...Stress is a common element in the lives of every individual, regardless of race or cultural background (Garrett, 2007). It is always present among individuals. Stress produces a physical reaction in the body that can make it harder to focus, sleep, and do well academically. Recurrent physical and psychological stress can diminish self-esteem, decrease interpersonal and academic effectiveness, and create a cycle of self-blame and self-doubt. For us students, we are usually experiencing stress whenever our projects are given by our professors at the same time, difficult lessons, home works, family problems, etc. Compensatory reactions occur to ensure the muscles and vital organs have an ample supply of oxygen, energy and nutrients to handle the challenging situation (Nathan, 2008). In addition, Nathan (2008) also states that prolonged and severe stress may be psychologically damaging in that it may hinder a person's ability to engage in effective behavior. Some personal conditions are disability of a person. Problems with visual and auditory processing, memory, and attention are associated with academic achievement problems. Difficulties in listening, speaking, reading comprehension, word recognition, spelling, and writing all comprise the more general category of language disorders. Dyslexia is a subcategory found within a specific population of individuals with learning disabilities. It is believed to be caused by neurological differences within the brain (Kirk, Gallagher...

...ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF HOSPITALITY STUDENTS OF CAVITE STATE UNIVERSITY- SILANG CAMPUS Mark Anthony S. Gato Janna Gold D. Lagura An undergraduate research proposal submitted to the Faculty of Cavite State University- Silang Campus in Partial fulfilment of the requirements for graduation for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management. To be prepared under the supervision of Mr. Rizalito B. Javier. INTRODUCTION Hospitality industry is a broad category of fields within the service industry that includes lodging, restaurant, event planning, theme parks, transportation, cruise line, and additional fields within the tourism industry (Bieber et al, 2011) The fact that some students with apparently high scholastics aptitude do very poorly in tertiary school while others with only mediocre ability do very well has presented a challenge to many educators. It has been observed that hard working students with high IQs sometimes do not perform as well as their classmates with lower IQs (Harvey, 2003) Academic performance is generally refers to how will a student can accomplishing his or her task or studies, but there quite a number of factors that determine the level and quality of students’ academic performance (Bell, 2008). According to Swagman (2011), she stated that the U.S education system stacks up against other countries on the PISA international...

...Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING Introduction This research deals on the common factors that affect the study of BEED-2ND year students and their academic performance. These factors are the problem of the 2nd year BEED students in their studies. It has been an interplay of so many factors on gender, IQ, study habits, age, year level, parents educational attainment, social status, numbers of sibling and etc. This research focuses on the factors that affect the studies of BEED-2nd year students and their academic performance. These factors can help students on how to face these problems in their studies. This study also can help the parents and the teachers understand the problem of their students. Furthermore, this research helps us as a future teacher because if we know the problem of our students we can understand them clearly especially on financial aspect. Theoretical Framework One of the problems that besets our educational system is poor study habits several studies found this problem challenging and therefore, efforts have to be exerted in order to determine the root cause. According to Lass and Wilson(1965), students fails not because they do not have intelligence to understand why they are studying, not because their lesson are too difficult for them but because they do not know how to study or understand what study means. Students failure in his academic subject may not be to lack of intellectual capacity, but perhaps it may be due to negative attitude...

...college students, sometimes they need longer time because of library research and extracurricular activities. (Molmisa, 2011) If the students spend more time in school than at home they should learn much from school. But why does some student get failing grade and some get passing grade? The student’s performance or academic achievement plays an important role in producing the best quality graduates who will become great leader and manpower for the country’s economic and social development. (Ali et.al, 2009) This research will be conducted to find out what affects student’s academic performance. The focus of this research is how student’s performance is affected by factors. Student’s performance is affected due to social, psychological, economic, environmental and personal factors. ... 2011, Page 01 ‐ 14 FACTORS AFFECTING STUDENTS’ QUALITY OF ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: A CASE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL LEVEL M.S. Farooq1, A.H. Chaudhry1, M. Shafiq1, G. Berhanu2 1University of the Punjab, Pakistan 2University of Gothenburg, Sweden ABSTRACT This study was conducted to examine different factors influencing the academic performance of secondary school students in a metropolitan city of Pakistan. The respondents for this study were 10th grade students (300 male & 300 female). A survey was conducted by using a questionnaire for information gathering about different factors relating to academic performance of students. The academic performance was gauged by the result of their 9th grade annual examination. Standard t-test and ANOVA were applied to investigate the effect of different factors on students’ achievement. The results of the study revealed that socioeconomic status (SES) and parents’ education have a significant effect on students’ overall academic achievement as well as achievement in the subjects of Mathematics and English. The high and average socio-economic level affects the performance more than the lower level. It is very interesting that parents’ education means more than their occupation in relation to their children’s academic performance at school. It was found that girls perform better than the male students. Keywords: Quality performance, achievement, socioeconomic demographic factors, gender and academic achievement. status...

...A CASE STUDY OF SCHOOL - RELATED FACTORS AFFECTING NIGERIAN SECONDARY SCHOOL PUPILS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE By Dr. Olaniyi Bojuwoye ABSTRACT A ten-item questionnaire containing various descriptions of school-related characteristic which have been found to adversely affect pupils academic performance was administered on 809 teachers and 1012 students of secondary schools from ten randomly selected states in Nigeria. The respondents ranked the characteristics in terms of their degree of effect on pupil academic performance. The result showed that lack of resource materials for teaching, instructional strategies, teacher shortages and teachers’ attitude to work were rated more highly than other characteristics. The result further showed that while the teachers considered lack of resource materials for teaching as having the greatest degree of effect on pupils academic performance, the students on the other hand considered poor instructional strategies as having the greatest degree of effect on pupil academic performance. Tissington2* 2 Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia, Arkansas, USA. th University of West Florida, 1732 N. 13 Avenue Pensacola, Florida 32503, USA. Accepted 12 May, 2011 Poverty, which forms a specific culture and way of life, is a growing issue in the United States. The number of Americans living in poverty is continually increasing. Poverty indicates the extent to which an individual does without resources. Resources can include financial, emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical resources as well as support systems, relationships, role models, and knowledge of hidden rules. Poverty directly affects academic achievement due to the lack of resources available for student success. Low achievement is closely correlated with lack of resources, and numerous studies have documented the correlation between low socioeconomic status and low achievement. Several strategies exist to assist teachers in closing the poverty achievement gap for students. Key words: Poverty, family income, achievement gap, academic gap. INTRODUCTION In the United States (US), the gaps in achievement among poor and advantaged students are substantial (Rowan et al., 2004). Through multiple studies, The U.S. Department of Education (2001: 8) has indicated results...
