...This week on the Fantasy Football Fanatics Blog Posts we’ll briefly go over the game from last Thursday night, starts of the week, and a few streaming options. Any point total referred to are in standard scoring. Storylines from the Buccaneers Vs. Patriots TNF game Doug Martin- Doug Martin had 13 carries for 74 yards and a touchdown along with 1 reception for 8 yards. In his first week back from suspension Doug Martin was the clear RB1 for the Buccaneers as Jacquizz Rodgers only had 3 carries for 2 yards and Charles Sims had 1 carry for 3 yards(though he did have 31 yards through the air). Doug Martin’s usage will only increase as he gets back into shape and gains the coaching staffs trust. Martin impressed all offseason and during the preseason....

...decide. Nine, eight, seven…” These are the thoughts going through Aaron’s mind as he sits in front of his computer contemplating which of the two players is better to draft for his fantasy baseball team. If you have ever fanaticized about what it would be like to manage your own team of professional players and compete with your peers, fantasy sports is the hobby for you. Fantasy sports is a social epidemic that has been on the rise for many years and will continue to inflate for a long period of time. According to encyclopedian.com, a fantasy sport “is a game where fantasy owners build a team that competes against other fantasy owners based on the statistics generated by individual players or teams of a professional sport” (Truesdale). There is also the ability to trade, cut, and sign players, just like a real sports team owner. Some players who are very knowledgeable of the sport play for money, whereas some players like me play for fun on websites that host the game for free. Being part of the fantasy sports league motivated me to closely follow and watch how my drafted players perform. My knowledge of sports now is far greater than when I didn’t participate in fantasy sports. Watching sports news channels and discussing the latest updates with my brothers helped me to be able to manage my fantasy team well. During my free time, I would search for latest gossip on sports on a website called RealGM.com. It told me all the players who were performing well and those who were...

...people have invested themselves into their favorite team by purchasing season tickets, sporting countless items of team gear, devoting many hours to fantasy football, and gambling. It is no secret the level of impact that the NFL has on so many people of all ages and genders. The NFL does a great job marketing their product and brand to everyone across the United States. I personally look forward to see how my Bengals will fair every season. As every season passes, I become more and more encompassed with the National Football League. I find myself becoming more attached to every storyline throughout the entire year. I become more involved with the draft process, the training camp headlines, and free agent acquisitions. The sixteen game NFL schedule doesn’t quench my thirst, and I find myself wishing for more when the season comes to an end. Although the NFL produces a great product every Sunday afternoon, are they taking the necessary steps to protect and assist the people that make it all possible? Like many of the millions of people that tune in for the NFL on Sunday, I used to find myself craving for the next big hit. I loved watching players like Ray Lewis and James Harrison smashing the receiver coming across the middle, or the running back trying to shoot through the line. It upset me when the National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell came down hard on players for hits that we all look forward to. I began to think and...

...NFL Case Study 1. Discuss the factors that have resulted in the NFL becoming “America’s Game” and the most popular sport in the country? The fundamental reason for NFL becoming “America’s Game” and the most popular sport in the country is because the NFL was able to market the sport as an entertainment business. Leveraging television and the fact that American football was only played in America, the NFL was able to create a “holiday” feel that was unique and that American’s took pride in, as a result paid more attention to the sport. Another contributing factor was to control the quality of the product. Making sure that each team had the resources to perform professionally and one team could not gain absolute advantage was crucial to maintaining a competitive parity. To do this the NFL implemented controlling cost and revenue sharing, in which the lowest earning team could compete with the highest earning team. 2. Explain the dynamics behind the competitive balance in the NFL versus other U.S. based properties as well as other leagues globally. The NFL has two methods of maintaining parity. Amongst the teams, the NFL uses revenue sharing in three ways: “1. National Revenue Sharing: All national revenue was pooled and split evenly between the teams at the end of the year. 2: Gate Revenue Sharing: Visiting team share was pooled and split evenly. Supplemental revenue sharing: focusing on teams’ local income, teams with higher local revenues transferred a significant...

...It’s a Saturday afternoon in October, and for many Americans across the country, that means one thing: football. Within the crowded parking lot of FedEx Field, amidst the sea of tailgaters, a scene breaks out. On one side of the street, a group of fans decked out in maroon jerseys, red face paint, and plastic headdresses chant “Hail to the Redskins!” On the other side, a group stands holding banners and signs that read “I am a person, not a mascot,” and “”R” word = “N” word.” This scene is one that has become fairly common over the last few decades. Since the early 1960s, Native American mascots and logos have become a site for extensive debate. Although mascots are used by sports teams to create unity amongst both the team and fans, the use of Native American mascots raises questions of authenticity, representation, appropriation, and racism. At the center of these debates is one question: “Are Native American mascots a positive way to honor and include Native Americans or a harmful and negative stereotyping of Native Americans?” The...

