Fall, A.K.A, the Best Season Imagine waking up and walking outside and hearing the crunch of leaves beneath your feet and smelling the crisp fresh and cool air. Fall makes me so happy and I am anxious for it to come every single year. Everything during fall is absolutely wonderful, I love it! Some of the best times that I have had in my life, oddly occurred during the fall season; and I sometimes wonder if that may be part of the reason(s) that I cherish it so much. Fall is such a beautiful and blissful season; it is the best season of the year. Fall is so wonderful mainly because of the beautiful scenery it displays. Here in Arizona, the summers are very hot and dry, and it almost feels dreadful at times; but the fall here is absolutely beautiful. You can start to notice the transition into fall around mid- September because the mornings are sort of wet from the precipitation and you can feel the cool air gently fan across your whole entire body. Not only that, but later in September, the leaves start to turn into the beautiful array of sunburst orange, medallion yellow and cherry red, and when the leaves start to fall onto the cold hard ground, you can feel and hear the crunch of the leaves beneath your feet. The cool air is so crisp and refreshing; you can feel the slight wind of the cool air tingle your cheeks lightly. The weather is not to cold and not too warm, it is just the perfect measure of both. It is lovely. Not only is the sight of fall beautiful, the different aromas in the air are just as pleasing. Fall has such a unique smell in the air. It is a wonderful mixture of sweet pumpkin pie, burning firewood from the tall chimneys and pickling spices, When you take a deep breath in, it feels so refreshing like chewing on a piece of mint bubblegum. The air is a big part of fall. It creates a comforting and friendly environment. It is not only comforting, but appealing as well. The aromas in the air instantly put me in a much better mood. Not only do the aromas smell like pumpkins and firewood, the smells remind me of my childhood; they bring back tons of memories for me and it makes me feel very nostalgic. The best memory I have that happened during fall was the time that I went to the county fair with all of my friends and we were all happy with no worries. I specifically remember the cool air breezing past everyone smiling faces and the smell of pumpkins and cotton candy swarming the nice cool air. I remember the sunset being so beautiful and graceful with its’ bright and vibrant colors, slowing submerging into the sky. That was my favorite memory that I had in the fall because it seemed that everything was going perfect for me. Another reason why fall is great is because two of the best holidays are within it. Halloween and Thanksgiving are such great holidays and of course they’re in the greatest season (fall). Who doesn’t love Halloween and Thanksgiving? They are holidays filled with sweet yummy treats and very happy people. Halloween is great specifically because the weather is nice and crisp and tons of people are dressed up in unique costumes. The air is filled with excitement and anticipation and the streets are filled with noisy sugar filled children who are screaming with excitement and anticipation. Thanksgiving is great too, all of the food and friends and family that you get to see. Most houses on Thanksgiving are filled with smells of juicy turkey, creamy mashed potatoes and sweet pumpkin pie. There are no gifts involved and that’s wonderful because it’s just to enjoy food and watch football with your family after everyone is going to explode after the amount of food they regrettably ate. And what tops it off is that both of them are in fall. You can tell when it is transitioning from summer to fall by the way people start to dress. Obviously the weather is much colder than it was in summer so people have to dress differently. The apparel for fall is so cute and stylish. Fall clothes are my favorite because you see people (mainly females), wearing scarves, boots and sweaters. The different styles and colors that you see will remind you of fall. For example, the main type of outfits I see girls wear are mocha brown boots, a warm colored scarf and an army green sweater; it definitely reminds me of fall for those reasons. You can smell the scents of different people start to transition into smells of vanilla and pumpkin. Also, people start to dye their hair into deep reds and chestnut browns. It is so great how you can see people change physically because of the change in the weather. Another popular fall fad people do is drink pumpkin spice lattes mainly because Starbucks starts offering them in the fall. I can see why people love them so much, they are so warm and it tastes like pumpkin and cinnamon combined. It’s perfect. Fall is great because bugs start to go away. If there’s one thing I hate in the world, it would have to be bugs. It is pretty funny because my boyfriend was born in the fall and he dislikes it, and he always wondered why I loved it so much and along with all of the other reasons I mentioned above, I told him because that’s when all the bugs start to vanish. He thought I was joking, but I really wasn’t. Most bugs are hairy and peculiar; specifically spiders! As we all know, bugs do not like the cool weather so they leave which is great because it’s a win- win situation for me. I’m glad the fall is not cold enough to freeze the bugs to death but it is cool enough for them to migrate away. Fall is such a great season and people should really start to appreciate the beauty it creates. Fall is the best and most enjoyable season of them all. The weather is nice and fresh and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. The best holidays are also during fall and the environment is so joyous and cozy. The air smells like warm pumpkins and burning firewood. Fall is amazing and I enjoy every single part of what it has to offer.

