In the novel, conformity and obedience are expected out of every individual. However, individuality is illegal and people are arrested simply for looking different. Instead of reading books, the public is encouraged to watch television with programming directly aimed at promoting conformity. Montag describes the television’s impact on society, stating that it, “tells you what to think and blasts it in. It must be, right. It seems so right. It rushes you on so quickly to its own conclusions your mind hasn't time to protest”(Bradbury). Much like in modern society, Montag’s society is being brainwashed by the selective programming sent to them on their televisions. Providing the public with only one side of the story allows the government to decide what society thinks, and whenever their ideas are challenged, those who are challenging are suppressed and their beliefs are censored. During the holocaust, Nazi soldiers would burn books that challenged their beliefs in order to convince the public to support their totalitarian agenda. Outlets for creativity are silenced in societies where censorship is prevalent, and realizing what creativity is pushes Montag to fight censorship. Once he began reading the books rather than burning them, Montag starts to see humanity in the books. Rather than seeing them as materials he destroys, Montag begins to see the books as humans, stating that, “a man was behind each one of the books. A man had to think them up. A man had to take a long time to put them down on paper”(Bradbury). When Montag is seen contemplating his actions it reflects onto how the rest of society would also react. With access to new information, Montag breaks free from his oppression, and it is safe to assume that anyone else with an open mind would feel this way when exposed to new, unknown
