ON, TO THE CITY OF GOD PART III.THROUGH THE SEVEN VALLEYS PART IV.RECEPTION AT THE ROYAL COURT 1 The Conference Of The Birds By Farid Ud-Din Attar PART I. THE PARLIAMENT OF THE BIRDS THE PARLIAMENT OF THE BIRDS Once upon a time, in the dim old days, all the birds of the world assembled in solemn conclave to consider a momentous question. Ever since the dawn of Creation the inhabitants of every city had had a king or leader, called Shahryar, or the friend of the city, but these feathered souls had no king to befriend them. Theirs was an army without a general—a position most precarious. How could they be successful in the battle of life without a leader to guide the weakwinged party through the perils of earthly existence? Many an eloquent speaker addressed the assembly, deploring their helpless plight in plaintive terms, bringing tears to the eyes of thetiny ones, and it was unanimously agreed that it was highly desirable, nay, absolutely necessary, that they should place themselves without delay under the protection of a king. At this stage, full of fervour, leapt forward the Hoopoe (Hud-hud) renowned in the Muslim scriptures for the part she had played as King Solomon’s trusted...

...I had told Farid, “[you] think I don't have family in Pakistan and Iran? I could have ran like everyone else... I stayed because of them"(257). Thursday it is. Farid and Amir, two middle-aged men came to look for Sohrab. Unfortunately, Sohrab was taken nearly a month ago by that haughty, lamb-eating Talib official, and those two men did not take the news very lightly. I hadn’t even gotten to that part when Farid, the man with one arm, leaped at me and began to strangle me. Strong man he was! I fell back, knocking my chair over and scattering most of the papers on my desk everywhere. I gasped for breath, but there was nothing I could do. Amir, the other man, told him that kids were watching and Farid finally let me go. I was furious. This man, who does...

...Talibs drove by, Amir was mesmerized by them for a minute. Farid warned him never to stand at the Talibs again, because they welcomed any chance to start a conflict. An old beggar overheard them, asked for change, and started a conversation; while chatting, he quoted a line from a poem Amir recognized. It turned out that the man was a professor who used to teach at the university alongside Amir's mother. It was now Amir who was begging the old man-for any details about his mother. He gave Amir just a few small details about her, which amounted to more than he had ever learned from Baba. Amir was deeply grateful. The old man directed him and Farid to the orphanage in Karteh-Seh. A skinny man answered the door at the orphanage. He pretended not to know who Sohrab was until Amir begged, "I'm his half uncle." Once he trusted the men enough to let them in, he told them Sohrab was fantastic with his slingshot, from which he was inseparable. In the man's makeshift office, he explained that they had no heat or hot water and very little food or supplies. The Taliban refused to pay for renovations or improvements. The man did not seem to want to talk about Sohrab. When Amir insisted, he revealed that a Talib official had taken Sohrab a month earlier. This official came every few months and paid to take a child with him; the man had no choice but to consent, or he knew he and all his children would be shot. This news so enraged Farid that he tackled the man and tried to strangle him to death...

...wealthy legitimate son of Baba, he lived in a mansion, wore jeans, rode in an American car and was able to go to school. Furthermore, Amir never had to worry about having enough resources. Baba frequently threw lavish parties at his mansion and lived in luxury. As result of being a son of a wealthy businessman, Amir became blind to the societal ills all around him. However, this does not become apparent until years later when Amir revisits Afghanistan. After Amir Returns to Afghanistan Farid is driving him through town, meanwhile, Amir began to notice how impoverished the country is. Amir then exclaims “I feel like a tourist in my own country” (Hosseini, 2003, p. 231). Farid then scolds Amir for thinking he knows anything about Afghanistan. Farid later points to a man dressed in tattered clothing and says “that is the real Afghanistan” (Hosseini, 2003, p. 232). “You’ve always been a tourist here you just didn’t know it” (Hosseini, 2003, p. 232). Later Amir stays the night and has dinner at Wahid’s, Farids brother’s house. The family offers him food but Amir does not realize that he is eating the only food in the house. He later discovers what he did and left them cash to make up for eating their food. On the other hand, Hassan and Ali represented poverty within Islamic society. Wells Fargo is ranked fourth in assets and first in market value among their U.S competitors. The company’s vision is to satisfy all their customer’s financial needs and help them succeed financially (www.wellsfargo.com, 2012).” Strategic choices concern the “decisions about an organization’s future and the way in which it needs to respond to pressures and influences” (Farid, and Flynn, 2000). Strategic choice is a part of the strategic planning process that involves identifying and evaluating alternatives that leads to future opportunities. A good strategic choice has to be challenging enough to keep ahead of competitors but also achievable for the company (Farid, and Flynn, 2000). In this paper I will identify and evaluate my target firm Wells Fargo best strategic choices and alternatives the firm must consider to realize growth and opportunity. Value discipline Value discipline is an alternative approach to generic strategy. This alternative focus on delivering superior customer value through three components: operational excellence, customer intimacy, or product leadership. Companies that focus in one of these disciplines, although simultaneously meeting industry standards in the other two, gain a sustainable lead in the other two markets (pg....