Niagara Falls

...Faux Falls: The unnatural wonder of Niagara What do you think of when you hear Niagara Falls? You probably think of a tourist destination with astonishing waterfalls . While it is a huge tourist destination for about 22 million people, it's not the only use(Lopez 2007). It's one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It has beautiful scenery and it's a breathe taking experience, but it has been modified for the use of hydropower(Lopez 2007). Beginning as a natural wonder of the world, it started after The Ice Age. Ice melted over, and drained into Niagara River, which caused erosion onto the cliffs between Lewiston, New York and Canada. With this now happening, it created what we now know as Niagara Falls (Niagarafallsstatepark.com, 2014). Niagara Falls isn't just one of the most beautiful places in the world but it is also puts out over 2.5 million kilowatts of hydro electric power, enough to power 24 million 100-watt light bulbs.(Lopez 2007). In 1950, the United States and Canada came to an agreement about the hydropower production from Niagara Falls. Inside of the agreement it included equal parts of hydro power, along with how much water is allowed to flow and also the scheduled months and times (Lopez 2007). In the agreement, the Canadian power stations draw 56,500 cubic feet of water per second and the American power stations draw 32,500 cubic feet of water per second. The flow rates of water are monitored by Ontario Hydro through a sensing...

The Fall of Saigon

...1975: The Fall of Saigon The Vietnam War was, and still is, the longest armed conflict in United States history. It waged from 1959 when the North Vietnamese began a campaign against the South, to April 30, 1975, when the capital of South Vietnam, Saigon, fell. April 30, 1975 marked the first time that the United States had lost a war. After more than ten years of fighting, it was shown that the United States was no longer the nation it used to be. From the day the United States officially went to war on January 31, 1965, to the day the war ended, the capital city of Saigon played a major role throughout the war. As early as 1963, it was the main supply center and command post for all American operations. Later, it would become the focal point of the Tet Offensive. In January 1968, at the beginning of the Tet holiday season, North Vietnamese and Viet Cong launched a massive offensive against the Americans, breaking the truce that had always accompanied that time of the year. This was so bad for the Americans, that Congress passed an act that would prevent any more increases in American involvement. This meant that the only way to continue the war at the same pace was to train South Vietnamese and replace Americans with them. In 1973, the Paris Peace Accords were signed as a treaty between all parties involved with the war. Despite this, fighting continued until 1975, when the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong’s last major offensive, started in 1974, succeeded in capturing...

Research Critique 2 Patient Falls

...characteristics of why patients fall in the hospital setting. The article being critiqued defines a fall as an unexpected drop from a sitting, standing, and lying position, which include an assisted fall (where someone helps guide them to the floor), slipping from a chair to the floor, and when a patient is found on the floor (Hitcho et al., 2008). This critique will discuss data collection, data management, analysis, and interpretation of the findings. The Washington University Institutional Review Board gave their approval for this study. Written consent was waived due to the fact that this study was part of a hospital-based project to improve quality. The study did not pose any risks to the patients as the patients were not put in any situation to induce a fall, and no precautions were taken away from patients that prevent falls. Several sources and a comprehensive fall data collection tool was used to collect data on the patients that fell during their hospitalization which included: the database of adverse events, the electronic medical record, the paper chart, and patient/ family interviews, where no objections to being interviewed were noted (Hitcho et al., 2008). The variables that were identified in the study were the patient’s information, details of the fall, contributing factors, injuries sustained, and the actions that were taken as a result of the fall. The patient information included the patient demographics, cognitive status, admitting diagnosis, fall history, medications...

