...Fabiane Freitas British Literature Mr. Conole 9/18/15 Wife of Bath’s Tale; Breton Lais or Arthurian Romance The Wife of Bath’s Tale is one of the most famous tale by Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, in which it discusses women issues in the medieval time. Indecent and strong willed, the wife of Bath refuses to allow men to control her existence by taking measures to shape her own destiny; she tells men what to do instead of letting them have the control in the relationship. The wife is often viewed as a feminist because she ignores the rules and makes people think about the roles women play in society. Although many readers might think the Wife of Bath's Tale is an Arthurian Romance, it is more accurately described as a Breton Lais. Early in the tale the reader learns that, “There was a knight who was lusty live / One day as he came riding from the river / He saw a maiden walking all forlorn / Ahead of him, alone as she was born, / And of that maiden, spite of all she said, / By very force he took her maidenhead” (Chaucer 141). The knight rapes the virgin early in the tale and is a central figure throughout the entire story, thus making him a clear candidate for the protagonist. Although one might think that the knight is the protagonist Goucher College suggests that, “The protagonist could be male or female, which is rare in romances, where the protagonist almost always is male” (Breton 1). The old woman in the tale illustrates this point. She enters the tale when the...

...leaves in the heavy wind. I walk back silently, trying not to make noise, and trip over a small rock. I fall into a pit underneath the leaves and land right into the demon cave. That’s probably the best luck I’ve had all day. Nobody is in the cave, luckily. I search the weapon room and take leather armor, a bow, arrows, two knives in my belt and shoe and a sword at my waist. I leave the moldy cave from the entrance without fear. I blast open the stone door and leave to find Pheles and his demons. I go south from the cave and see a gathering of demons by a circle with skulls contouring the perimeter. I try to stop the ritual, but I’m too late. I hear the incantation “A ƙofar tsakanin sammai ne akwai Karma, da matattu za su tashi da mutane za su fada” just like Laura recited. At the end of the ritual, a gateway opens....

...in small spaces such as streets. This violence was not insurgent, but rather a way of deploying order in the local communities. With the collapse of traditional authority, a shift could be seen in many urban communities in Jamaica. The politicians had failed, there was no food and the people had no one to look up to. It is within this space that the Rude Bwoy reemerged as another figure, the area leader (Bouges, 2006). There were two types of area leaders: one type which was deeply connected to the two-part system and the other which was semi-independent. The former type of area leader is of interest to Johnson and Soeters. Based on the idea of the Mafia don or ‘godfather’, the Jamaican ‘don’ refers to designations such as ‘big man’ or ‘fada’ (father). It is important to note that a don is not merely a person in charge. He politically connected leader who derives power, prestige and status from multiple sources, legal and illegal activities. His geographical area of control is referred to as the garrison. He is different from an area leader because, unlike the latter, the don performs executive tasks whereas the area leader is charged with the day-to-day political activities. Nevertheless, the absence of central leadership in Jamaica for almost twenty years promoted a clan-based structure run by the dons. The emergence of the wealthier and socio-politically integrated dons superseded the area leaders in many aspects of the social realm. The Jamaican dons enforced political allegiance...

...(PART I) TRENDS ON NUTRITION : A Paradigm Shift INTRODUCTION The Hospitality Industry plays a vital role in the Nurtition of our society specifically the Food and Beverage Industry. It caters to all kinds of people, rich or poor, single or married, male or female, individual consumer or family, it has no limit. With the new life style of today’s world, where both parents are working, high demand of work hours and hectic schedules, people tend to divert in fastfood products than cooking at home. This resulted somehow to create health problems of the cumsumers since not everyone in the Food and Beverage Industry is concern about the food they are serving. However, most of them value profit first and unconcious over the health benefits of the food products. Nutrition is a language of healthy life, proper diet and wellness of everyone. The advocacy of “Health is Wealth” is in every corner of the world but sad to note that the number of malnutrition in the Philippines alone, is increasing. According to statistics, under Poverty, Children and Health (Inquirer.net)malnutrition increased from 2005 to 2008, the prevalence of underweight children aged 0-5 years increased from 24.6 percent to 26.2 percent, about 3.35 million children. Another problem that concerns nutrition, is the rampant obesity. Obesity is more of a life and death issue than simply looking “bad.” Obese people are much more higher to develop diabetes type 2 and if not given extra attention will also cause...
