The focus of our teaching project is based on the ideology that one has to take care of oneself before taking care of others. Family Caregiver Alliance has a great analogy about self-care of the caregiver, which articulates, “On an airplane, an oxygen mask descends in front of you. What do you do? The first rule is to put on your own oxygen mask before assisting anyone else. Caring for yourself is one of the most important—and one of the most often forgotten—things you can do as a caregiver. When your needs are taken care of, the person you care for will benefit, too.” (Caregiver.org, 2017). As a concept that can be applicable to almost every situation where a subject is taking care of another subject; how much more important is for people

The Effect of Palliative Care on Other Family Members

...The Effects of Palliative Care on Other Family Members Tonya Kerney McKendree University The Effects of Palliative Care on Other Family Members Family members of patients who are in palliative care experience emotions including hopelessness, guilt, and sadness. They are often physically exhausted and may become ill themselves. Many experience depression. Family Caregiver Alliance (as cited in McMillan et al., 2006) has estimated that over fifty million Americans assist a family member with a disability or illness on a regular basis. Of these ill patients, many require extensive care from family members. Caregivers of cancer patients especially experience very high stress levels. They are often burdened with physical exhaustion, emotional distress, and financial worries from loss of time at work to care for their loved one (Emanuel & Emanuel, as cited in McMillan et al., 2006). The purpose of the study I reviewed was “to determine whether hospice plus a coping skill training intervention improved family caregivers’ quality of life, burden, coping, and mastery, compared with hospice plus emotional support and usual hospice care (McMillan et al., 2006, p. 214)”. To participate in the study, caregivers had to be caring for adult cancer patients, both had to give consent, both had to be able to read and comprehend English, both had to have achieved at least a sixth grade education, and both had to achieve a minimun score of seven on the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire...

Elderly Care

...been the responsibility of family members and was provided within the extended family home. Increasingly in modern societies, elder care is now being provided by state or charitable institutions. The reasons for this change include decreasing family size, the greater life expectancy of elderly people, the geographical dispersion of families, and the tendency for women to be educated and work outside the home. Although these changes have affected European and North American countries first, it is now increasingly affecting Asian countries also.[1] According to Family Caregiver Alliance, the majority of family caregivers are women: “Many studies have looked at the role of women and family caregiving. Although not all have addressed gender issues and caregiving specifically, the results are still generalizable [sic] to women because they are the majority of informal care providers in this country. Consider: • Estimates of the percentage of family or informal caregivers who are women range from 59% to 75%. • The average caregiver is age 46, female, married and working outside the home earning an annual income of $35,000. • Although men also provide assistance, female caregivers may spend as much as 50% more time providing care than male caregivers.”” [2] In most western countries, elder care facilities are residential family care homes, freestanding assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and Continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). A Family Care Home is a residential...

Attachment Theory

...Attachment, in dictionary terms, means affection, fondness, or sympathy for someone or something. In psychotherapy, attachment theory refers to how those attachments impact human interpersonal relations. Attachment theory was first conceptualised by John Bowlby, a psychoanalyst who dedicated his time to studying the affectional bonds which form between a child and his primary caregiver. In Segal and Jaffe (2013), the affectional bond is simply but realistically defined as one's first love relationship. Bowlby referred to attachment as a lasting psychological connectedness between human beings. This bond is initially formed by the first attachment figure a person comes across in life. This is in most cases is the mother. In other situations, it may be a father, or where a child is orphaned or put in foster care, it could vary. It refers to anyone who remains in a central role in a child's life for at least the first three to five years. This period is crucial because it is when a child's brain rapidly develops. Bowlby (1984) says that attachment behaviour is most active and overt before the age of three but the need for attachment figures remains throughout life. Bretherton (1985) found that after three, it is less frequent and noticeable as the child gains increased abilities to protect itself and coping skills. Attachment behaviour is however more noticeable during times of exceptional stress. According to Segal and Jaffe (2013), an attachment bond shapes an infant's brain...

Describe The Relationship Between Health And Social Care

...There are many caregivers who will also handle respite care. Respite care is the term for short-term care that is professional help. The respite caregiver usually will COM to your home and get to meet and greet the family and the patient that they will be tending for. As a respite caregiver, they will learn the everyday house, and where all the treatment or medications are stored. A respite caregiver is offered by local services such a non-profit organization, church, religious groups, or a community organization that wants to give back to others whom are in need. There is also another respite service that is usually specialized and can stay for a few days or as long as several weeks. This can give the caregiver some time to hand things like go on a vacation or have some ‘me’ for themselves. With short term care Medicaid and Medicare may pay you for some of the cost of helping a family member directly in receiving respite care. Caregiving Policy: (2 Pages)...

