F. Scott Fitzgerald is in many ways one of the most notable writers of the twentieth century. His prodigious literary voice and style provides remarkable insight into the lifestyles of the rich and famous, as well as himself. Exploring themes such as disillusionment, coming of age, and the corruption of the American Dream, Fitzgerald based most of his subject matter on his own despicable, tragic life experiences. Although he was thought to be the trumpeter of the Jazz Age, he never directly identified himself with it and was adverse to many of its manifestations.

The life of F. Scott Fitzgerald was deeply divided, in that his early successes in the 1910’s and 1920’s contrast noticeably with the years full of personal happenings and self doubt. It was divided, among all, between the pursuit of the artistic ideal and the continual lure of easy success. He became a victim of the myth of success and money instead of the perpetrator. Nevertheless, Fitzgerald’s incredible prose style and beautiful talent shined through his tragic, disillusioned life and he was able to successful create a beautiful world for his readers to escape to.

In the early 1920’s, Fitzgerald was accepted as a symbol of youthful sophistication. He became intensely aware of the strangeness and mystery behind the rich at a young age, and tried so hard to echo their actions through sheen curiosity and characterization. It was then that he established a rich and enduring symbolic value throughout his stories and was led into a dazzling world full of limitless opportunities. Fitzgerald also developed an unusually sharp eye for a character and a scene, an excellent ear for dialogue, and an uncommonly acute sense of time and place.

The Last Tycoon shows how true and delicate Fitzgerald’s feelings for a scene, a character, a situation, and a moment really were. In the scene when Stahr,

As evidence, it provides a brief comment about how his life is intertwine with The Great Gatsby plot and character. Finally, the essay provides the reader the biography of Scott Fitzgerald as representative of the claim. Overall, the writer’s research on Scott Fitzgerald’s novels is poor and doesn’t address the thesis. Thesis A thesis is a statement or a theory that is put forward as a premise to be maintained or proved (Dictionary.com). In this case the thesis is persuasive because the writer chooses one quality of Scott Fitzgerald writing over others that could also describe his writing as the most obviously notable quality. The purpose of the document is to convince the audience that the thesis is a correct statement. In order to convince the audience, the writer needs to provide information that is representative of the claim about the topic (p.358). The thesis suggests that “the biographical element in Fitzgerald’s writing is one of the most obviously notable qualities about his novels”. To prove the statement correct, the writer needs to provide information about Fitzgerald’s novels in relation with his life. In the document only one novel is cited, The Great Gatsby, but there is no specific information about how the novel is related to Fitzgerald’s biography. Although there is little information about Fitzgerald work as a writer, there is a considerable amount...

Gatsby Research Paper

...GT/AP-4 17 January 2013 Research Paper The Great Gatsby was a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925, and has motifs of class separation, the hollowness of the upper class, and the decline of the visions of America. The setting is New York City in the summer of 1922. Nick Carraway moves to New York in hopes of finding a job there. Nick has connections in this town, like his cousin daisy, and her husband, Tom. He moves into a home next to a wealthy Jay Gatsby, an extravagant man who loves throwing ridiculous parties. As the summer progresses, Nick finally gets invited to one of these parties, where he learns Gatsby is in love with Daisy. Nick helps set up Daisy and Gatsby, and they start spending time together. Tom gets angry and ends up driving Gatsby to his unfortunate demise. While a Feminist reading provides insight into the novel, Fitzgerald’s emphasis on the separated classes system and the materialistic beliefs of the upper class demonstrates that a Marxist approach to the novel is of more use. Feminism criticizes the patriarchal language used in novels, and how that reflects the masculinity in the novel (“Feminist Criticism”). Feminism also analyzes how status and positions in the novel relate to the contrasting man and woman. It recognizes more traditional writing, like mailman. Men tend to work towards solutions, while women work towards connecting and feelings (“Feminist Criticism”). It is exemplified in the book when Fitzgerald writes: “She told me it was...

Biography: Ernest Hemingway

...mid-fifties. Two of his siblings also committed suicide (he was one of six). His mother was “cold and domineering,” and some say she emasculated his father. In his adult life, he was married four times, but “When I saw my wife again standing at the tracks as the train came in by the piled logs at the station, I wished I had died before I ever loved anyone but her.” This quote, which I think gives a testament to how beautifully he could write, is speaking of his first wife, Hadley, whom he met and married within a year. They had a son together, but after Hadley was at fault in getting his collection of stories stolen, their relationship wouldn’t recover. When in high school, Hemingway’s love for writing started to show. He wrote for his school paper, and when he graduated he took a job writing for a Newspaper, much at the disdain of his parents, who wanted him to go to college. Around this time World War I broke out, and Ernest Hemingway, being a young man full of energy and adventurousness, wanted to fight for the cause. Accompanying his parents forbidding it, his bad eyesight was a forbearer of the news he would not be...

