(A1) The role of a practitioner when a child is preparing for school is to help to create social interactions and develop the child’s confidence. By helping them to develop their independence so they are able to get dressed for PE or going to the toilet without help. The practitioners should promote hygiene by reminding the child to wash their hands after going to the toilet. This should be done by direct instruction instead of doing I for the child as they need to learn this skill. They should be making and developing relationships with new parents and getting them involved at home. This could be by organising home/school visits or visits prior to starting. Practitioners should also be developing self-help skills and concentration, language skills through play and exploration. This will help as the children will soon be transitioning into more formal learning in year 1. The children should be developing strengths in the core areas of the EYFS assessment framework. A key aspect of transitioning is to have developed a clear settling-in policy and share it with parents.
