In this paper, I have included three families of three different heritages. The families are the Williams, Vargheses, and the Wiezinskis. Each are from a different heritage, the Williams being from Germany, the Vargheses from India, and the Wiezinskis from Poland. All of the information is different and shows how diverse our world is. All the names used in this paper have been used with the full consent of their owners. I will start with the Williams. The main person whom which I interviewed was Jon Williams. His mother was Anna Claudia and his father was Hugbert Williams both from Germany. He does not know his grandfather on his mother’s side but he does know his grandmother. His grandmother was Veronica Koopmann. His father’s father was Greichi Williams, and his grandmother on his father’s side Schreiezch Bell. Jon was an only child in his family. All of these people in his family are from Germany and are 100% German. Jon Williams grew up in the suburbs of Tampa and later moved to the suburbs of Chicago. Both his father and his mother grew up in Germany. Jon was born in the US after his mother and father came to America in 1987. His mother was 27 and his father was 30. He still remains in contact with relatives, parents and his children. Jon has 2 girls and 1 boy. The places where his relatives are varied, a few live in America but most of his relatives are in Germany, in the city of Berlin. He usually visits his far away relatives once or twice a year and goes weekly to see those who are nearby. His original family name was not changed and has stayed Williams as far back as he can remember. Jon is a Catholic and attends Sunday masses with his spouse. His spouse is not the same background as him, she is Lithuanian. Jon went to a public school in Tampa from preschool to 6th and then continued his education in Chicago. His neighborhood was culturally different in both cities. People from all different backgrounds were engaged and living in the neighborhood. He belongs to a religious institution and does consider himself active in it. He goes to the institution more than once a week. He does practice his religion at home by praying, celebrating special holidays, and Bible reading. He participates in holiday celebration at his religious institution. His friends are from the same religious background but have different ethnicities. His native language is German and only uses occasionally. He does read German newspapers in German weekly. German tradition uses many early European methods as well as current methods. He does go to the doctor regularly and has a healthy habit of using culture and science. The second family I will discuss about is the Varghese family. The main person is Raju Varghese, who is 56 years old. His mother and his father are both from India. The same applies to all his grandmothers and grandfathers. He is the 1st of 10 siblings. He has 6 sisters and 3 brothers. He grew up in a rural community in South India. Both his Mother and his Father are from India. Raju was 31 years old when he came to America. His parents did not come to United States. When Raju was growing up he lived in an extended family with all his aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives. He does remain in contact with his parents, siblings, cousins, aunts etc. Most of his cousins and siblings moved but his uncles and aunts did not. He usually visits his cousins in America during special holidays and he visits his relatives in India yearly. His family name had changed from Chottakalam to Varghese. He is a Hindu along with his wife. His spouse is Indian. He had gone to a public school all his life. His neighbors all are all very different in terms of ethnicity. He does not belong to a religious institution and therefore does not consider himself to be not active in any religious institution. His friends are from the same religion and the same ethnic background. Raju speaks Telegu and prefers to speak it. He usually reads Telegu books. His tradition uses an ancient Indian remedy called Ayurveda. Ayurveda is believed to be effective in his religion and he therefore does not believe in the need to go see the doctor for regular checkups. He also is a vegetarian and believes that different types of fruits and vegetables affect how he feels. And in that case will use fruits and vegetables for health maintenance, protection, and restoration. Our third and final family will be the Weizinski family. They originate in the city of Warsaw in Poland. The main person will be Jennifer Weizinski. Her mother and father were born in Warsaw Poland. Her mother’s mother is from Warsaw and her mother’s father is from Munich. Both her father’s father and mother are from Warsaw. She has one brother and no sisters. She grew up in urban Warsaw with her parents. Jennifer came to America when she was 13, her father was 45 and her mother was 42. When she was growing up she lived with her cousins, uncles, aunts, and parents. She maintains contact with all of her relatives and is very closely knit with them. Most of her relatives live near her. She visits these relatives weekly to see how they’re doing. Her family name has not been changed recently, though it may have. Jennifer is a Catholic along with her spouse, Jeremiah. Jennifer went to a private school both in Poland and in America. Jennifer lives in a Polish community where most if not all of her neighbors are Polish. She does belong to a religious institution and says that she is deeply involved in it. Jennifer goes to the church daily for mass. She practices her religion by praying, diet, bible reading, and celebrating religious holidays. She occasionally prepares Polish food but uses a lot of Polish techniques for medicine. She rarely participates in ethnic activities. Her friends are different ethnicities and religions. Her native language is Polish and she speaks it regularly. She teaches a Polish class and writes assignments in Polish for her students. She uses many Polish medicines for her illnesses and also goes for regular checkup at the doctor’s. Overall each culture varies. The way each culture defines how they react to illnesses are overwhelmingly diverse. As the world changes though, more and more are looking forward onto science and technology in their beliefs about illnesses. A person cannot know all of the traditions different cultures use for their treatment of illnesses, but it is a nurse’s job to know how to be culturally competent.
