impact on the heat effect of the cracking reaction, that means the residence time can be lowered, the severity of ethane cracking can be further increased and the tubeskin temperatures can be lowered. In brief, the addition of oxygen can increased the ethane conversion and with the heat effect of the cracking reaction we can extended operation cycle time and coil lifetime, however the ethylene yields decrease after the oxygen compositions higher than 5mol% and will generate a lot of CO. Then, we talk about another article “High Selectivities To Ethylene...

...Extra Credit Assignment 2 The world is full of entrepreneurs who have created a business or product that they believed in. The industry of modeling is no different. The article from Forbes.com identifies a plus size woman, Ashley Graham, who created the healthy image of women to be pictured on the front cover of Sport Illustrated Magazine along with her own lingerie line. The article is written by Susan Adams who demonstrated a unique take on the everyday interviewing process which relates to the concepts of interviewing biases that we have discussed in class. The first concept that the article shows is about the business model with a closer look at two of the nine components; value proposition and customer segment. The article not only shows how entrepreneurs’ ideas come in all shapes and sizes but so do their owners. Graham not only is the first plus size woman on the cover of Sports Illustrated, but she has produced her own clothing line that has over $1.6 million in sales. She uses the business model to segment her market and assess the needs and values of her customers. The first step in the business model that I will be examining is the value proposition and how it is all about satisfying the needs of your customers and solving the problems that occur. This concept allows Graham to connect with her customers on a unique level by offering them a clothing/ lingerie line for those women who are plus size. She solves the plus sized women’s problem of finding lingerie by...

...few hours when an older Driver by the name of John asked me to help him take out boxes. When he asked me to take out boxes I felt like since he was older it was only the polite thing to do in that situation. I would soon learn that more favors and request would come from John. When the favors and extra request started coming from older workers, I felt that I was being taken advantage of. This is when I asked my father for advice about when it was okay to say no to older people. He informed me that when you are working everyone should be equal and nobody should get special treatment. He also told me that if someone can’t hold their own then a manager needs to be informed about the situation. Then next time that John asked me to take out boxes I respectfully told him that I have work to do and wouldn’t be able to assist him. When I told him that I felt that I learned a lesson that I will take with me for the rest of my life. Teamwork in the workplace was completely different though. There were some days when my manager would be having a rush of customers before some of us were scheduled to work. He would then call one of us to come in early, and start our shifts before we were supose to. I really didn’t want to come in early, until one day I was on the other side of the table...

...22 July 2014 Invasive Species (EC) Invasive Species In the United States, there are numerous animals that are attacking the forests. Some of these species are classified as “invasive species,” this means the animal is not natural to the habitat, while some invasive species are not a problem, most are. A few species that are attacking the forests are the, Asian Long-Haired Beetle, Emerald Ash Borer, and Mountain Pine Beetle. The Asian Long-Haired Beetle (ALB) is currently found in New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Massachusetts, California, and Ohio. ALB is native to eastern China, Japan and Korea. The species was accidentally introduced into the United States, being first discovered in New York in 1996. Adult ALB can be seen from late spring to fall depending on the climate. The predominant reproductive cycle is one year, with winter most commonly in the larval state. Females chew “oviposition sites” in the bark of trees to lay eggs in. One beetle can lie anywhere from 35 to 90 eggs. Larvae hatch within 10-15 days and tunnel under tree bark and bore into healthy trees, they feed on living tree tissue during spring. After emerging, adult beetles feed on the exterior of trees for 2-3 days and then mate. Adult beetle are active only during summer and early fall, then they perish, living a one-year life cycle. ALB spread by natural means, such as flying. Since adult beetles, and larvae both feed on trees, they cause them to become hollow, and the tree eventually dies. The...

Here, the authors Kim, David; Markham, F Scott; Cangelosi, and Joseph D studied how well the students understood their different majors as well as the business world, also whether or not their understanding affected their expectations of career success. The article also talks about how student’s choices of majors are based on expectations of gainful employment, hope of a more promising career, financial rewards, or personal interest. There are a lot of students who pursue the business degree mainly for job opportunities and high pay following graduation, which is also my case. I do not want my parents to pay a fortune for my education, and ending up with a low salary or job that I do not want. Some gravitate to a particular major because they hear about the wonderful job opportunities and high starting salaries associated with that particular field, or they may be influenced by the quality of instruction. How students choose a business major may reflect their response to the realities of the marketplace. Some students enter college having already a major...

...Bonus: A Tale of Two Cities Summary In the article “A Tale of Two Cities: Distinctiveness Theory and Advertising Effectiveness”, the authors talk about a study that they conducted concerned with advertising and ethnicity. They mention that the overall population of the United States is becoming more and more diverse. They write that “advertisers have not been slow to respond to these cultural trends.” They have realized that “using only majority (white Anglo/European) characters might not be the most effective policy.” They are saying since the overall population is becoming more diverse, it may better to use characters of different ethnicities in commercials to be more effective. The authors wanted to conduct a study to see if distinctiveness theory was true. “Distinctiveness theory implies that the lower proportion of minority group members in the overall population, the more likely that ethically targeted stimuli will be effective (57).” Studies that have been taken earlier tied to marketing and ethnicity includes the Whittler study. In this study, they found that viewers prefer ads using spokespeople of their own racial or ethnic group. Also, they found that “…this preference for the viewer’s own racial/ethnic group appears to be stronger for viewers who more strongly identify with their racial/ethnic group (58).” According to earlier studies, Deshpande and Stayman, hypothesized that consumers who are in a minority in their ethnic situation should be more likely...

