Good Reader/Bad Reader C.S. Lewis explains the differences between good and bad readers best in his book on An Experiment in Criticism. Here is a paraphrase:

Bad Readers Read only once and move onto the next. Though they may read often they can take it or leave it and will quickly abandon reading for the next thing that comes along. When they have finished a book nothing, if anything at all seems to have transpired. They are ready to move onto the next. Seldom reflect at all on what they read.

Never read beyond the non-narrative. Their interests are purely by events in the plot. Something must always be happening and they have no patience for internal dialogue, character development, or descriptive passages. Cannot differentiate between good and bad style. Good style with strong descriptive elements seems to put them off Enjoys only vicarious happiness or some kind of escapism. Use books as assistance to your own preconceived ideas.

Good Readers Read many times over and over revisiting book over the course of a lifetime. Always looking for a chance to read more and feel impoverished when they have been denied the opportunity over time. The first encounter with a new work is often a deeply moving encounter that leaves the reader changed in some way. “They have become what they were not before”. What they read is constantly on the frontal lobe of a good reader. They quote lines and reflect on particular moments. Scenes and characters provide a kind of iconography by which they can interpret their own experiences Good readers savor every aspect of their reading encounter be it poetic interludes or winding scene descriptions.

Enjoys the execution of a well crafted style as well as part and parcel to the content of the work. Embraces the fullness of experience the piece has to offer. Receive books as a means to exert your senses and imagination and intellect

Nobleza 10 Diamond S/Y 2015 - 2016 CHAPTER 1 Introduction Education is the process of facilitating learning. Knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits of a group of people are transferred to other people, through storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, or research. Education began in the earliest prehistory, as adults trained the young in the knowledge and skills deemed necessary in their society. Education is said to be the key to our future, because education can help a person to succeed in life. You have to study hard, pursue and pass the exams for you to get the diploma that you’ve been waiting for. This kind of view is only for college students, not for high school students. Why? Because being a high school student is very different, they are not so focused on their studies because of the fact that they are still young so they think there still a lot of time for that kind of things. There are a lot of things why being a high school student is different, there are so many reasons why high school students don’t get high grades, and there are several negative factors affecting the academic performance of high school students. This observation prompted the researcher to create a study that will help students, teachers, parents and the...

Reading Attitudes of Students

...CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Success in academics, career, transactions and all the struggles people face in the different aspects of their daily lives could only be attained if proper attitude was present. How to approach or avoid the problems, challenges and circumstances they faced every day predicted the result. The same idea was shared by Hilary Hinton Ziglar (2011) which stated that it is not what happens to you that determines how far you will go in life; it is how you handle what happens to you. Even if a lot of challenges were given to men, this does not define one’s final outcome. It was one’s attitude towards the challenge that predicted and established their future. However, not all people nowadays knew how to face properly each circumstance offered by life and thus ended in catastrophic situations. This same problem is faced by students of the present generation especially in their academics wherein reading is mostly valuable. This study was concerned with the decline of the students engaging in reading. How did they acquired knowledge and information? What were their approaches in acquiring knowledge? Did they really understand what they had recently gathered? Reading is not only confined in the four walls of classrooms but more importantly used in different jobs and professions. Reading, together with writing was a useful tool in communication from the time of the ancient Egyptians and Chinese. In the age of the Internet and information...

Supply Versus Demand Literature Review

...Student Name: Instructors Name: Date: Supply vs Demand Abstract Supply and demand are two important concepts in a marketplace. These concepts are dynamic and vary from market to market. The objective of this paper is to compare and contrast the supply and demand concepts based on available scholar material. The comparison involves reviewing the literature material under the definitions of demand and supply; the relationship between supply and demand; the effect of supply and demand on the market; and the factors affecting demand and supply in the United States of America. The review uses book materials in economics including the classical economics. Definition of demand and supply The demand in economics is defined as the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to purchase at a given price during a given period of time, (Richard Ely, 1919). In economics, demand is greater than a desire to purchase. Richard argues that a beggar, for instance, may desire a good house, but due to lack of money to pay for the house, the demand becomes ineffective. Such a demand has no purchasing power. Thus, demand in a market is dependent on desire, affordability and willingness to purchase. Supply is defined as the number of goods and services that the seller is willing to sell at a given price, (Richard Ely, 1919). Richard clearly states that supply is seller-centered. Like the demand concept, supply depends on the availability of goods, the price of the goods...

