...The Effect of Extracurricular Activities Mary J. Houser University of Illinois Abstract This research sought to examine and determine the relationship between a student’s involvement in extracurricular activities and their grade point average. The participation of extracurricular activities is defined as being an active participant or member of a club, sport, musical group, or academic group on a student’s education campus. Research was gathered from a multitude of sources and previous research. The data and research has shown that there is a positive relationship between the two factors; as a student’s involvement increases, so does his or her grade point average. To look at this relationship more closely and exact, the relationship between a student’s involvement in high school athletics and their grade point average was examined. Once again, the research said that there is a positive relationship between the two. This research will also look at why these two things have the type of relationship that they do. It goes into some detail about the factors that cause a student’s grade point average and overall success to rise when he or she is more actively involved in their school’s extracurricular activities. When a student enters high school, the experience of schooling becomes far more than just the academic experience alone. Rather than just having to focus on their schooling, they are immediately exposed to other activities such as clubs, athletic teams, music...

...When I first walked into the ACE (Acute Care for Elderly) unit at Maimonides Medical Center, I was unsure of what to expect. A number of questions ran through my mind simultaneously: Is this the right job for me? Will I be capable of aiding the elderly patients? Will I enjoy what I do? A couple of hours later these questions were largely forgotten as I met the patient in Room 120. The patient in Room 120 was a tiny, elderly lady with mild dementia who had been admitted to the hospital because she was suffering from urinary tract infection. I was there to provide her a safe environment and help her with feeding. As I spent a week with her, I noticed that while her physical condition improved, her spirit remained listless and depressed. The woman accepted her treatment reluctantly even crying or screaming at times at the nursing staff. Assuming that her outbursts might be the result of loneliness rather than confusion, I decided to spend more time with her at the end of each volunteer shift. After I earned her trust, she confided in me her story. She said that she lived alone and had recently lost her husband and son. She felt lonely and had no friends. Realizing that her asocial behavior was the result of deep-seated pain, I gave the best medicine I could offer: my friendship. Just like the patient in Room 120, working in the Geriatrics Department gave me an opportunity to bring care and comfort in the lives of people who need it most. From cutting food into small pieces and feeding...

...Throughout high school I have participated in many extracurricular activities and experiences both through the school and local businesses. These extracurricular activities have taught me life skills and significantly helped me become the person I am today. I've been involved in many activities from a very young age. Since the age of five I participated in multiple sports such as baseball, football, and wrestling. These sports have played a huge role in developing the person I am today. I continued my sports career through my first year of high school, by playing for the baseball team until I sustained my second severe knee injury the first day summer vacation between my freshman and my sophomore year. The knee injury required a complicated surgery...

...examined the effects of extracurricular activities intellectually, academically, physically, and socially. The goal is to show that these activities had a positive impact on students/adolescents. This had been done by searching different reference materials that would be essential for the study. Upon examining and reading all research materials, it becomes clear that extracurricular activities are really helpful for students’ betterment. This research highlights how such activities become so important for students /adolescents like me. Extracurricular Activities have several effects on students’ inter-personal, academic performance and educational attainment, physical, and social development, which make it to be important. The increasing importance of extracurricular activities is evidenced by a number of very definite facts: the amount of space given to the discussion of them in educational journal and magazines; the number of studies and experiments that are being made; the appearance of books in this field ( as what I saw when I searched for reference materials); the inclusion of extracurricular activities in the regular schedule of the school; the allowance of teacher’s time for directing them; and the equipments that is provided for them . However, how can these extracurricular activities affect students to be so important like this? ...Statistical Analysis of Preference of Subject Choice among Grade 6 Students Objective: Several schools (English–mediums) today have a curriculum that consists of three broad ranges of subjects, namely core subjects, extracurricular subjects and co-curricular subjects. The core subjects follow a fixed curriculum and contain the basic subjects such as Math, English & Bangla. The extracurricular and co-curricular subjects on the other hand consist of additional subjects such as Music, Art and Dramaare extracurricular subjects, while Geography, History and Science are co-curricular subjects. While the core subjects are considered compulsory and an imperative component of childhood education, the extracurricular and co-curricular subjects are not necessarily as such. Students may feel that their efforts would be better justified towards a greater focus in extracurricular activities rather than co-curricular activities, and vice-versa. Our objective is to find out whether students prefer extracurricular subjects or co-curricular subjects, in conjunction with the core subjects. Data Source: The primary source of data collection will be through surveying Grade 6 students at schools that follow a curriculum as stated above. The survey will likely be conducted in the first week of December, 2014. We also aim to do some research online to see if any similar literature is available on the topic. Main Variables: The independent variable will be the student’s subject preference, and...

...By Dakota Patrick Do you find yourself bored after school? I believe that all students should participate in an extracurricular activity because they could use that skill in life, staying active, and do if you are bored and have nothing else to do. If you decide to do an extracurricular activity, for example, culinary arts, if you practice that in your time after school you would know how to cook for your family when you are of the age. Or In culinary arts you could be an professional chef who can make amazing meals that go for at least $200 for just one plate. Most professional chefs make a huge fortune by just cooking, and if it’s something you really enjoy, then get paid for doing something you love. If you decide to join the football...

...STUDENT RESUME/ACTIVITY LIST A resume or list of extracurricular activities can go a long way with an admissions committee. Taking the time to add extra components to the application shows conscientious effort on the student's part to create the best possible impression. It is also impressive because it shows that a student is genuinely interested in the school. However, be sure to fill out the application entirely—use the resume to give a deeper picture of where your interests lie. This resume will also help to simplify and bring attention to your scholarship applications. Most students simply create chronological lists of their extracurricular accomplishments. Big mistake! This is a section where you can really set yourself apart from other applicants by employing a little strategy. Anyone can be a member of the Key Club, but not anyone can start an adult literacy program or become the assistant manager at Wayne's Weenie World. The key to making your extracurricular activities stand out within the limited space of the application form is to focus on leadership. But before you can do this, you first need to make a list of all your extracurricular activities, summer activities, and jobs. List everything big and small. Significant and insignificant. Don't forget that extracurricular activities include experiences like teaching all those hyper kids at Sunday School, whacking the ball around on the ping pong team, playing the triangle in band, leading a sit-in against...

...Extracurricular activities are found in all levels of our schools in many different forms. They can be sports, clubs, debate, drama, school publications, student council, and other social events. A student’s future can be determined in the things that they do in the hours after school and before their parents get home. Extracurricular activities are totally voluntary so students that do not want to participate in them do not have to. However, they provide experiences that are not included in formal courses of study. They allow students to apply the knowledge that they have learned in other classes and acquire concepts of democratic life. Extracurricular activities have many positive effects on education. The positive effects that extracurricular activities have on students are behaviour, better grades, school completion, positive aspects to become successful adults, and a social aspect. Extracurricular activities began in the United States in the 19th century. The first extracurricular activities that were well known in schools started at Harvard and Yale University. The first effect that extracurricular activities have on education is behaviour. Students that participate in extracurricular activities have reduced behaviour problems. In sports, they show discipline in drills, practices, and routines. They have a responsibility to perform those tasks correctly, whether it is basketball of football plays, dance routines, or signals in baseball. When students perform these things...
