...Introduction Unsurprisingly, English is the second most spoken language after Mandarin. To add on to this fact, more people can easily communicate in English compared to any other language. Undoubtedly, the popularity of the language has termed English as the international language of diplomacy, business, science, technology, banking, computing, medicine, aviation, engineering, tourism, and even the UN & NATO armed forces, Hollywood films and the best pop and rock music of the world. Apart from these unfamiliar and strange facts, there are still several other reasons that state the importance of learning the universal language, English. To cite some of them, they are as follows: After graduating high school, if a student is seeking admission in a reputable college or university, one must be very knowledgeable in English, otherwise he/she won’t be admitted. And if after finishing college he would then apply for a job but most companies welcome those candidates who are fluent in English and have the relevant qualification and skill set. Berhanu2 1University of the Punjab, Pakistan 2University of Gothenburg, Sweden ABSTRACT This study was conducted to examine different factors influencing the academic performance of secondary school students in a metropolitan city of Pakistan. The respondents for this study were 10th grade students (300 male & 300 female). A survey was conducted by using a questionnaire for information gathering about different factors relating to academic performance of students. The academic performance was gauged by the result of their 9th grade annual examination. Standard t-test and ANOVA were applied to investigate the effect of different factors on students’ achievement. The results of the study revealed that socioeconomic status (SES) and parents’ education have a significant effect on students’ overall academic achievement as well as achievement in the subjects of Mathematics and English. The high and average socio-economic level affects the performance more than the lower level. It is very interesting that parents’ education means more than their occupation in relation to their children’s academic performance at school. The variables under consideration were the academic performance (student’s grades/marks) as a dependent variable and the gender, age, faculty of study, schooling, father/guardian social economic status, and residential area, medium of schooling; tuition trend, daily study hours and accommodation trend were independent variables. The data were collected from 100 students through separate structured questionnaire from different departments of Islamia University of Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan Campus using the simple random sampling technique. For analysis, linear regression model, correlation analysis, and descriptive analysis were used. The findings revealed that age, father/guardian social economic status and daily study hours significantly contribute the academic performance of graduate students. Students at KFUPM in Saudi Arabia were surveyed to determine what they consider to be the major obstacles to successfully completing the two required courses in Principles of Accounting. The students were categorized as either accounting majors or non-accounting majors and were offered 26 potential obstacles plus one open-ended question. The study showed that the most significant obstacle was the negative attitude of students towards accounting as a difficult subject. Differences in responses of the two student groups occurred for only three of the listed obstacles, none of which were considered significant by either group. There was no correlation between the GPAs of the respondents and their views on the 26 obstacles. A comparison of the findings of this study and those of previous research is also discussed.
