With a research question as broad as ours, we thought it best to have as much statistical evidence as possible. As a group we decided that a survey would ultimately render us the most answers, and we set a goal of reaching out to 100 subjects. The survey was sent to the entire Cultural Anthropology class, and each member of the group sent the survey to their respective friend groups and sorority pledge classes (all students at KU). In total, 104 subjects participated.
The survey was perfect for getting a general overview of everyone’s insecurities, but we felt that it would be additionally helpful to personally interview people, to better understand the root of their insecurities, and how they affect their lives. We decided it would be best …show more content…
It asked these questions in this order. 1. Are you typically more self conscious about facial or bodily features? Response: Facial 17%, Bodily 67%, Both 16%. Our analysis of these results is that students are, by far, more self conscious about their bodies. 2. What facial characteristics are you most self conscious about? Response: Skin 28%, Eyes 5%, Hair 6%, Nose 20%, Lips: 2%, Ears 5%, Teeth 13%, Facial structure 14%, Facial hair 5%, None 2%. Our analysis of these results was that nose and skin is the most common. These results are very plausible considering that skin is problematic for college age students and nose jobs are one of the most common plastic surgery procedures in the United States. 3. What bodily feature are you most self conscious about? Response: Arms 6.06%, Shoulders 1.01%, Chest 3.03%, Back 3.03%, Thighs 11.11%, Calves 1.01%, Feet 1.01%, Hands 0%, Midsection 65.66%, None 4.04%, Other: 4.04% (three responded “butt”, one answered hair on body). Analysis: midsection is, by far, the most commonly stated bodily feature. This result was not surprising. 4. How do you attempt to hide these perceived imperfections? Clothing 89.69%, Makeup 45.36%, Posture 34.02% other: 2 responses, “I don’t try to hide them at all” and “workout”. These results again the tendency to be self conscious about the

The Gene Behind Your Graying Hair

...identify the genes behind gray hair, curly hair, beard thickness, and the humble monobrow. Some genes decide the color of your hair, while other, considerably less friendly genes influence whether or not you go bald. Now, a University College London study has identified the DNA behind gray hair, curly hair, beard thickness, and even the humble monobrow. The researchers say their results confirm long-held suspicions nursed by unmarried aunts — going gray simply runs in the family. We humans have lost most of our body hair over time, yet the abundance of head hair we’ve managed to retain throughout our evolution varies tremendously from individual to individual, and not just among those who regularly drop a Benjamin at the salon. According to the researchers, the appearance of our hair is mostly an inheritance game as evidenced by the obvious differences appearing on different continents. For example, straight hair is virtually absent from sub-Saharan Africa, while variable hair color is mostly found in West Eurasia. “Interestingly, different genes have been associated with straight hair in Europeans and East Asians, suggesting that this trait evolved independently at least twice,” wrote the team of researchers led by Dr. Kaustubh Adhikari Hair Diversity Adhikari, of UCL’s cell and developmental biology department, and his co-authors analyzed 6,357 people with varied ancestry across Latin America to identify new genes associated with hair color, greying, density, and...

Differences Men and Women

...requirements. Razors for women are designed to take care of their delicate skin around the shin bone of the leg, plus the area around the knee and the calf. While men’s razors are designed simply to get their hair from the beard removed. Men’s shavers enable them to easily shave under and around the nose and lip without worrying about cuts or nicks. Likewise, women’s shavers help them get rid of the tiny hair after waxing that grows pretty fast. Read through the following lines to find out the difference between men and women shavers.   Women Vs Men Razors * Men’s razors are typically masculine and straightforward. Women’s shaving products, on the other hand, are of a softer shade and offer a larger and more comfortable handle. * Men’s shavers have a straight handle. Conversely, women’s shavers have a longer handle for a longer reach or a paddle-shaped handle to allow for a lengthwise grip. You can also find specialized handle designs for shaving areas, such as the underarms or the bikini line. * Although women’s razors offer a smooth shave, they don’t leave you with that “close-shave” feeling for a long time. This happens because women’s razors are designed specially to gently glide over a wide area of thin hair. Contrarily, men’s razors pluck thicker hair from a smaller area. * Today, men’s razors have more blades than their female counterparts. While additional blades have been basically added...

...Coconut Oil and Calamansi Peelings As Agent for Hair Oil Chapter I. Introduction A. Background Of the Study The hair is our crowning glory that holds true for most people since it is one of the things that leave a lasting impression when we first meet someone. The way that we carry our hair, our haircut, our hairstyle and even hair texture are all visible traits that can greatly affect the way that other people look at you. This is the reason why we need to take extra care of our hair. Our hair and scalp, just like our skin needs special care and attention. One way of caring our hair is by using hair oil. We can directly find them in our kitchen, etc. Calamansi peelings contain a preservative called Pectin that is generally used in preserving jams and jellies. In this study, we commonly use the extract of calamansi peelings which has pectin to preserve the fragrance of the coconut oil and which at the same time gives an additional fragrance to the oil. This study employs the importance of this experiment to our economy in the country. B. Statement of the Problem This study will determine the feasibility...

