...contemporary society than Biology has”. Man, probably was a biologist before he was anything else, his own health body in health and illness, the phenomena of birth, growth, and death of the plants and other animals that give him food, shelter and clothing undoubtedly were matters of serious concern to man then and even now. Biology is intimately connected to daily life and everybody’s life-long planning. Shut out Biology from daily life and civilization comes to a standstill. It is in the light of this, that the research seeks to build and elicit among students and teachers the proper appreciation and interest in the value of Biology to the individual and to the society at large. This subject Biology, occupies a very important position in senior secondary school level curriculum. ...effect of students socio-economic/family background on students academic performance in tertiary institutions using decision tree algorithms A. B. Adeyemo (Ph.D)1 and S. O. Kuyoro (M.Sc.)2 Department of Computer Science, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria Abstract The causes of the difference in the academic performance of students in tertiary institutions has for a long time been the focus of study among higher education managers, parents, government and researchers. The cause of this differential can be due to intellective, non-intellective factors or both. From studies investigating student performance and related problems it has been determined that academic success is dependent on many factors such as; grades and achievements, personality and expectations, and academic environments. This work uses data mining techniques to investigate the effect of socio-economic or family background on the performance of students using the data from one of the Nigerian tertiary institutions as case study. The analysis was carried out using Decision Tree algorithms. The data comprised of two hundred forty (240) records of students. The academic performance of students was measured by the students’ first year cumulative grade point average (CGPA). Various Decision Tree algorithms were investigated and the algorithm which best models the data was used to generate rule sets which can be used to analyze the effect of the socio-economic background of students on their academic performance. The rules...

...In Nigeria, there are so many factors influencing the ability of students to cultivate effective and efficient study habit. (Ozmer 2005) emphasized the importance of environmental influence as a major factor in the development of students studying habit and academic performance. .NCAA Division I athletic programs are usually the largest and best funded. Many of the student-athletes receive full or partial scholarships. NCAA Division I programs also have high regional, and often high national, visibility. Athletes in these programs face a great deal of public scrutiny. These are usually high-power programs and some of the issues of student-athletes may bring to the sport psychologist includes worries over maintaining scholarships, pressures from coaches, and exposure in the media. NCAA Division I schools are often “pressure cookers” for athletes, especially in the revenue sports of football, basketball and baseball. Many schools also specialize in one or two nonrevenue sports and pressures on athletes in those sports can be substantial. Working with College Student-Athletes for many students-athletes, starting college brings about substantial psychological change and adjustment (Gould & Finch, 1991). The demands placed on students-athletes (e. g., academic pressures, sport performance, training, travel) usually exceed the demands experienced by non-athlete students. Students-athletes face a variety of developmental issues and have a number of special pressures, including...

...CHAPTER ONE 1.1 Background of the Study Over the years, the investigations of the factors that influence academic performance of students have attracted the interest and concern of teachers, counselors, psychologists, researchers and school administrators in Nigeria (Wiseson, 2001). This is because of the public outcries concerning the low standard of education in the country. The declining quality of education in the country and the breeding of graduates with little technical know-how have resulted in serious setbacks to the industrial development of the nation (Amin, 2005). Different factors are capable of influencing the academic performance of students. Such factors may be the student's internal state (intelligence, state of health, motivation, anxiety parental care etc.) and their environment (availability of suitable learning environment, adequacy of educational infrastructure like textbooks and well-equipped laboratories). Ajila & Olutola, (2000) argued that home environment or family has been recognized as having a lot of influence on the academic performance of students. Ichado (1998) stated that parents’ constant disagreement affects children emotionally and this could lead to poor academic performance in school. The family lays the psychosocial, moral and spiritual foundations in the overall development of the child. However, the mother played significant role in the formation of a home and her roles cannot be over-emphasized. Studies on father-child relationship...

...education during a particular period. Thus, the main characteristics of any educational process are to bring about the best in the Individual. The basic problem today in education is the problem of motivating the students to learn at all levels. The tremendous explosion of knowledge makes it impossible for anyone to keep himself abreast of times even in one’s own sphere of knowledge, unless he develops the habit of careful and well planned study any educational evidences raised on foundations of lacking breath and depth of knowledge becomes unfounded and unsteady. The process of learning is influenced by a variety of personal factors such as sensation and perception, fatigue attention, age study habits, self perception, attention, Intelligence, attitude etc. Study habit serve as the vehicle of learning and self perception is a key factor in learning, or major production of education, nor that it exerts an all pervading influence in human behavior. The construct of the self-perception is now considered to be a major outcome of Education, childhood, socialization and child rearing practices as well as influencing consequent response to those influences (Burns 1982). Azikiwe (1998) describes the study habit as “the adopted way and manner a student plans his private readings, after classroom...
