In the history of western society, women constantly struggled to be free from the degradation and forced submission which is accurately portrayed by the performance of (Re)Singing from the Underspace from the play Fall for Dance. Fall for Dance is a collection of works choreographed by David Parsons, Robert Battle, Andy Noble, and Charles O. Anderson. The first of the collection, (Re)Singing from the Underspace, is motivated by feminist critiques of womanhood in the western society and contradicts the western society by demonstrating non-western imagery. The performers were dressed in blue, white, and black dresses as they danced contemporary or lyrical style to modern music. Although all of the dresses were the same general style, they each had a unique difference to emphasize individualism within women. The play used front lighting to illuminate every woman, implying that society shouldn't leave anybody out. A fourth wall existed between the cast and the audience. The cast seemed to dance without caring about the audience's existence. Throughout this first performance, there was one main performer. Sometimes she would express her own movements, while other times, she would join the other performers. The music had lyrics stating the conditions of the women. At one point, the music seemed dark and listed words such as, "Servant, bitch, Jezebel, whore..." When the music arrived at this part, the movements of the performers would be sharp, rather than fluent. The girls seemed to feel suppressed, yet wanting to express themselves in a dynamic way. When they felt suppressed, they had their backs turned. They finally turned around to confront society's darkness when they chanted words together under their breaths. At another point in the play, the performers laid their white shawls on the ground in a line and danced in front and behind it. The line of shawls seemed to symbolize the views of society on women as they attempt to escape it, but to no avail since they get pushed back to being subservient and humiliated by men. Although the audience is an inactive receiver, we learn that as much as women in history have come a long way, there is still discrimination against them in the western society. (Re)Singing from the Underspace effectively opens our eyes to the unfair treatment of women that still occurs today. It provokes the audience to become feminists advocating equal rights for women, important roles for women in history, and the valuing of women's experiences and lives.
