...Family Meals Observation Family meal observation Name Institution Family meal observation Observation is one of the many methods of data collection. In this study observation is used as the mode of getting information about a family meal time. The observation is done at a restaurant, in the evening and in particular it is done between the hours 7:30 and 8:20pm. The family under the observation is made up of the father, mother son and daughter. The choice of the time is preferable because, at this time the parents are free from work and can spare some little time from their busy schedules and have a meal with the family. The time is also convenient in that the family will enjoy their meal after which, they can do some catch up on what has been going on in their life’s. To add to this, choice of this time gives the advantages of there being many families at the restaurant and hence one finds it easy to select one for the observation. On arrival at the restaurant, it is the lady who chooses a table and everyone else follows. The man of the family pull the chair for the wife as the children helps themselves out. The table setting has 4 chairs. The father sits directly opposite the mother. The family has a daughter and a son. From the point, the family entered the restaurant, it is clear that the daughter and father have a liking of each other and no wonder they sit next to each other at the dinner table. On the other hand, the son seems to be extremely quit and barely...

...Ethnography Study: Personal Identities of Homeless People This paper is an ethnographic study of the personal identities of people who are homeless and living in Chicago, Illinois. People who are homeless are portrayed in and thought of in negative light. Much too often do people group homeless people into one category in terms of judging their background before meeting them; their state of homelessness has been offered as informative of who they are. Their voices and perspectives rarely contribute to broader knowledge about who they are as people. As such, the forced ‘homeless identity’ has resulted in placing them as ‘different’ than the ‘normal’ people with homes. An August 2014 analysis by Chicago Coalition for the Homeless estimates that 138,575 Chicagoans were homeless in the course of the 2013-14 school year. This is 19.4% more than the 116,042 people who were homeless a year earlier . With the recognition that homelessness is continuously increasing every year come important questions about how this happened, what could be done about it, and who are the people experiencing homelessness. This ethnography is concerned with this last question. This thesis centers on the personal identities of people experiencing homelessness. I want to understand how they see themselves on an individual level. Identities matter. Identifying people on the basis of their homelessness influences how they are thought about, and thus responded to by policy makers, service providers...

...Observatin Observation A good way to assess a situation between people is to observe their behaviors and actions in conversation. How did they interact with each other? Where their non-verbal messages intertwined with the verbal ones? Where they sitting closely or at a distance? The paper will cover one event where these types of observations were made during the duration of a one-hour dinner at a local restaurant. Background The local Applebee’s restaurant is one of a mixed environment of families’ mature and young adults. On a Saturday early evening, a man and woman were dining at the table next to my table where my family was enjoying dinner. The restaurant was moderately busy but not over capacity and sitting was still open for the patrons. The waitress sat them down at a table, he holding out her chair to sit and then sitting himself. Interaction Behaviors The man and woman were business casual, him with starched kakis and shirt, her with a casual dress and heels. They were not overdressed for the restaurant, but not casually dressed in shorts, tee shirts and sandals or tennis shoes. They sat opposite sides of the table in conversation when the waitress arrived to start the ordering process. The distance between them indicated more of a personal relationship than social indicating they were semi familiar with each other (DeVito, 2009). He nodded to the lady, indicating she should order her first and then gave his order to the waitress. He...

...have to use the bathroom more, seem to be in a lot more physical pain, and need a lot more attention and assistance. My grandmother, on the other hand, has a little bit of energy, doesn't think that anyone needs to help her with things such as cleaning, laundry, meals, etc., has become more of a moody individual, and she needs to feel like she is still useful and in control. She hates that she has me there as a caregiver because she thinks she can manage her day-to-day routine by herself, but simply cannot. She does not take care of herself like she used to. She forgets to shower, cook meals for herself, clean her house, and much more. That is why I stepped in because she needed help doing all of those things. She asks the same questions over and over again and forgets why I am there. She gets pretty moody with me, which is not her at all. She was always the Grandma that cooked us grandkids meals when we walked through the door. I would say that my Grandmother is in the middle stage of Alzheimer's disease because her cognitive and functional abilities have declined over the last year or so. She sometimes needs help showering and using the bathroom. She also needs help with remembering names and if they are in our family. As you can see, individuals that live in a nursing home are a little different from people that live in their own home...

...eating disorders. However, I will base this essay on one of these classifications known as Anorexia Nervosa eating disorder which is defined as a physiological illness whereby people starve themselves and refused to eat - Ambrose and Deisler (2011). Another author defines anorexia nervosa as refusal to maintain a healthy body weight and fear of gaining weight Shepphired (2010). For the purpose of this essay, I will discuss much more on this type of eating disorder popularly known as Anorexia nervosa by DSM-V(2013). I am going to divide this essay into three parts. I will look at the signs and symptoms of anorexia nervosa. I will identify the possible impact of the illness in the life of a patient and her immediate environments (the families and Friends of the individual) and the treatment or nursing intervention. I will also relate this experience to one of my patient at my placement. In accordance with the Data Protection Act (2000) and Nursing and Midwifery code of conduct (2010), I have adopted the name Lola (not the Real name) in order to maintain confidentiality. Meanwhile, I have sought her permission to use Her scenario as a case study and she gave her consent before I started this write up. Lola’s Parent have observed and reported some early attitudinal abnormalities such as reading food labels and diet book for calories contents, measuring the portions of her food, pretending she has eating or...