...use number one or number two depending on the height you want the hair to have. The hair very short and it creates a look that can be mistaken for hair that is just starting to grow. Zero Buzz Cut This cut is known as the zero buzz cut as it is created when the Clippers are set at level zero, and the aim of the haircut is to reduce the hair to a very low level, but this is not balding. Most people often confuse it with a smooth shave, and it takes a lot of skills to cut it without creating a balding effect. How to Do the Buzz Cut If you have long locks the first step in creating the buzz cut will be to cut them with the scissors but make sure you leave a couple of inches as the clippers will do the rest. Before u start with the clippers, you should first determine the length that you want and the appearance that you wish to have so as to choose a suitable number. Once this is figured out, you should start with the sides and back and finish with the top. Clippers are very comfortable to use, but only a skilled barber can give you a perfectly buzzed out haircut. Different Variations of This...

Pcos

...PCOS, diabetes and irregular periods. It is also suspected to be hereditary from either paternal or maternal sides of the family. How is PCOS diagnosed? During a physical examination a physician will look for signs of PCOS such as extra body hair and high blood pressure. They will also check weight and height as well as lab test to measure blood sugar, insulin and other hormone levels. These test help rule out thyroid and other glandular problems that have similar symptoms. One may also have a pelvic ultrasound to look for cysts on your ovaries. Your doctor may be able to tell you that you have PCOS without an ultrasound, but this test will help him or her rule out other problems. How is it treated? It can also help you lose weight if you need to. If you smoke, consider quitting. Myself

...with our family. He loves to be snuggled close. If a lap is not available, he likes to burrow under a blanket next to me. Not only does Blitz like to cuddle, but he can be very entertaining. A squeaky toy in the form of an animal or ball is a huge source of fun and joy for him. A favorite toy would be his stuffed hedgehog. He is very clever and has learned to anticipate our every move while playing. Tugging on the toy while we desperately try to cling to it is one of his favorite past times. Easy maintenance is especially important when considering the greatest dog. Having a small dog saves time during baths as there is less surface area to cover than with a large, hairy dog. Since Blitz has short hair, when he sheds, it is minimal. If hair is spotted on the couch, it simply looks like eyelashes scattered about. This results in easy clean up. The best example of why Blitz is the greatest dog is the way he loves his family. Not only is he faithful to me as his master, but he is faithful to the rest of the family as well. He is ecstatic to see each of us when we walk in the door. The very first moment we step foot in the house is filled with yips of happiness, endless tail wagging, and jumping for joy; causing us to feel as if we are the most important part of his life. When Blitz is with us, our family unit feels complete. What more could you ask for from a small, four legged, furry friend? I can’t imagine a...

The Legend Of Frigglish

...Frigglish bothered his beard, as if unkinking a hitch in a long silk windsock. A more pedestrian audience would parse the exhibit as nervous compulsion. Behavior to petition contempt among the reasonable. He was however not surrounded by the reasonable, but the wise, a distinction in men that would forever be the difference in history's garland of treasured follies. As a matter of fact, his cadre of fellow wizards were all putting similar moves on their beards as well. The practice would evince thoughtfulness - sagacity, even - if they didn't do it all the time. Standing in line at the bank. Shooing squirrels from bird feeders. Few occasions were safe. Zazzerpan inspected the clue. A single piece of evidence cradled in his coriaceous old man palms. It was a human bone, not striking in the tale it told alone so much as that told by the thousands like it festooning the marshy soil of the mass grave. The grisly expanse bore the texture of a decadent dessert, like one of Smarny's formidable custard trifles wobbled out on wheels for the holidays, to the dismay of a small nation. "You're certain of this?" asked Frigglish. Despite what he was doing with his beard, he was, in fact, immersed in meaningful contemplation. "I am afraid I am becoming more so with each terrible tick groused by that gaudy timepiece slung around your neck." In case it wasn't clear, Frigglish wore a clock Zazzerpan didn't care for. It was magic. "The massacre of Syrs Gnelph was not as written." "What...

...right now and has been for the last couple of years is BEARDS. Beards have become socially more accepted as much as tattoos have become. Of course, there are a few people out there who object to the idea of either. The biggest product out there being used by the beard community is beard oil. What is beard oil? Beard oil is a product made to moisturize and hydrate the hair and skin. You know when you have a dry scalp, it's itchy, and irritated? Well with facial hair your skin underneath is sensitive and can definitely have the same problem. Using the same products you use for the hair on top of your head is a big no no.