...No. 8106 Friday, November 19, 2010 Opening the Great Path of Worldwide Kosen-rufu In the 50 years since SGI President Ikeda embarked on his journey for worldwide kosen-rufu, arriving in Hawaii on October 2, 1960, the SGI movement based on Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism has spread to 192 countries and territories. The August and September 2010 issues of the Soka Gakkai monthly study journal Daibyakurenge featured several experiences by SGI members sharing their personal encounters with President Ikeda and their endeavors to promote kosen-rufu in their respective countries. In commemoration of this 50th anniversary, the SGI Newsletter will introduce a selection of these experiences. “A Rainbow over Niagara” By Elizabeth Izumi SGI Canada Executive Advisor It was about six months after I married my husband, Hugh Izumi, a Japanese-Canadian businessman, and was living in Toronto that I received a letter from my mother saying: “Soka Gakkai President Ikeda will be visiting Toronto. He will be an internationally renowned leader someday. As there are no Soka Gakkai members in Canada, please go and meet him at the airport.” Though it was my mother’s request, I wasn’t eager to comply. I was pregnant and not feeling very well, and I also didn’t want to be pressed into practicing Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism. Nevertheless, to please my mother, I went to the airport (on October 11, 1960). I saw a group of Japanese people who looked like they had just arrived. It was...

Seneca Falls

...The Seneca Falls Convention Throughout history women were not treated the same rights as men. Women were thought of as property, wives and mothers. People believed that women were inferior to men. Women could not own property and most of their education consisted of learning how to run a home. Men thought that they were more intelligent than women therefore, they didn’t think a woman could hold political office or vote. Men also thought women should not be involved in legal issues and they were not allowed to hold jobs outside of the home. With the onset of the Industrial Revolution many women went to work in the factories. Also, many women also worked as domestic servants and teachers. This was the first time women began to work outside the home and they began to gain a sense of independence. This led them to demand equal rights. These changes for women during the early 1800’s led women to want equality and the women’s suffrage movement began (kelly, 2011). As the Abolitionist Movement to free the slaves became popular, the idea of equal rights for women began. It was the Quaker women who were the early organizers of these movements. They would organize secret women’s meetings which at the time could be very dangerous. This was just a small step. Women wanted to have equal rights in courts of law, in property matters and in civil rights. Women felt they should have the same rights as men to make decisions on their own and they didn’t want to be thought of...

Things Fall Apart

...Europeans. In most of Africa, there were no countries, only clans and tribes, which made the imperialization much easier as well. These imperialist nations, such as Great Britain, France, Italy, and Germany, showed African nations many new ideals and tools that spread like a cultural virus. One very well-known story of this part of history is a book written by Chinua Achebe, titled Things Fall Apart. The book tells a fantastic story of a tribe in Nigeria which becomes a victim of the European imperialists. Achebe does a remarkable job of giving the reader the vivid change from the African tribe before and after the Europeans arrived. Things Fall Apart centers around a Nigerian tribe leader named Okonkwo. Known for his strength, courage, and most of all, pride, Okonkwo is looked up to by most the people in his tribe. Okonkwo doesn’t handle the European invasion as well as others due to his large sense of pride, which ultimately leads to his downfall and death. Christian missionaries were one of the main forms of imperialization used by Europeans. The two missionaries in Things Fall Apart were Mr. Brown and Mr. Smith. It is common in African communities that there are outcasts existing. Outcasts could be anyone that has a disability, a criminal, or anyone that has been exiled. These missionaries would accept anyone that is an outcast and take them under their wing, showing them very appealing tools and technology. Also, the missionaries would give these outcasts an opportunity...

Things Fall Apart

...Salome Sutter. English 2309-700. DR Savic savic. 06/09/2014 Like Father Not Like Son. The Saying Like Father Like Son Is Not Always True. In Chinua Achebe’s novel Things Fall Apart, we see different relationships between parents and their children. Women seem not to have so much value in leadership role since they can’t earn a title. They are married off to able men to bear children for the clan. We see the boy child being raised to take over after his father. Achebe has shown in great length the concept of father and son relationship to a deeper level. He has shown how a boy will always look up to his father for both positive and negative aspects. The grown adults have a choice to figure a path in their leadership. We mainly learn of Okonkwo the main character that hated everything about his father and chose to live his life the opposite. He put his whole energy into becoming his opposite. Unfortunately his oldest son, Nwoye who looked like his father Unoka was the opposite of him. Okonkwo is a great man in the village of Umuofia since he was 18 years old. He threw the cat in a wrestling fight. “As a young man of eighteen he had brought honor to his village by throwing Amalinze the Cat. Amalinze was the great wrestler who for seven years was unbeaten, from Umuofia to Mbaino.” (Achebe, Chapter 1 para 1) We are told that he continued to earn respect among his clansmen because no one had defeated the cat in seven years. Okonkwo worked so hard to be the opposite of his...

