The Gust Story

...Isn’t it nice to be with people who are kind, both towards you and others? What if we could all be kind to each other, wouldn’t it be nice? This is what George Saunders is trying to say with the speech he held at the Syracuse University. Saunders believes that as we get older we also get more kind, because we “come to see how useless it is to be selfish – how illogical, really.” As we get older we discover that after all, we are not the heart of the universe, there are other people on this planet and it would be wrong to just keep thinking about ourselves. We discover that our lives are now dominated by people who need us to be kind, because given that we are not, we probably won’t stay in touch with a lot of people. That would be a shame. So what we need to do is to understand, as soon as possible, that we should “[…] be less selfish, more aware of what’s actually happening in the present moment, more open, and more loving.” Saunders is afraid that most of the new generation will spend their whole lives trying to succeed, as he states here; ““succeeding” whatever that might mean to you, is hard, and the need to do so constantly renews itself (success is like a mountain that keeps growing as you hike it), and there’s the very real danger that “succeeding” will take up your whole life, […]”. To achieve success by yourself, you have to be selfish. But according to Saunders our lives are just one long gradual process of becoming kinder, we might as well speed it up. Why would anyone...

Fart In Public Places

...The meme I chose illustrates society’s detest for people who fart in public places. I chose this picture because I found it hilarious, and very true. Even though everyone farts, it is not deemed as acceptable behavior. But, it is only when someone decides to let one loose in public that flatulence becomes a deviant behavior. This type of deviance is categorized as a folkway. Farting is considered a folkway because, other than being seen as having bad etiquette; the person is unlikely to encounter any serious repercussions from their gas (Adler & Adler, 2016). Using Adler and Adler’s (2016) ABC’s of deviance, I can describe why farting in public is considered deviant behavior. In this case, the behavior is the fart itself, but the condition...

The Friar Analysis

...Chaucer thinks that medieval society is just a bunch of religious liars there only to receive wealth no matter the cost and those in role of power will not only astray from their real job but to use if for personal gain. 5. Right up by the hub. And then this churl, his belly stiff and taut As any tabor, hither shall be brought And set upon this wheel right off a cart, Up on the hub, then have him let a fart(Chaucer lines 2266-2269) So twelve of them shall kneel, As it shall be agreed, right by the wheel, For every friar a spoke,(Chaucer, lines 2261-2263) grope around his orifice, right in The friar's hand the fellow let a fart. No single horse that's ever drawn a cart 2150 Has ever let a fart with such a sound. (Chaucer, lines 2148-2151) In these lines Chaucer is mocking the friar and how he tried to device Thomas. it’s ironic how the friar was trying to trick Thomas into giving him money using the name of the church just to be trick by Thomas and actually receives just a fart and then the church also does the same when they get 12 friars and have Thomas fart on them again to mock them by said it shall dissipate between the 12 friars ...

The Summoner's Tale: an Indepth Analysis

...Summoner’s Tale narrated by Nihal Motive: Humiliation/Karma Much like Simkin from the Reeve’s tale, by the end of the tale, Friar John is utterly humiliated by both Thomas and the lord of the manor along with his squire. Basically, the Summoner describes Friar John with one word: “limiter” meaning a begging friar. He states that the friar “goes about Holderness in Yorkshire, preaching [and begging]” from his “regular sermon exhorting folk”. This is his daily routine until that day he meets Thomas. Upon being shamed by Thomas who gives the friar his gaseous treasure, Friar John who is furious at Thomas, complains to the lord of the manor and his squire hoping for some retribution. However, the squire further humiliates him by dividing another fart in twelve, each for 1 out of the 12 friars. Some argue that this humiliation...

Kaladet: A Short Story

...His voice drones on, but I cannot concentrate. My stomach rumbles every now and then, making my friends chuckles. My embarrassment has become an entertainment to my friends. Time drags by when one is in an embarrassing situation and when one is suppressing a fart. A storm is brewing in my stomach. I may explode any time. I ask permission to go to the toilet. If I am a primary student it will be very difficult because I may need to say whether I am doing number one or number two. This is neither of them. I just want to fart. I do not know what number is assigned for this, probably 0 or .5. Of cause the teacher does not ask as I am a high school student. I go to the toilet and fart there. I come back to the classroom and wait till the school finishes. When the school ends at 3:30 I go...

Capping Paper

...In this paper, I will discuss how social responsibility and ethics interacts with the business world. I will discuss different styles to management ethics, the benefits companies will find from acting ethical and socially responsibly and some examples of unethical behavior in the workplace. I will also look at social responsibly and its benefits, as well as give my opinion on both topics. Businesses have always been known to shoot for maximum profits in order to please both those inside and outside their company. However, the concept of business ethics and social responsibility has put principled boundaries on organizations so that they cannot achieve their profit goals in any way they please. In order for a company to function within today’s global business society, they must be able to take a strong stance ethically on how they are going to sell their products and conduct their everyday work activities. Alongside being ethical, companies must also take on social responsibility; showing their community that they are involved, alert and willing to be philanthropists even in tough times. Corporate ethics and social responsible, if overlooked, can be detrimental to an organizations outward appearance and customer base. It is not only the right thing to do, but it has always been seen as good business. Both business ethics and social responsibly, although different, play fundamental roles in an organization’s successes. Ethics can be defined as the study of standards...

Why Going Vegan Is Good For The Environment

...These farts (and probably our own) produce methane gas which is released into our earth's atmosphere where it absorbs heat, the same way as carbon dioxide does. The only difference is that methane gas is not a direct cause of environmental effects, but a global warming contributing factor. Once the heat absorption begins to increase the earth's temperature, many things begin to occur: the temperature of the ocean begins to rise; melting of the glaciers begins; the permafrost begins to melt; flooding increases; severe intensity of weather patterns and more. 5. Going vegan decreases water pollution Unfortunately, the production of livestock accounts for increases in water usage for the irrigation of crops to feed cattle and other forms of livestock....