They were observed at meal time, study time, and at times when they were in rooms relaxing. At a sorority, the women were observed at a meal time, study time, and in main rooms socializing. Results Observations made while at the fraternity were very interesting. During meal times, the men had a lot of interaction. They all sat together at a long table and there were conversations between two people as well as conversations with the entire table involved. The topics of conversation ranged anywhere from classes to crazy girlfriends. There was talk about plans for the day and a lot of talk about their favorite foods the cook had made this year. When men entered the room, there were greetings and handshakes with those that passed each other. During study time observation, there was very little interaction. Men sat at desks with barriers. Most had headphones in and only stopped to ask a quick question or show someone a web site. The observation of the men in down time resulted in a good amount of communication. The interaction ranged from sports, girls, family, and life. There were only four men in the room and the conversation was much more personal than at the...

...business there are managerial trades, culinary trades, service trades, financial trades, as well as many other micro-trades. Each of these stated vocations work together to provide an enjoyable and quality experience for the consumers who patronize the establishment. Post 79 is an established restaurant that strives to provide a superior experience to its patrons. There are many areas in which Post 79 can improve the customers’ encounter through innovative changes. One of these innovations that could enhance the consumers’ encounter is introducing technology at the tables through the placement of tablet devices in which the consumer can choose to interact with their servers, view the food and drink options, leave feedback, pay for their meals, as well as use it to listen to music or surf the web. Opportunity In America today people have become preoccupied with technology and all that it can do for an individual. Apple’s quarterly revenue rose 26% and rang in at $37.5 billion in September 2013 (Apple Press Info, 2013). IBM, which is a technology giant that provides software to businesses across the globe, has shown nearly an 11% earnings growth in 2013 (NASDAQ, 2013). Although not everyone may desire to incorporate this into their dining experience, there is a large amount of people that would and it could actually open the door to a whole different crowd. Bringing an established organization into the present and preparing them for the future takes a very gentle touch. It...

...people probably think of it as just a decent place to pick up a quick, cheap meal. In some cases, this is true. McDonald’s is one of the most widely known and popular fast food restaurants around the world. However, McDonald’s can be a satisfying meal to grab on the go or even to relax and enjoy some people watching. This type of place is perfect to find many different kinds of people to observe. This may not be a place for a romantic date. However, there are not too many places you can go have a dinner with your family with the bill coming out to be under twenty dollars. Sure most of the food may be unhealthy, but it is the cheapest and most efficient route to satisfying your appetite. This may be why McDonald’s has become such a powerful food chain. But after visiting the Oxford McDonald’s, I realized the many different features that make this restaurant so attracting to people. Around lunchtime, I walked across the parking lot, and I noticed the drive through was packed with people just waiting to get their meals and get on the road. I walked inside the doors of the McDonald’s, passed the cashier, and took a seat in one of the booths in the dining area. The booths were big and comfortable and they were all along walls of the dining area. This area was designated for people that wanted to sit down and enjoy their meals. People are spread out around the tables and booths far enough to where they...

...JohnMate1122@gmail.com WGU GLT1 Task 1 Two examples of native non-western cultures that have been impacted by globalization are Japan and China. In 1971 the first McDonalds was introduced to Japanese culture. Japanese culture places a lot of importance on food and traditions. One of those traditions is Obentos. The practice of Obentos includes meals being made by mothers for their children in a precise way. These carefully thought out healthy meals were meant to sustain children throughout the day and give them quality nutrition so that they could focus on their studies. The precise way the meal was made was also meant to mirror the role of a Japanese citizen. The introduction of fast food has not only had an impact on Obentos, it has also impacted obesity in Japan. Obesity rates have risen from 3% prior to the introduction of fast food, to 10% currently. Japan now has the second largest amount of McDonald’s franchises in the world, after the USA. WGU GLT1 Task 2 Drug or substance abuse is a socially significant problem in the United States that affects us all. Drug abuse can significantly impact families and communities. Thirty one percent of America's homeless suffer from drug abuse or alcoholism. As many as sixty percent of adults in Federal prisons are there for drug-related crimes. Children with prenatal cocaine exposure are more likely to need special education services in school. Special education costs for the affected communities are estimated at...

Many of the community members live in apartments or other grouped housing, and has the ability to interact outside of school as well. Assumptions The main assumptions of the community include that some of the children will be poorly educated because of the community in which it resides. It is also assumed that these children are not going to be eager about school, particularly high school and college because the percent of bachelor level families is very low in this area. It is also assumed that a good majority of the students live in difficult situations at home, and probably have two parents that work in order to make ends meet. Either that, or the families just rely completely on the government to be able to survive. One of the best examples that I can give to affirm that some of the children are poorly educated revolves around a...

...Black Friday is the annual shopping holiday that occurs on the Friday following Thanksgiving. It is mostly a shopping ritual to those people living in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Black Friday is a significant day to many retail stores because it is referred to as the start of the Christmas or holiday shopping season. The origin of the popular Black Friday dates back to before 1961, in Philadelphia, where it was formally used to describe the heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic. It was always seen as extremely disruptive to the Philadelphia Police Department and always transpired on the day after Thanksgiving and thus the name Black Friday came about. As the years passed, an alternative reasoning for the title came to be known which denoted that retailers traditionally functioned at a financial loss recognized as, “in the red” from the months January to November. “Black Friday” therefore signifies the point at which retailers finally start to return a profit, “in the black”. Over the years more and more stores have begun opening at extremely early hours to help consumers get a jump-start on the sales. Some retailers have even started the trend of opening up at midnight. The Black Friday craze is tremendously popular, so popular in fact, that many incidents including violence has been seen in some cities in the past. We wanted to research if Black Friday should be considered a ritual. Our research process included secondary and primary sources. Our primary sources were...