...Week 7 Extra Credit Discussion You are a contracting specialist with the government. You are assigned to assist the chief information officer’s team with procuring information technology software and services. You schedule a call with the program specialist who informs you she finds the FAR absolutely confusing and finds no logical organization to it. You indicate you took a course, and it is organized in a logical manner. Explain the organization of the FAR as if you would explain it to the program specialist. I can certainly relate to the concerns of the program specialist! As a non-government employee, the FAR was quite foreign and intimidating to me as well. However, as I have taken a couple courses in contracts and acquisitions, my knowledge regarding the regulations has broadened however honestly I probably haven’t even scratched the surface. However this is what I share with you! The basic set of regulations relating to federal procurement is the FAR. The FAR, which went into effect on April 1, 1984, is the primary set of regulations for all feral executive agencies, unless otherwise excluded. (Feldman, 2013) The Federal Acquisition Regulation is contained within Chapter 1 of Title 48 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Chapter 1 is divided into Subchapters A-H, which encompass Parts 1-53. Each of the 53 parts of the FAR addresses a separate aspect of procurement. The first six parts address general contracting matters, and the next six cover acquisition...

...Extra Credit FN08 Page 27 Exercise 1 Exercise 1: Where do you get your financial advice? Identify all the sources. In what circumstances might you seek a professional financial advisor? There are many circumstances in which one might want to seek the advice of a financial advisor. For example planning for retirement or having inherited money and other assets. It is important to seek a financial advisor especially when your financial circumstances are complicated. I get my financial advice from bankers, CPAs, lawyers, insurance agents, tax advisors, family, friends and teachers. It is important to know where your advisors interests lie and to have an idea of what your financial goals are. Working with a financial advisor prior to retirement is ideal. It is never too early to start saving and make your money work for you. There are many questions that one will need to answer when planning ahead for retirement. “How much do I need to retire?” “Can I afford to retire?” and “Will I run out of money?” Many people are able to track spending, saving and investing on their own. However when questions or decisions become too complicated it is best to seek professional advice. Those who inherit may not have much experience in managing large sums of money or assets. In this case it would wise to seek the help of a financial advisor to help plan for the future. An investment advisor would be appropriate in this case to help make investment decisions that would generate...

Grand/parent or other non expert = NASA’s video explaining the water cycle 3. A professional = "Water Vapor, the Hydrological Cycle, and Climate Change" by Isaac M. Held, Senior Research Scientist, head of Weather and Atmospheric Dynamics Group, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory/NOAA (Princeton, NJ); Lecturer with rank of Professor in the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program, Princeton University. (Lecture presented by Harvard University) Step 3: Teaching the hydrologic cycle, also known as the “water cycle” can be very simple to very complicated. I know when I was in grade school I learned the water cycle mainly from my science teacher, and from these posters that were always posted up around the room. As I got older, and my mom became an elementary teacher, I got ahold of a few of these posters. Me being interested in science and teaching took these home and tried to teach the material to anyone who was willing to listen. My mom has many stories of myself trying to teach her and my grandma the water cycle, solar system, etc. One thing I noticed is that my mom understood everything perfectly, while my grandmother didn’t nor did she care. This experience lead me to come up with what mediums to use to teach a third grade student, a grandparent...

...ANTHROPOLOGY REPORT When I first received the assignment that required me to go to the San Diego Zoo, I wasn’t thrilled in the least. I hadn’t been to the Zoo since I was a very young boy. But, after arriving at the Zoo, on that beautiful Friday morning, I was pleasantly surprised how fun and educational it was to conduct an observation of our absolutely amazing non-human primates! I started my visit by observing the Sumatran Orangutans and the Bornean Orangutans. There were three adult Orangutans in the enclosure. One male, “Satu”, stood four and one half feet tall weighing approximately ninety nine to two hundred and twenty pounds along with his two adult female companions, “Janey” and “Karen”. Both females stood approximately three and one half feet tall weighing approximately, seventy seven to one hundred eleven pounds. The females were clearly much smaller physically than the male and appeared to be much more social than the males as well. While observing the Orangutans, I was able to speak to a Zoo volunteer that gave me general Orangutan information most importantly that the Orangutans are considered to be the smartest of all primates and are categorized as a critically endangered species. The Orangutan that stood out from the others was “Janey”. Janey will be fifty years old this year. She was brought to the San Diego Zoo in 1984 at fifteen years old after living the first fifteen years of her life with a family in England. Janey is extremely interactive...
