Hope this email finds you well.
This is Shahin Shafiei (AAMC ID: 13977030). I am one of the applicants to the University at Buffalo Family Medicine Residency Program.

I had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Symons at the Winter Weekend conference in Saratoga Springs in New York last January and learning more about the structure of the inpatient and outpatient family medicine rotations in your program. I believe that the three distinct training tracks along with the concentration in global health that your program provide is the perfect fit for me and in line with my clinical interests.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

...My strongest leadership qualities are determination, empathy, and communication. I have always had a strong personal drive and steadfast determination to succeed in every endeavor I have committed to. I value that I do not need others’ pressure to thrive in both academics and other activities, but instead already have a will to succeed instilled in my character. One example of my determination in my personal life is my struggle with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Most people with OCD feel the need to complete certain tasks or ponder specific situations in order to continue with everyday life. Medicine can help to minimize mild cases, however there is no set “cure” for those that are more severe. The only proven way to fight the harmful...

...and over-the-counter (OTC) contraceptives and identify strengths and weaknesses in resident education. Methods: We developed a survey for distribution among 50 randomly selected U.S. obstetrics-gynecology residency programs. Results: Of 202 respondents, only 57% and 36% of residents reported adequate knowledge to counsel patients regarding latex vs. nonlatex condom use, respectively. Ninety-six percent knew spermicides were nonprotective against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs); however, there was limited knowledge about delivery options. Only 17% had ever fit or prescribed a diaphragm, and 30% reported knowledge in performing a fitting. Greater than 80% of residents stated they received no formal didactics addressing the use of condoms, spermicides, or diaphragms. Limited experience regarding Cycle Beads and natural family planning was expressed. Conclusions: Obstetrics-gynecology residents receive little formal training about barrier and OTC contraceptive options and seek more education because of their awareness of inadequate knowledge. Introduction he Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and Residency Review Committee require that all obstetrics-gynecology residency programs include education and training regarding ‘‘clinical skills in family planning.’’1 Furthermore, because a woman’s choice for contraception is highly individual and depends on multiple factors, it is important that education encompasses the spectrum of all available...

Objective career success operationalized as the number of leadership positions held did not mediate the relationship, but income change and career satisfaction mediated the relationship between the hours worked and years employed in emergency medicine. Work centrality was significantly related to subjective career success more so for men than women and perceptions of success or self-efficacy were positively related to subjective career success for women, but not for men. The expected pattern of women indicating more difficulties with personal time and family time did not emerge; but women did indicate less perceived support from the organization, fewer EM leadership positions, less perceived control over their work situation and less organizational support than did men. Religion and Spirituality in Medicine

...Vincent Coughlin PATHE 200 Final Project Spring/15 RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY IN MEDICINE THESIS STATEMENT: Patients with multiple religious beliefs are treated everyday by emergency care workers which creates a void in respect towards the patient and their beliefs if the proper training and knowledge are lacking. INTRODUCTION When the subject of religion and spirituality come up in conversation in the governmental arena most people will argue that they are both on separate planes and should remain that way. But when people were asked if there is a place for religion in the medical field, the majority of those asked will say that they would prefer their physicians inquire about their individual faith and beliefs. In fact, polls indicate that the U.S. Population is highly religious; that most people believe in Heaven and hell. The same people also believe in the healing power of prayer and the capacity of faith to aid in the recovery from disease (N.E.J.O.M. 342). Religion and Spirituality have become an intricate part of patient care in the last 20 plus years. Religion is understood as a set of beliefs, rituals and practices usually embodied within an institution or an organization. Religion is more generalized and all-inclusive. Spirituality is more defined and specific to each individuals Religion. Spirituality is thought of as a search for what is sacred in life, one’s deepest values, along with a relationship with God...

How to Effectively Attract and Retain Talented Physicians

...Even a request of such measure would not solve the problem with physician shortage. Assistance from international countries like Canada with a surplus of physician is welcomed; however as a country we cannot depend on other national to resolve United States physician shortage. It is predicted that we will have a “shortage of 85,000 to 200,000 physicians in 2020 unless action is taken soon to increase the number from 25,000 physicians who graduate from United States medical schools annually. Also “shortage of physicians in rural areas will present an even greater challenge than for metropolitan areas, as fewer and fewer physicians” entering the medical profession is choosing a rural location for their practice. (Stanley, 2009) Problem Statement Physician supply is decreasing at a time when the demand for quality healthcare along with the number of aging patients is increasing. Hospitals and health care organizations are experiencing an increase in physician attrition rates that is expected to grow through 2020. How do you attract and retain talented physicians? Suggestions The healthcare facility or hospital should create a recruiting plan which considers the need...

Physicians Assisted Suicide

...Physicians-Assisted Suicide Physician-Assisted Suicide is a medical process where a physician supplies a terminally ill patient with a prescription for one dose of lethal medication. The prescription is given to a patient upon request only if the patient intends to end his or her own life because of suffrage from a terminal illness. Today, physicians-assisted suicide is more commonly known as the Death-With-Dignity Act. Recent stories of patients who have attempted to end their own life by lethal medication have made countless headlines concerning the topic throughout many informational sources. Currently, the states of Washington, Oregon, and Vermont are the only three states that have adopted the Death-With-Dignity Act. Physician-Assisted Suicide is among many practices that aid in ending a patient’s life along with DNR’s, DNI’s, and AND’s, when life-sustaining treatments are denied. Physicians-Assisted Suicide is much more controversial than other life ending methods because it enables a patient to end her or her own life in a way that many individuals feel is immoral and unethical. The ethical issues of physicians-assisted suicide are both emotional and controversial, yet healthcare workers deal with a request for this alternative every day. Is physicians-assisted suicide the answer? The question doesn’t come by an easy answer. However, both sides of the debate, either for it or against it, provide strong, concrete points that help truly uncover where the controversy lies...