A Critical Review of Corruption and the Watchdog Role of the News Media by Sheila Coronel

...A Critical Review of Corruption and the Watchdog Role of the News Media by Sheila Coronel Introduction In Corruption and the Watchdog Role of the News Media, Sheila Coronel presents the role of media as a watchdog to keep the government in check. Coronel also examines the actual situation of the “watchdogging” by the media including its vulnerabilities to certain factors such as globalization, deregulation, economic impact, culture and many more. She presents the scenario in a form of research in which she shares her arguments and analysis as a veteran investigative journalist. This paper will review Coronel’s research as well as her primary arguments including her policy recommendations, and will evaluate the quality of Coronel’s research, writing, and focus. Summary Coronel begins his paper by reviewing the general premise of media as a watchdog of the society in monitoring government and exposing its excesses. She presents evidences on the retraction of this role around the world thanks to “globalization, the fall of authoritarian and socialist regimes, and the deregulation of the media worldwide.” To ponder on the watchdog role of media, Coronel asks the following important questions: Is the press acting as watchdog always desirable? In countries where the media are hobbled by draconian state restrictions or driven largely by the imperatives of profit-obsessed markets, is such a role even possible? What enabling conditions make a watchdog press...

Gmat Awa

...they will have to as well lower the price to bring back readers as well as sales of advertising spaces. Although the argument may well have merit, the publisher presents a poorly reasoned argument, based on several questionable premises and assumptions, so we cannot accept his argument as valid. The primary issue with the publisher’s reasoning lies in his unsubstantiated premises. He attributes the paper’s declining circulation to solely one of the competitors advantage, failing to discuss other factors that may have also been affecting the situation. Even if The Mercury loses readers mainly because of the competitor, which implies the newspaper has failed to create loyal readers, the problem may also be the quality of the news content. Moreover, the publisher does not consider the result of reducing price, which may also lower the profit margin and further cause difficulty in continuing encouraging the circulation by such means. If it is truly the best way to do so as the publisher argues, the newspaper would need to clearly explain the strategy considering the aspects discussed above to be more convincing. In addition, the publisher makes assumptions remaining unproven that cannot link between the evidence and conclusion. The business assumes the readers choose newspaper merely based price instead of other considerations, such as quality of content or availability. Even if the publisher is convinced that readers care the most about price, it weakens the argument by making...

New York Times Paywall

...Paywall is the new system introduced by The New York Times in September 2011 that prevents internet users from accessing news articles without a subscription. The paywall used by The Times is a „soft“ paywall which means that users are able to see some content (20 articles per month) and after they reach the limit, they must pay to access more content. The paywall proved to be a successful endeavor for The Times in the short run, because in only 2 months they managed to get 390 000 subscribers, which assured them a new source of revenue. In addition to these subscriptions, 70% of The Times subscribers to the print version registered for the online subscription as well. Long term success of the project was still in question due to many factors affecting the online subscriptions, such as availability of other sources of news, willingness of other big news providers to offer content for free and new emerging technologies that affect the way users read content online, like smartphones and tablets. In spite of that, the confidence of The Times publisher in their new payment system is evident in the fact that shortly after the success of this project they introduced the same system for another famous publication in their group: The Boston globe. Other news publications that tried this model have had positive, as well as negative, experiences with it. WSJ has managed to keep its superior position in the news provider industry despite its paywall, while the The Times of London had a drop...

Book Review

...written by Jim Collins. It is a management book which describes how companies change from being the normal average companies to being greater than they anticipated while others do not go through that transition. It is one of the most successful books published for businesses. The title itself gives the reader the summary of what to expect; how to change a good company into a great company. It is clear to see how the author has mastered the art of writing a captivating management book. He uses various methods to do this ensuring the reader keeps turning the pages. The book has a lot of charts and visuals to further bring out the message he is explaining. He uses metaphors in many parts of the book to explain simple concepts like ‘get the right people in the bus, they have to be in the right seats then the bus connotes movement (Collins)’ instead of that he could have just said ‘hire good people.’ This is what separates this business book from the rest. He also focused more on the lists which one should stop doing rather than the common to do lists. Collins also gives researched information with proof to his readers giving examples of companies thus making it believable to the readers. Before the writing of the book, a research team of over 25 people headed by Jim Collins was done in five years. They aimed on getting data of revenues and stock values of companies which had great results and others which were average. They did extensive interviews with the employees and employers...