Love is presented through the use of characters, themes, linguistic, structural and contextual references. That pieces are ‘Romeo and Juliet’ written by William Shakespeare, ‘Sonnet 116’ by William Shakespeare again, ‘Sonnet 43’ by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, ‘Sonnet 130’ by Shakespeare and also ‘Sonnet 18’ again by Shakespeare. They were all written in the time that was considered the Elizabethan Era. A religious theme is set in both Romeo and Juliet and sonnet 43 to convey the attitudes to love. In Romeo and Juliet the theme of religion is used to express their love between each other and suggesting it is similar to religion can impose that it is a life-long commitment and will always be there even if they lose faith. Archetype In The Great Gatsby

...I am doing my research paper on Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby, and the archetype I have chosen is American Dreamer. An American Dreamer is someone who sees the American Dream as an obtainable goal and vigorously pursues it. Jay Gatsby qualifies for the archetype American Dreamer because in his journey to wealth and prosperity he is reunited with a lost love from five years previous, her name is Daisy Buchanan. I am doing my research paper on Jay Gatsby because I have wanted to read this book for some time and I figured who better to do than the main character of the book. F. Scott Fitzgerald created many interesting characters in his novel The Great Gatsby. Jay Gatsby, The main character from The Great Gatsby fits the archetype of the American...

My Writing Experience

...Basically, this woman is already mentally unstable and is forced to stay up in a room with yellow wallpaper. She becomes convinced that she is a woman trapped in the wallpaper which drives her insane and turns her against her husband and his sister. The very fact that it is the color of the walls that drives her crazy is something that I used in my story with the glaring white of the walls and linoleum that caused my protagonist to slip out of reality. Some of the lines that inspired my writing in particular were lines like “I never saw so much expression in an inanimate object before” (Gilman). Also, I used the line “This wall-paper has a kind of sub-pattern in a different shade, a particularly irritating one”...

Personal Narrative: Shitty First Drafts

...world, my passion, and my entertainment. After reading that essay I thought of my favorite author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and wondered how many drafts he had to write before “The Great Gatsby” was complete? I could visualize him sitting at a typewriter and cursing, wondering why his thoughts were not correctly translating on the pages. I found solace in this thought, and with this knowledge I began to write my first assignment on critical literacy and what it meant to me. Before I began writing the first draft of assignments, I would write down every thought that came to me on my topic. From that point, I would search each idea I had in tell my finished notes morphed into an abundance of data. Knowing that I had one idea out of many gave me a security net. Even having a plethora of topics did not ease the struggle of producing an essay. Similar to what Lamott described, writing even one sentence, feels like a North Korean torture tactic. Sadly, this is just the writing portion, this does not even begin to describe the anxiety felt over grammar, proper sentence structure, and correct MLA/APA formatting. When I wrote my summary vs. analysis discussion board topic, it took me over an hour to figure out what the beginning word should be. Shaking with frustration I created a new paper for myself, my honest thoughts pertaining to the “Dirt and Noise” blog. Eventually, I wrote the dumbest paper possible, I described how any mother who frets over small issues, like gender specific toys, has...

Interpretation of the American Dream in the Jungle, the Great Gatsby and Death of a Salesman

...United States of America underwent large scale change and by the start of the twentieth century was one of the richest nations in the world. By 1950 the U.S.A. was the richest country in the world and a superpower. The state was not the only thing to change during this period. From the late-nineteenth century up to the 1920s average Americans experienced a dramatic expansion in wealth and prosperity. However, with the Wall Street Crash in 1929 the U.S.A. experienced an economic depression that destroyed millions of livelihoods. This eventful period of American history led many to question the American Dreams place in modern America. This research paper will examine the interpretation of the American Dream in literature between the Progressive Era at the start of the twentieth century and the 1950s economic and social boom. In order to do this the paper will examine the novels The Jungle, The Great Gatsby and Death of a Salesman. These three novels all examine the American Dream in different decades. Written in 1906 by Upton Sinclair The Jungle is a novel that portrayed the life of immigrants and the working class in early-twentieth century America. The novel was published during the muckraking decade and its depiction of poverty, unpleasant living and working conditions and the corruption of those in power led it to be called “the Uncle Tom’s Cabin of wage slavery.” A socialist Sinclair believed that by the start of the twentieth...

To provide context for the analysis, a history of DSS is presented which focuses on the evolution of a number of sub-groupings of research and practice: personal DSS, group support systems, negotiation support systems, intelligent DSS, knowledge management-based DSS, executive information systems/business intelligence, and data warehousing. To understand the state of DSS research an empirical investigation of published DSS research is presented. This investigation is based on the detailed analysis of 1,020 DSS articles published in 14 major journals from 1990 to 2003. The analysis found that DSS publication has been falling steadily since its peak in 1994 and the current publication rate is at early 1990s levels. Other findings include that personal DSS and group support systems dominate research activity and data warehousing is the least published type of DSS. The journal DSS is the major publishing outlet;...