...Coleman, Shonte Brockman, Leroy Ducasse, Courtney Misterek, Elliott Nelson, LaMonica Smiley QNT 561/Applied Business Research and Statistics Dr. Charlene Dunfee February 10, 2011 Abstract The research study was interested in determining whether extending the regular season of the National Football League (NFL) would be agreeable to NFL players and fans. The problem exists because the NFL owners are pushing for a season extension, but also want to consider how this will impact the players. Surveys were distributed to collect data for this important topic. It was concluded that neither fans nor players want to extend the season, and it is hopeful that these results will be provided and taken into consideration before the owners make a final decision. More of the Same Game Every year professional football keeps lovers of the game on edge, as fans watch a 16-game regular-season in anticipation of the big finale, the Super Bowl Championship. The football schedule consists of four pre-season games and 16 regular-season games. Roger S. Goodell, Commissioner of the NFL, has proposed shortening the pre-season by two games, thereby extending the regular season from 16 games to 18. The proposal by the commissioner has caused controversy between the NFL and the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA). With an extended season, probabilities exist that players will sustain more injuries and share less of the revenues from the games. Regardless of the threat of a strike...

Goldstein Yahoo Research, New York, New York, 10018 A basic objective of the social and economic sciences is to predict behavior. With the availability of social network data, it has become possible to relate the behavior of individuals to that of their acquaintances on a large scale. While the similarity of connected individuals is well established, it is unclear if and how social data can predict behavior, and whether such predictions are more accurate than those arising from current marketing practices. We employ a communications network of over 100 million people to forecast highly diverse behaviors from patronizing an offline department store to taking interest in an advertisement to joining a recreational league. Across all the domains, we find that social data are strongly informative in identifying individuals who are most likely to undertake actions, and that in identifying such individuals, social data generally improve the predictive accuracy of baseline models. Key words : Computational social science, product adoption, social networks Predicting individual behavior is a basic objective of the social sciences, from economics (Manski 2007) to psychology (Ajzen and Fishbein 1980), sociology (Burt 1987, Coleman...

...My Movie Critique of The Blind Side Shannon Cowper English 225: Introduction to Film Michael Warren February 2, 2014 Some people may feel that if a movie wins an academy award that it is a great movie because the film critics have experience, the film critics are paid professionals, and also that the film critics decide which movies are nominated for an academy award so the movie must be good. But this is where many people beg to differ regarding the film critic’s reviews on a particular film. In some cases, if a film critic decides that a movie is good, not every movie goer will feel the same way. I have sat and listened to Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert as they either praised or destroyed a film. Whenever I chose to go and view a film they have given their customary thumbs up to I would normally not enjoy the film. It is possible that I did not see the same things within a film as they did as it was evident that I was not viewing the film in the same manner as a film critic by looking for camera angles, editing, or frames. All that I cared about was escaping for a couple of hours and receiving some enjoyment from the movie. Some people feel that this is a special time for film criticism. Never before have more people been able to express their views about a film. Being a film critic was once a profession, but it’s not a job any longer and there is not a huge financial gain by doing so. However, this opens the door for those who want to critique a film and also...

They stay rooted because they are almost impossible to change (Macionis and Plummer, 2012). Chodorow believed that although both the male and female are completely dependant on the mother as a child, the girl however stay dependant and the boy is forced to break away and face the world. This theory can used to explain cases of men's hostile actions towards women, also abandonment issues later on in life (Macionis and Plummer, 2012)...

...between video games and violence amongst gamers. Despite the numerous reports that claim it is directly related to violence, video games are beneficial because they enhance the cognitive flexibility and teach moral lessons. Video games are games that are played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a monitor or any other display. Video gaming has become increasingly popular because some people feel the need to “escape” from the harsh reality, and dive into their fantasy realm that is video games. Whether players take the role of the great detective they dream to be in “L.A. Noire” and bring criminals to justice, or a Dark Lord of the Sith and spread fear across the galaxy in “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic”, they indefinitely found their place and enthusiasm in video games. As a matter of fact, certain genres of video games are now played as a competitive sport; Counter-Strike (First Person Shooter), Starcraft (Real Time Strategy) and even the football simulated game of FIFA are now played as a competitive sport, in which the winners walk home with fame and glory. Despite these achievements, video game controversies have also emerged, with “series of media claims that video games cause violence.”(Burnett); a common misconception that suggests video games are the direct link to violent behavior amongst gamers. Video games are beneficial to gamers due to their contribution to a...

...gun violence, it's a reality in today's world. Truly something is seriously wrong because school buildings should be a safe place for all. Study after study conducted on the who's and why's of school gun violence reveals an important fact: There is no reasonable answer for such violence to have taken such a rise in incidence and continue to be the prevailing societal threat it is today, in every school across the nation, especially large school communities. The whole community needs to act together and get involved. The statistics are threatening enough. The U.S. Department of Education estimated 5.5 million students were enrolled in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 in the 2006-07 school year. Among this population, during this single year, there were 767,000 violent assaults and 35 (27 homicides and 8 suicides) school associated violent deaths (Dinkes, pars. 5, 6, 10). From the broader period, years 1999 to 2006, reported 116 students killed in 109 school associated incidents (Shuster, par. 2). Although national attention to school shootings has heightened in recent years, a violent incident in a school setting was first recorded in 1955. In a Swathermore College dorm in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania on January 11, Bob Bechtel, age 22, shot and killed a fellow student who was asleep in his room (ProQuest, par. 3). In the 2009 study The Leading Issues Timeline compiled by ProQuest reported that the first High School shooting wasn't until December 30, 1974. Honor student...