Things Fall Apart

...Women in Okonkwo’s Life Okonkwo is considered the picture of masculinity. He has two barns full of yams, three wives, and is known throughout the village for defeating the undefeated Amalize the Cat in wrestling. He did not start out this great, for his father was lazy and improvident. He was unwilling to help while his loving mother had died when Okonkwo was young. In the book Things’ Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo is a man determined to be strong, powerful, influential, courageous, hard-working, and able to provide for his family; everything his father was not, and somewhat of what his mother was like. The role of women in Okonkwo’s life seemed to be an unimportant role, but in reality, it is the key factor in running his life. Women’s role in Okonkwo’s life is huge, for his mother’s influence was able to get him a home to stay. His wives role in child bearing allows him to have children. His wives caring for the family run the household. Although Okonkwo has a rough exterior, inside he is a man determined to never be what his father was like. In his village of Umofia, Okonkwo is banished for seven years after accidentally shooting a boy, so customs stated that he pack up and leave, along with his family. Okonkwo, with nowhere else to go, went to his mother’s old village. The book states “It was a crime against the earth goddess to kill a clansman, and a man who committed it must flee from the land…Okonkwo was well received by his mother’s kinsman…” This means it is...

Things Fall Apart

...unavoidable demise. Most of the time, the character will have lived their life successfully with plenty of fame and fortune, but because of their status in society, it ultimately leads to their own downfall. People often wonder what the point of a tragedy if the protagonist is just going to die anyways, yet people still read them. Novels like The Great Gatsby, Romeo and Juliet, and Titanic are all very popular tragedies that are best sellers, common in English class, and have even been made into movies. Some might argue that tragedies are written to preserve a memory in honor of those lost, however, others might say it’s to show readers the effect of a problem in order to prevent it from happening again in the future. Chinua Achebe wrote Things Fall Apart as a way to prevent colonization from happening to any other tribe because colonization destroys a society instead of building one like it’s supposed to. The very first thing the white missionaries do is barge in and “shoot everybody except the sick who were stuck at home” (Achebe 139). The white missionaries didn’t even ask if they could live with them, let alone amongst them. They needed to make room for themselves so they wiped out an entire tribe, “ ‘Abeme is no more’ ” (Achebe 137). The white missionaries sure didn’t make a very good impression of who they were. By deciminating an entire tribe and leaving only a few survivors, most likely to spread around the terrors of the white men and how the natives should fear them and listen...

Things Fall Apart

...“Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe offers several ideas as to what motivates people to do the things they do. Greed, anger, and love are just a few of the driving forces which people experience. One motivation, which will be examined in this paper, is that of fear. Fear is a powerful motivator that can either help or hinder. Fear inspires several of the characters in the book to take action in regard to their own particular situations and experiences. Either they conquer their fears and move on, use that fear to overcome a particular situation, or they continue to live in fear allowing it to control them. Nwoye has a fear of his father, Ekwefi has a fear of losing her daughter, and finally Okonkwo has a fear of becoming like his father. Each of these characters experiences some sort of fear and allows it to drive their actions. Nwoye is the oldest son of Okonkwo, who sees him as lazy and weak. At the beginning of the book, Nwoye is 12 years old and is harshly judged by Okonkwo because he cannot work as long or as hard. This results in nagging and beatings by his father to in an attempt to correct what Onkonkwo feels are negative personality traits. Then Ikemefuna joins the household. Ikemefuna is a boy given to Onkonkwo by a neighboring village. Ikemefuna becomes popular among all of Okonkwos children, but becomes especially close to Nwoye. Ikemefuna acts as an older brother to Nwoye, who seems to mature under the tutelage of Ikenefuna. This relationship gives Nwoye confidence...