...I want you to go to Kabul, I want you to bring Sohrab here,” (Hosseini 220). Although Amir was hesitant at first, he agreed to obey his request since his friendship with Rahim was too strong to deny. Rahim Khan and Amir have had a close relationship for a majority of Amir’s life. As a result, they have a large amount of trust in each other. Rahim trusts Amir to bring back Hassan’s only child, and Amir trusts Rahim that “there is a way to be good again” (Hosseini 2). Amir had also developed a friendship with Farid, his driver to Kabul. The two men had a rough start, but when Farid discovered Amir’s reason for traveling to Kabul, they became friends. The two men defended each other from enemies such as the Taliban, and protecting each other and Sohrab. At the end of Amir’s long journey, he gave Farid a present of two thousand dollars. He said, “I didn’t know how to thank you… You’ve done so much for me” (Hosseini 312). This wealthy present represents Amir’s trust in Farid, and how grateful he is for all that he’s done. Lastly, Amir’s most significant relationship is his friendship with Hassan. Amir’s entire childhood was spent with his...

...Individual Work Week 2 Charlotte Lewis SBM 2000-1001 Small Business Management Professor: Jean Goodall Everest College April 28, 2012 Edible Arrangements The thing that attracted me to Edible Arrangements is its great appeal to most people. The original store was located in East Haven, CT it opened in 1999, by Tariq Farid who partnered with his brother Kamran Farid (Wikipedia, 2012). After being successful in this original store they set about designing computer systems, training manuals, production and profitability tracking and supply chain management procedures they then entered the business of franchising in 2001 (ediblearragements.com, 2012). I feel that one of the reasons for their success is that they offer an alternative to the floral industries flower arrangements with the bonus that the receiver has a gift they can share with others and it’s healthy for the receiver also. This is definitely a niche industry and being the first and leader in the fresh fruit bouquet category has had it perks. In an interview on Bloomberg.com CEO Tariq Farid tells how he and his brother opened a small flower shop and had some loyal customers, and wanting to give their customers that little something extra they added edible arrangements in 1999 to a small section of their store, never even considering that it would take off as it did to become a company with over 458 million in annual sales (Bloomberg.com. 2012). In the same video Tariq explains that people our very health conscience...

The definition of a stakeholder is a person, group, organization, or system that affects or can be affected by an organization's actions. The main stakeholders of a company are the employees, suppliers, investors, and customers. The Executives major goal is to create the most value for all stakeholders. This is a difficult goal. Executives know that long term value is what is best for their stakeholders especially with the economy the way it is today. However, corporate leaders are under great pressure to produce short-term results rather than focus their efforts on long-term strategies and value creation (Dr. Farid A. Muna, 2010). Companies are beginning to focus on long term goals more and are implementing innovation, design and creativity to accomplish this. Executives have definitely come to the conclusion that innovation has to be connected to the financial...

...Summary Amir, a well-to-do Pashtun boy, and Hassan, a Hazara and the son of Amir's father's servant, Ali, spend their days in a peaceful Kabul, kite fighting, roaming the streets and being boys. Amir’s father (who is generally referred to as Baba, "daddy", throughout the book) loves both the boys, but seems critical of Amir for not being manly enough. Amir also fears his father blames him for his mother’s death during childbirth. However, he has a kind father figure in the form of Rahim Khan, Baba’s friend, who understands Amir better, and is supportive of his interest in writing stories. Assef, a notoriously mean and violent older boy with sadistic tendencies, blames Amir for socializing with a Hazara, according to Assef an inferior race that should only live in Hazarajat. He prepares to attack Amir with his steel knuckles, but Hassan bravely stands up to him, threatening to shoot Assef in the eye with his slingshot. Assef and his henchmen back off, but Assef says he will take revenge. Hassan is a successful "kite runner" for Amir, knowing where the kite will land without even watching it. One triumphant day, Amir wins the local tournament, and finally Baba's praise. Hassan goes to run the last cut kite, a great trophy, for Amir saying "For you, a thousand times over." Unfortunately, Hassan runs into Assef and his two henchmen. Hassan refuses to give up Amir's kite, so Assef exacts his revenge, assaulting and raping him. Wondering why Hassan is taking so long, Amir searches...