Throughout the illness continuum, patients and their family caregivers are involved in decision making. As the illness worsens and patients can no longer make decisions, decision making becomes the responsibility of their caregivers who may have little preparation for the role. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to examine how caregivers of family members with HF make decisions. A nonlinear decision-making process consisting of several actions was identified, which included actualizing; seeking input, information, or support; reflecting; choosing; evaluating; and validating the decision. Nursing Reflection

According to city-data.com, the adult obesity rate for Conecuh County is 32.6% whereas the state of Alabama is 31%. The rate of child obesity is 18.9% and the state is 13.5% (City-data.com, 2013). The first nursing diagnosis is imbalanced nutrition: more than body requirements (obesity) among residents of my community related to increased food consumption and insufficient energy expenditure for intake. The first goal for this diagnosis is to reduce the prevalence of obesity among the residents. An objective for this goal is that 50% of the obese residents will engage in an exercise plan that will promote adequate weight loss. The interventions for this objective include establishing a community wide exercise program or fitness plan that will promote weight reduction; and develop a meal plan that will enhance weight loss and promote better eating habits. We will work with local health care providers to provide sample menus and meal plans for the citizens who will participate in the weight reduction program. A second objective states that residents will lose 5% of total body weight over a period of six weeks. The interventions used to make this objective a reality include motivating residents by organizing a competition program to see which team can lose the most weight in a specific time period; and establishing...

Sids

...Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is defined as “an unspecified medical entity: the sudden and unexpected death of a reasonably healthy child, whose passing away remains uncertain following the performance of an adequate assessment of medical history, autopsy, and death scene examination”(Valdes-Dapena,1979). SIDS is one of the predominately-unsolved problems of infancy. The number of infants who die each year of SIDS is greater than the number of children who die of pneumonia, child abuse, AIDS, cancer, heart disease, cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy combined (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2007). Even though SIDS is not predictable or 100% preventable, there are prevention tips, guidance, and support for those that have been affected by this tragedy. The tragic loss of a child to SIDS weighs heavily on the minds of all parents. One thought that offers a little comfort to parents who have suffered such a loss is that there appears to be no suffering. In most SIDS cases, death occurs rapidly and during sleep. According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), “SIDS is the prevalent cause of death during the first year of life with a rate of roughly two per every thousand births.” SIDS could possibly have more than one cause, though the final process appears to be associated in the majority of cases. Though it is unknown what causes SIDS, it is known...

Health Care Reform Lll

...system is just beginning to feel the burden (Matthews, 2013). Healthcare for the aging population will have to change for the better for them since so many elders are living to unexpected ages from the past. Doctors must prepare and rethink every aspect of care for the older population, even rethinking the way there going to die(Matthews, 2013). On the other hand the country has to figure out how to pay for this extra care and how to support the older population. As the elder population grow and grow there will be a higher demand for geriatrician; geriatrician will help the elders prepare to live a healthier and longer life on there on. That leads into the decline in care givers; and how some elderly does not want to be a burden on their family they have to rely on visiting nurse to come provide them with the assistance they need or even get put in an assisted living home so they can receive the care around the clock that they need. This builds more and more medical expenses for the seniors that they can not really afford. An elderly expense is double the amount versus an individual that is under the age of sixty five; with all of the expenses from the elderly the younger generation is starting to feel the pressure of cost in healthcare going up. Furthermore, that leads into how we can come up with a solution to provide medical care financially to our aging population. One of the solutions that we must come up with is how our we as a country going to afford to pay for healthcare...

Early Child Development

...affects the way infants develop. Hence, it is fundamental to set positive structure from the beginning because the exposure cannot be undone when raising a child. It is significantly important to provide a nurturing environment. The Affect Families Have On Infants and Childhood Development From infancy, the brain instantaneously goes through developmental change. The progress is an effect of genes and the environment the infant is exposing to and as an outcome of experiences. Early childhood experiences have two categories; experience-dependent and experience-expectant. Experience-expectant refers to the development of the nervous system and it is predictable to develop in a certain way. Standard cognitive growth is reliant of the positive type of environmental exposure. With the exception of any type of fetal damage to the brain, in order for the experience-expectant to be within usual range of development; when an infant is exposed to a loving gesture (as an example), it should respond cognitively. Experience-dependent growth refers to the conditioned behavior response of new experiences and exposures that would occur throughout life. This promotes brain growth and is only superior when coupled with a constructive family environment. Any dispossession of either of these roles can seriously compromise an individual’s ability to flourish, both cognitively and...
